Pepe Romero: Recuerdos de la Alhambra / Jeux Interdits / Asturias ReviewThis is a wonderful collection of Spanish guitar standards, nicely programmed and performed - Romero's playing is nothing short of virtuosic. Comparing Pepe Romero's version of "Recuerdos de la Alhambra" on this album to John Williams Greatest Hits (1974) version, it is clear that Romero is a true virtuoso of the guitar. That is not a put down on Williams, who is one of the most gifted players around. Rather it is a testament to the talent of Romero. In Williams' rendition of the aforementioned Tarrega standard, you can hear him putting his all into the performance - at times he borders on over-playing. Romero, on the other hand, seems totally at ease with the piece. You get the sense that for Romero, the guitar is a tool he has total mastery of. Gypsy Flame ReviewLet me preface my comments with this background: I have shamefully purchased over 800 CD's in the last ten years, money that possibly could have been far better spent in most cases. Most of my collection is rock music, hard rock in particular. I also have a small classical section, and another section with "Ethnic/Exotic" music. Armik fits into this last category. My five Armik CD's would definitely be in my "Top Ten" list. That's right: Armik would compose half of my ten favorite CD's out of a universe of approximately 800. That's how good this music is.
I suggest that you buy Gypsy Flame first. Keep your computer booted up until the mail comes. If you like Gypsy Flame--and I can't fathom otherwise--you will be pleased to know that Armik's other four CD's are all equally incredible. This is happy music, music that celebrates the best of life. Another reviewer of one of Armik's CD's made a comparison to Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass, and I agree that that is a good basis for comparison because Herb Alpert and the TJ Brass also really has that classic upbeat ambience that immediately spices up any occasion. I listen to Armik when I commute into work in the morning, and it really puts me into a postive state of mind for the balance of the day. I roll into the office with the blood pressure of a guy who's been drinking wine and eating crab while gazing listfully over the Mediterranean. This music is instant vacation.
Let me emphasize: In the five Armik CD's there is not a single weak song, and each CD is a must-have. Furthermore, you will want to start giving these things as gifts. I have been proselytizing this music left and right and people are so receptive to this sound and Armik's virtuosity that it is amazing that he is not one of the most famous musicians in the world. Incendio ReviewIncendio's new self titled album has a diversity of new sounds but it still has the same passion and fire that all the other CD's have. I ordered it online but the next day I ended up in Borders and couldn't wait so I made my friend buy it for me (of course I paid her back). Anyway I have been listening to it ever since.
The styles are Beautifully woven together and create a magical sound. I really like track #5 "Awakening" because Liza adds some vocals to the mix. The vocals are not very complex but the subtlety of it gives the song depth and creates a whole new sound.
I still don't have a favorite album but for right now this new CD is at the top of my list. I can't wait to hear these new songs live. This CD is worth more than 5 stars in my book (I give it 10)Incendio Overview

All My Love ReviewThis music is some of the most tender and hauntingly beautiful I have ever heard. Only recently was I introduced to this treasure on the Home Shopping Network. I had fallen asleep on the couch, and awoke to the sounds of Esteban. I found myself absolutely taken away by the music. My wife gave me this cd and a live Esteban video for my birthday, and I am a fan for life!
As a guitartist I am in awe of his incredible skill, but more so by the spirit and feeling with which he plays. Esteban's blend of flamenco, classical, jazz and other elements absolutely captivates. The music actually has a deeply spiritual feel.

The Art of Pepe Romero: Guitar Favorites ReviewListening to this album gives me the feeling of being three years old and starting to fall asleep after dinner and my father picking me up and carrying me to bed. I cannot describe how his music envelopes me-- I do not know why but every time I hear it I start to tear up. On this CD he is backed by an orchestra and hearing him play and them back him so perfectly is a delight to the ears. I play this CD for everything-- but I like it when I am lying down after a workout with candles lit and I can just close my eyes and melt into the music. I am not a music person-- I know very little and only know what I like but cannot explain it, but this CD is very, very wonderful. Angel Romero and his son, Lito (heard on tracks five through seven), represent the second and third generations of a family of guitar virtuosi.
A number of the selections are more commonly heard performed by piano; however, in the hands of a guitarist of the calibre of Angel Romero, what can be done on the piano can be done with at least equal efficacy on the guitar. The only non-Western piece is the variations on Sakura, which should be particularly pleasant listening experience for those not previously familiar with it.

Easy Steps to Flamenco Guitar ReviewAaron's DVD and tab/standard notation DVD booklet is great for the beginning guitarist who is interested in flamenco. He uses simple chord fingering so there's no need for dreadful barre chords* that usually give beginner's trouble. I'll list a breakdown of the DVD:
1. Intro to flamenco. Short history on flamenco terms and what they mean. Less than 3 minutes of your time.
2. Intro to different right hand flamenco movements. Rasguedo, picado, and compas. He goes slowly demonstrating each technique. He also gives practice exercises, tips, and close ups of the movements. The entire DVD expands on the use of the techniques. He doesn't rush the student to play in time and encourages the student to play at a speed that is comfortable until he/she masters the basic technique until he/she can play in time without stumbling for the next chord or rhythm.
3. Playing different rhythms, chords, and flamenco right hand movements with a few extra tricks of playing chords with subtle note changes on the left hand.
If you know how to play the basic chords and smoothly change chords at a reasonable tempo, this DVD is great for you! You will not be disappointed.
* The only barre chord ("F" chord) used is later in the DVD when you should be able to play a barre easily.

