Brushfire Fairytales ReviewBeing a person whose favourite genres of music are Soul and Avant-garde Jazz, sometimes a break is needed from the ever-amazing art created by soul artists and the mad cacaphony of white noise created by avant-gardists. Increasingly, I am a fan of the acoustic guitar in it simplicity, especially if it is one of only a few instruments. Singer/Songwriter James Taylor springs to mind as an artist who I really enjoy listening to. He can make you calm after a storm just by playing his guitar and singing a song with his soothing voice.
An artist who I discovered while talking to some surfer friends was Jack Johnson. I decided to give him a go, and I found his album to be just the thing I was looking for. With his trio of guitar, bass and drums, this is a real acoustic album through and through. Brushfire Fairytales is like a cross between James Taylor's mellow singer/songwriter work and the slightly more upbeat work of Ben Harper (only slightly). Even Jack's singing style is like a fusion of the two.
The album is simply amazing based simply on its merits; simplicity. It is an feat in minimalism that this album can hold your attention without the commercial smoke and mirrors of more poppish acoustic rock. Also, Jack is an artist who has something to say in his sometimes cryptic lyrics. He only brings in a little help on Flake, using Ben Harper and Tommy Jordan. Inaudible Melodies, Posters, Sexy Plexi, Flake, Bubble Toes and The News are my favourites.
Some criticise this album for its lack of variation. Sure; he seems to stay in a fairly steady pace and sound, but I have heard jazz albums with less variation that are celebrated masterpieces (Kind of Blue for all it brilliance is pretty much easy going all the way through; John Coltrane's Ascension is madness all the way through [it is one song though]). The point is that he makes good music, writes his own songs, plays guitar and is appealing enough to make it to the Billboard Top 100 albums chart. In other words he is the best of both worlds; a popular artist who is actually talented.
I hope that he has considerable fame and success based on his talent and that he will continue to make excellent music like this for years to come.Brushfire Fairytales OverviewFans of Willy Porter, Ben Harper, and G. Love will all want to check out Jack Johnson's engaging folk- and blues-inflected pop. Born in Oahu, Hawaii, Johnson, a former surfer and film-school graduate, has a knack for acoustic ballads whose calm surfaces hide a subtle but strong lyrical undertow. "It seems to me that 'maybe' pretty much always means 'no,'" sings Johnson on "Flake," which features crony Harper on slide guitar. Production by J.P. Plunier (who also handles Harper's recordings) is simple and uncluttered: acoustic guitar and drum tracks share the foreground with Johnson's easygoing vocals, which evoke everyone from G. Love (who recorded Johnson's "Rodeo Clowns" on his Philadelphonic album) to Nick Drake to Willy Porter. And while Johnson may not have Porter's guitar chops, these songs have a relaxed beauty and understated depth that reward repeated listening. --Bill Forman

Don't Look Away ReviewDon't be fooled by her age, Kate Voegele is no spring chicken when it comes to the music industry. Signed by MySpace Records last year, Voegele began recording her first full length album, the resultant "Don't Look Away," a follow-up to two independently released EP's entitled "The Other Side" (2003) and "Louder Than Words" (2005). Voegele began making her mark opening shows for artists like Josh Kelley, The Wreckers, Stephen Kellogg, and a host of others over the past five years. Armed in most cases with nothing more than an acoustic guitar, Kate Voegele demanded attention on stage with her amazing voice and powerful lyrics. This debut album furthers her maturation process as an artist and shows that this songstress is ready to make a permanent mark in the industry that she loves.
For the ITunes fan, can't miss downloads are:
12. Wish You Were
"Cuz I've seen your act, and I know all the facts.
I'm still in love with who I wish you were.
It ain't hard to see, who you are underneath,
I'm still in love with who I wish you were."
11. I Won't Disagree (a song that Voegele received first prize in the 2005 USA Songwriting Competition for)
"Cause lately you make me weaker in the knees
And race through my veins baby every time you're close to me
Take me away to places I ain't seen
They say you've got a hold on me'
And I Won't Disagree"
Kate has also landed a recurring role on the WB's "One Tree Hill." Her character Mia has performed several of the songs on the show that you can find right here on this album. If you're a fan of the songs you've heard on the show, this album is a must have that you'll definitely enjoy from start to finish.
