Arranging for Solo Guitar: The Queen Titles ReviewIf you've found this page, likely you already know something about the amazing Edgar Cruz - one of the most talented guitarists on the planet! Not only does Edgar tackle four very complex and difficult songs, but he also shows you, step by step, how to play them yourself - if you're good enough to do it. (I hope I am). I was fortunate enough to attend one of Cruz's concerts here in AZ last year. Introducing Bohemian Rhapsody, he said, "I'm going to play the bass line, the lead guitar, rythym guitar, the piano, vocals, and back-up vocals - all on the guitar -live" Impossible? Not for Cruz. It's amazing!Got to meet Cruz after the show too. Nice guy. I was hesitant to spend 4o bucks on a single DVD, but just had to do it. No regrets now. What would it cost to take lessons from one of the best in the world? A lot more than 40 bucks. What would you pay to learn how to do 4 of the most difficult magic tricks from a renowned magician? Well, Cruz is a magician on the guitar. I'm voting 10 starsArranging for Solo Guitar: The Queen Titles OverviewThis award-winning DVD showcases Edgar Cruz's notorious solo guitar arrangement of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody. Also includes solo fingerstyle renditions of We Are The Champions, Killer Queen and Crazy Little Thing Called Love which are performed and then taught in great detail. Edgar demonstrates the process he uses to distill the essence of these rock classics with all of their familiar harmonies and orchestrations onto a single guitar. He covers all the techniques necessary to execute the difficult passages, and simplified variations are presented to make the arrangements accessible to students of many levels. Beyond the Queen titles, Edgar's unique approach and insight can be applied to literally any song you choose. Multi-angle DVD features streaming musical notation and tab on the alternate video track. Notation and tab is also printable from the disc. All arrangements in standard tuning. "...Edgar Cruz is a wizard. How else can one explain how he captures the sounds of an entire band and reduces them to a single guitar? It's that special gift, skill, magic – whatever you'd like to call it – that has produced such amazing solo guitar performances as Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody. If Cruz caught the attention of the guitar playing and listening world with that masterpiece, then that world had better brace itself..." – John Schroeter, Publisher, Fingerstyle Guitar Magazine Winner of two Accolade Awards (best instructional/educational and best editing) as well as a nomination for the 2005 DVD Awards.

John Petrucci - Rock Discipline (2002) ReviewI've always been a fan of John Petrucci's playing in Dream Theater and Liquid Tension Experiment, and when I purchased his Wild Stringdom book, I thought the DVD wouldn't have much new information. That didn't stop me from getting it, and it turned out that I was wrong.
In fact, if you've read Wild Stringdom, this is the perfect supplement. There isn't much information overlap - most of the exercises are completely different and new. There's also new information that wasn't covered in the book.
Mr. Petrucci begins by showing some non-guitar warm-up exercises, and then proceeds to left-hand stretches on guitar. He also shows warm-ups for the picking hand, and then integrates the two. The warm-up section is very thorough, more so than that of most comparable videos that show only a lick or two for fast alternate picking.
The other sections deal with traditional technical issues such as subdivisions of time (very useful), working with the metronome to increase speed, and sweep picking. Petrucci also thoroughly covers the subject of inside picking, and how to get comfortable with it. Afterwards, he goes in-depth on lead construction by showing how to put together scale fragments - this also encompasses left-hand legato playing. Finally, there's a section on chords, in which common "progressive" chords are covered.
The examples of the techniques explained range from easy to hard for each section. They grow in difficulty bit by bit, not everything all at once. Also, Petrucci covers the considerations in coming up with your own etudes.
In-between each section, Petrucci talks about how he approaches composition, playing in the band, early experiences, and stuff like that. This insight is interesting - it makes him seem more human if nothing else.
Additionally, Petrucci goes over his pre-Ernie Ball setup. In the DVD section, he also talks about his new Ernie Ball guitar, as well as gives a backstage tour before a DT show. There's also a bloopers reel, where John is shows messing up several takes of various parts - such as the introduction. There is also G3 footage of John's band from the 2001 tour with Satch and Vai - these fragments are short, but the video is decent quality.
This has the bang for the buck - two hours of instruction, plus the extras. The explanations are clear, and the booklet is very detailed - there are no typographical errors or anything like that. If you're an intermediate player looking to spend $50 on an instructional video by a celebrity guitarist, this is probably your best bet.John Petrucci - Rock Discipline (2002) Overview

Songxpress: Classic Surf Guitar 1 (1999) ReviewI can't believe this things has gotten ANY good reviews.
Okay, it's a decently made video, alright presentation, easy to pick up on the licks, the on-screen tablature is great...
BUT I never got past Misirlou (the first song on the tape) because... it's not Misirlou. The video instructs you to play the song in the wrong SCALE. If you listen to a Dick Dale recording of this song and then watch the tape, you will laugh yourself off your stool.
It's wrong. You can find a tab transcription book with this song and see for yourself that it's wrong.
[opening lick actual notes: bottom string 0,1,4,5,7,8,11,8,7 and on the video: 0,3,4,5,7,10,11,8]
Waste of ten bucks.Songxpress: Classic Surf Guitar 1 (1999) Overview

Easy Steps to Flamenco Guitar ReviewAaron's DVD and tab/standard notation DVD booklet is great for the beginning guitarist who is interested in flamenco. He uses simple chord fingering so there's no need for dreadful barre chords* that usually give beginner's trouble. I'll list a breakdown of the DVD:
1. Intro to flamenco. Short history on flamenco terms and what they mean. Less than 3 minutes of your time.
2. Intro to different right hand flamenco movements. Rasguedo, picado, and compas. He goes slowly demonstrating each technique. He also gives practice exercises, tips, and close ups of the movements. The entire DVD expands on the use of the techniques. He doesn't rush the student to play in time and encourages the student to play at a speed that is comfortable until he/she masters the basic technique until he/she can play in time without stumbling for the next chord or rhythm.
3. Playing different rhythms, chords, and flamenco right hand movements with a few extra tricks of playing chords with subtle note changes on the left hand.
If you know how to play the basic chords and smoothly change chords at a reasonable tempo, this DVD is great for you! You will not be disappointed.
* The only barre chord ("F" chord) used is later in the DVD when you should be able to play a barre easily.

