Aerial Boundaries ReviewAnyone interested in discovering the massive changes in contemporary acoustic guitar playing perpetrated by just one man, this is the mandatory first step. Aerial Boundaries is, without doubt, the record that presented Michael Hedges to the world as the ultimate acoustic guitar visionary, stretching the limits of the instrument to accomodate his uncanny musical ideas. I was fortunate enough to meet him on various occasions, and to study with John Stropes, responsible for his transcription work. On such occasions, Hedges told me that, despite the fact that he felt the necessity of evolving his music, this was his most accurate attempt to revolutionize the way the acoustic guitar should sound. Without question, his best and most essential recording.Aerial Boundaries OverviewNo Description AvailableNo Track Information AvailableMedia Type: CDArtist: HEDGES,MICHAELTitle: AERIAL BOUNDARIESStreet Release Date: 07/07/1987

Beyond Boundaries: Guitar Solos ReviewSome thought of Michael the way people thought of Frank Zappa: they wished he'd shut up and play his guitar. I liked to hear Michael sing. For one thing, it gave the guitar-intense side of my brain a few minutes to rest after the intense stimulation it had just received. But I understand the desire for an all-instrumental Hedges album and I give this one a passing grade.
Mind you, if I were compiling favorite Michael Hedges instrumentals, my list would be markedly different than this set list. I consider his first two discs to be his best instrumental work and although three cuts form the first disc (Breakfast In The Field) are included, his tour de force showpiece, "Silent Anticipations", is not. And although five cuts from the second disc (Aerial Boundaries) are included, "Hot Type" is not. I consider these to be glaring omissions and since so much was included from later albums, it would have been easy to make way for them. I guess that after this disc sets the hook in you, you'll be forced to go back and buy all the first two.
Alas, the above is picking nits. Notice that I gave 5 stars for this disc. For those unitiated to Michael Hedges, I have this advice: listen to this CD when you have time to sit and do nothing but listen. Also, crank it up to at least 85 dB. 95dB on the peaks is more like his live shows. He may have been categorized as a New Age artist, but like Leo Kottke, this stereotype was grossly inadequate. Michael was a rocker at heart, but as others have mentioned, he really was not from this planet. At a live show, he once told the audience that he was looking for a label for his music because New Age didn't hack it. I spoke out that he should call his music "Heavy Mental" and he liked it and used it for years. And that's exactly what Michael's music was: Boundless, Incredible, Fantastic, Creative, Very Heavy and Very Mental. He was like a brother to me and I sorely miss him.Beyond Boundaries: Guitar Solos Overview

All My Love ReviewThis music is some of the most tender and hauntingly beautiful I have ever heard. Only recently was I introduced to this treasure on the Home Shopping Network. I had fallen asleep on the couch, and awoke to the sounds of Esteban. I found myself absolutely taken away by the music. My wife gave me this cd and a live Esteban video for my birthday, and I am a fan for life!
As a guitartist I am in awe of his incredible skill, but more so by the spirit and feeling with which he plays. Esteban's blend of flamenco, classical, jazz and other elements absolutely captivates. The music actually has a deeply spiritual feel.
Esteban takes time-honored classics and crafts them with his fingernails against nylon strings like you've never heard them before. Try "Never My Love", "Fernando", "Don't Cry For Me Argentina"...or my personal favorite..."Unchained Melody"
Listen to it with someone you love, or while thinking about someone you love. All My Love Overviewupdated classic songs with a flamenco flair

Gently Weeps ReviewOK, there are 2 words I never, ever though I would use together. Virtuoso and ukulele. That is, until I heard "Gently Weeps". This disc is simply amazing. I heard Scott Simon on NPR's Weekend Edition talking to Jake, and what I heard intrigued me enough to gamble and spend the $$ for this disc. I figured, what I heard was good, and if the uke was a good enough instrument for George Harrison then it was going to be OK. Man, was I surprised at what was coming through my speakers. This man is one of the most incredible musicians I have ever heard. The songs he covers, especially his versions of "While my Guitar Gently Weeps","Misty", "Spain" and "Ave Maria" are some of the best versions anywhere anytime. Half of the disc is original compositions, which are absolutely beautiful. Of special interest are the bonus songs, here Jake plays with other musicians and is able to concentrate on creating fluid lead lines instead of creating both rhythm and lead as he does when he plays solo ukulele.
This disc is beautiful and powerful. There are traces of flamenco styling as well jazz, country, well...you name it. This disc is a wonderful surprise and I recommend it highly. "Ukulele Virtuoso" indeed.Gently Weeps OverviewJake Shimabukuro is one of the most exciting up-and-coming musicians today. Already compares to greats like Hendrix and Clapton for his ability and innovation, word of Jake's breathtaking talent spread worldwide when a video clip of him playing George Harrison'sWhile My Guitar Gently Weepsbegan circulating the internet last year.Word about the Hawaiian-born ukulele virtuoso is still spreading. Sold-out crowds and standing ovations were a nightly occurrence on his second US tour.Capturing the energy of his live show, Gently Weeps features solo performance repertoire that's causing fans from Los Angeles to New York and New Orleans to Chicago to hail Jake as the next musical legend.

Bach and Noodles ReviewThe problem I've had with a number of Harvey Pittel's recordings is that they include so many genres that they come off a little unfocused. For example, this disc contains one of the most musical versions of Milhaud's Scaramouche I ever heard. I mean, the guy really is a giant of the classical saxophone and IMO a better musician than some of the other folks who dominate the academic circles. But did the world really need an amalgamation of Bach and Johnny Mercer? The New Classics Suite strikes me as something that a much lesser player could have thrown together. Pittel should trust the public who is buying these European all-classical saxophone albums and concentrate on what he can really offer to the classical music world.Bach and Noodles Overview