Malagueña: Spanish Guitar Music ReviewI can't help but think that because it's five dollars some people have to get snobby about this collection. In my humble opinion the recordings of "Malaguena," "Capricho Arabe," "En Los Trigales," and "Introduction, Theme, & Variations on a Theme From Mozart" are the standard by which all others should be judged. And nobody else can touch his interpretation of Granados' "Villanesca." Except perhaps for Manuel Barrueco, but the way Narciso uses harmonics for the pedal tone is something that feels so natural, you can't listen to a fretted version ever again w/o wishing it was done in harmonics! The rest of the album is typical Narciso. Amazing dynamics and phrasing with flawless technical execution. I don't really believe that anyone else in the history of classical guitar has been able to carry a counterpoint with such defined independence. A true 20th century master. His tone may be a bit on the treble side for "Recuerdos de la Alhambra" but why even play that after Pepe put his mark on it? ;)
This collection is nearly identical to a cassette tape I used to own 20 some odd years ago except that "Rumores de la Caleta" and perhaps one or two others are not included with this compilation.Malagueña: Spanish Guitar Music Overview

Spanish Spa Guitar (Spanish, Classical & New Age Flamenco Guitar for Massage, Spas, Yoga & Relaxation) ReviewThis is a terrific album by Ruben Romero, but don't let the title fool you. While the sounds are relaxed enough for a spa, this is actually a great album to put on when company comes over for dinner or drinks. While many of the songs embrace Flamenco or a Southwest feel, tracks like Fuerza and Bossa D'Amor have a distinctly Brazilian vibe to them.
My favorite song on the album is "Leyenda", which could have easily found its way into the score of a Robert Rodriguez film. Overall, this is an excellent album from start to finish.
Amazon doesn't make mention of this, but unfortunately Ruben Romero passed away in New Mexico back in 2007. He studied under some of Spain's greatest guitarists, but the man had serious natural talent that went beyond what can be taught. Flamenco Guitar Method by Graf-Martinez, Vol 1 ReviewRight Mr. darryl summers - but let's mention that a Score 'n Tab Viewer for the DVDs (if you own) is available on Graf-Martinez' site for free download.
Each DVD is divided into sections. In the first one covers the `rasgueado' and many of its variations. The second one covers the `pulgar' and variations on it. In the third talks about the golpe. I have found all of these covered on the internet beforehand but not in such length and not with such clear pictures. The second DVD is concerned with arpeggios, compas (time), and examples of songs.
The Graf-Martinez Flamenco Guitar Method must rank as one of the best self-tuition resources on the market and whether you are student or teacher of flamenco guitar, his new DVDs are an excellent companion to this. Recommended.

He's more like Arlo Guthrie showing you some licks in the back room after a set at the Berkeley Cafe. In this DVD Sedlak assumes you have the basics of the guitar figured out and just want to sound like a flamenco guitarist. He doesn't dwell on the musical tradition behind flamenco, spend time teaching you all the forms, or hold forth on the nuances of technique.
He just shows you how to get the flamenco sound, while informally teaching you some cool sounding but easy to play pieces. And sometimes that's all you want. Formal flamenco studies are slow going. Sedlak gets you to the payoff quickly, so you can sound like you halfway could actually BE a flamenco player, with just a few weeks of consistent practice.
There is much, much more to flamenco than Sedlak presents in this video course. But you're more likely to stay motivated with this material, especially if you're a begninning flamenco player, than if you take the long road of the flamenco purist. He was not only an amazingly unique talent but an innovator as well. When he rediscovered the guitar it was a forgotten instrument that shared little respect from the musical community. Art of Segovia ReviewThis 2-CD set produced by Deutche Grammmophon and first released in 2002 is one set of the hundreds that could have been or the dozens that actually have been made and sold successfully all over the world. The exceptional feature of this particular collection is not, of course, the performer. Quite to the contrary, the miraculous consistency of stylings and performance are amongst the most remarkable aspects of the man who was, arguably, the 20th Centry's virtuoso supreme of the classical guitar, Andres Segovia (1893-1987.) Rather, it is the collection itself - the pieces chosen to be produced on this one set - this, to steal a German word, gestalt. While his style did not remain constant throughout his long life and career, by the time he had developed his most masterful skills that included doing his own arrangements - the era represented on this particular set (1951-1960) - his playing had become completely his own - unchallenged and unmatched by even other clearly great guitarists with whom he shared this era.
There are a total of 31 pieces played on these CDs and while a playlist would be an unnecessary use of space here, a list of the composers represented is not. More than the specific pieces Segovia gives us here, the range of composers chosen by the compilers and editors - with each piece rearranged by Segovia himself, tells us a great deal about his interests, talents and musical range. These composers include:
Isaac Albeniz, Johann Sebastian Bach, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Frederic Chopin, Claude Debussy, John Dowland, Manuel de Falla, Cesar Franke, Girolamo Frescobaldi, Edvard Grieg, George Frederic Handel, Felix Mendelsohn, Frederico Moreno Torroba, Modest Mussorgsky, Nicolo Paganini, Felipe Pedrell, Manuel Ponce, Jean-Philippe Rameau, Joaquin Rodrigo, Albert Roussel, Domenico Scarlatti, Alexander Scriabin, Segovia's own composition of Estudio sin luz, Fernando Sor, Francisco Tarrega, Joaquin Turina and Heitor Villa-Lobos. A truly magnificent and broad ranging collection held together by Segovia's unique personal style, approach and sound.
Largely self-taught, Andres Segovia did things with a guitar that others only imagined. He didn't just play Bach, for example - music written for an entirely different type of instrument (keyboards.) He went a step further, and recorder Bach's keyboard lessons written for his students (the Two and Three Part Inventions) and made them sound as if they had been written for the guitar! His artistry is evident to even the casual listener and in this collection, any devote of classical guitar and/or of Segovia as an individual artist, will not be disappointed.
Perfect listening for anytime. Hypnotic and, simply, unsurpassed. A necessary addition to any serious classical guitar collection.