The Real Merle Travis Guitar - Like Father, Like Son ReviewI bought this DVD mainly to learn to play Merle Travis' arrangement of "I'll See You In My Dreams". Who better to learn from then Merle's own son, right? At first, Thom Bresh's charming but informal style of teaching was a bit hard to follow. He seemed to skip through things and it was sometimes hard to tell exactly what he was doing. As my own skills picked up, though, I realized Thom's approach was very much in keeping with the Travis style of picking - forceful, swinging and loose. If you're a beginner, like I was, you might want to start with Marcel Dadi's excellent and very precise DVDs (Nashville Picking vols 1 & 2) and then move on to Thom. Either way, you're bound to return to both again and again, and learn a great deal in the process. The Real Merle Travis Guitar - Like Father, Like Son OverviewREAL MERLE TRAVIS GUITAR - DVD Movie

Behind the Player (2010) ReviewThis is a pretty fun DVD. Big fans may find more to love than myself, being a casual fan of Ace and KISS. It isn't that expensive and for the money you get a nearly half hour sort of biography piece that is fun and interesting with a bit of history and a bit of good tech talk about guitars and amps etc. Ace also teaches a couple of tunes Cold Gin and Shock Me. The bonus performances and solos and promo for his latest album are nice extras but hardly revelatory. Its well produced for the most part and there are other musicians on the project to add their 2 cents like Matt Sorum and George Lynch that don't add that much in my opinion. Ace really looks shot to heck and ready to join ANVIL but he seems in good spirits and comes across and a sort of cool dude.

Flamenco Guitar Method by Graf-Martinez, Vol 1 ReviewRight Mr. darryl summers - but let's mention that a Score 'n Tab Viewer for the DVDs (if you own) is available on Graf-Martinez' site for free download.
Each DVD is divided into sections. In the first one covers the `rasgueado' and many of its variations. The second one covers the `pulgar' and variations on it. In the third talks about the golpe. I have found all of these covered on the internet beforehand but not in such length and not with such clear pictures. The second DVD is concerned with arpeggios, compas (time), and examples of songs.
The Graf-Martinez Flamenco Guitar Method must rank as one of the best self-tuition resources on the market and whether you are student or teacher of flamenco guitar, his new DVDs are an excellent companion to this. Recommended.
I will give 5 stars and congratulate Mr. Graf-Martinez for achieving such a marvelous instructional series.Flamenco Guitar Method by Graf-Martinez, Vol 1 Overview

Nate LaPointe: Learn to Play the Songs of Bob Dylan ReviewThis DVD has a good selection of Dylan's different guitar styles, and the instructor does a good job of breaking them down and walking you through them step by step. My only complaint is that he goes a little too fast sometimes, and there is no guitar tab displayed on the screen, which a lot of other guitar instruction DVDs have.Nate LaPointe: Learn to Play the Songs of Bob Dylan Overview

House of Blues Beginner, Acoustic Guitar ReviewThe greatest thing about this dvd is that the teacher, teaches you how to play modern styles. I haven't checked out many beginner acoustic dvds, but i have looked threw many beginner guitar books. I think these modern ideas are much better than playing "Mary Had A Little Lamb" and "Old Mc Donald". With added booklet and online refrences you can advance more. Although you may want to get a few others books a dvd is important too I think. Guitar Signature Licks: Lynyrd Skynyrd ReviewGreg Koch at this long-haired inimitable best! This is the third in the artist series from Hal Leonard with Koch at the helm showing the licks, and tricks if you will, of the southern-fried rock juggernaut. His style and virtuosity remain unchanged from the previous two installments that highlighted the style of Stevie Ray Vaughan. Funny, and sometimes frightening, Koch hits on every nuance required to replicate the King/Collins/Rossington/Gates power-quad. I loved this DVD, and the others mentioned. I missed a chance to see Greg in San Jose in 2005 and I've regretted it ever since. Great teacher and fun to watch. Get it now!!!Guitar Signature Licks: Lynyrd Skynyrd Overview

Learn to Play the Songs of John Denver DVD#2 ReviewThis has several of my favorite John Denver songs. Aspen Glow, Christmas for Cowboys, This Old Guitar, I Guess He'd Rather Be in Colorado, Mother Nature's Son, Rhymes and Reasons, and Take Me Home, Country Roads. Pete generally gives some interesting background on the songs and walks you through the chords and strums or picking patterns. Split screen shots show you right and left hand techniques. You may appreciate his singing, not because he sings well but because he does not sing all that well. If he is brave enough to sing, then you should be inspired to sing as well. ;)Learn to Play the Songs of John Denver DVD#2 Overview

Grateful Dead: A Step-by-step Breakdown of Grateful Dead's Guitar Styles and Techniques (2004) ReviewNot sure how the other reviewers were mislead but this was very clearly a guitar tutorial DVD taught by a great teacher. In just one day, i was playing Uncle John's Band and Casey Jones exactly how the Dead play them. Both Jerry and Bob guitar parts are broken down and clearly explained in both close-ups on the fretboard as well as a picture-in-picture of the right hand strumming. i wish all video tutorials were this good.Grateful Dead: A Step-by-step Breakdown of Grateful Dead's Guitar Styles and Techniques (2004) Overview