This is a strong debut effort from an extremely talented young lady. Kate Voegele will be a name to look out for in the music business for many years to come. Congrats Kate, You truly are on "Top of the World."Don't Look Away Overview

Comme si de rien n'était ReviewThe beautuful and bold, classy, wistful Italian/French chanteuse has released a new album of love songs, whose title translates "As If Nothing Had Happened", a paean to love and lust.
"Simply" will be the title of the new album for the international market.
Love, loss and relationships are recurring themes, with the odd intellectual interlude, which many of her fans will probably be far more interested in than hearing her recite poetry, however tunefully.
Musically she mines Beatles territory (gently mournful opener "Ma Jeunesse"), an ethereal Julie Cruise style ("La Possibilite D'une Ile"), there's a Bob Dylan cover ("You Belong To Me" sung in English), a bit of flamenco here, Latin rhythms there.
Eight of the album's 11 original songs - there is also a cover of Italian singer/sogwrite Francesco Guccini's "Il Vecchio e il Bambino" in Italian for The old man and the child), and a musical arrangement of a Michel Houellebecq poem - had, it seems, already been written and were well into pre-production before Carla had even been introduced to Nicolas Sarkozy. The album is about love, if not a specific love, and about the passage of time. Those themes, and Bruni's intimate, husky voice, by turns silk and gravel, playful and melancholic, are familiar from her first album, "Quelqu'un M'a Dit", a folksy, me-and-my-guitar production that she recorded pretty much in her kitchen and took almost everyone pleasantly by surprise, selling 1.2m copies in France and a further 800,000 around the world.
Bruni's voice is still there, certainly, but the musical landscape that accompanies it is very different from the sparse acoustic guitar arrangements that served it so well before.
"Comme Si Rien n' Etait" is a riot of horns, flutes, electric pianos, vibraphones, Fenders, even, on occasion, tubas. The songs themselves are, for the most part, simple and moving.
"And the noise of love's pain slowly recedes/ And the sound of the past is silenced," she sings in "L'Amoureuse", a celebration of love, completed, apparently, just after her meeting with Sarkozy.
"The streets are gardens/ I'm dancing on the pavements."
"Tu Es Ma Came" (You Are My Drug) speaks of a fiercer passion and sparked a minor diplomatic incident when Bogotá officials objected to a love described as "more deadly than Afghan heroin/ More dangerous than Colombian white".
"Salut Marin" (Hey Sailor), is a touching lament dedicated to Bruni's brother, Virginio, who died in 2006.
"Ta Tienne" (I'm Yours) coins a phrase new to the French language; the French would normally be, "Je suis à toi". But each verse - "I'm your yours, I'm your yours, no one really says that I know, but it's good anyway" - is supported by a different instrument in turn, one after the other, for no apparent reason.
Nostalgia is at the heart of "Le Temps Perdu", or Lost Time ("I'm offering you the time of cherries and roses, the time of silky caresses/ Make time for the gentle things"), but a song that might have worked magically with the solo guitar of Bruni's earlier albums is tainted by a deliberately nostalgic swing background oozing with clarinets and vibraphones. "Je Suis une Enfant" (I Am a Child) takes a simple Schumann lullaby and, for some reason, converts it into a 60s slow rock number.
On this one she sings that "despite her 40 years and 30 lovers", she still sees herself as a child. "I turn my back on time," she croons... "hair and skirt in the wind".
The French newspaper Le Figaro's critic thought this was the album's best track and praised Carla's "dense and fragile voice".
On "Il Vecchio e il Bambino", a murky and moving cover of a song by Italian Francesco Guccini, she describes an old man telling a child of the grass fields that have now been replaced by smoking factories.
Dominique Blanc-Francard, Bruni's new producer, has said he was trying to "amplify Carla's limited harmonic system".
The album reprises the charming understatement that made her debut "Quelqu'un m'a dit" such a pleasant surprise.
Her voice is, by turns, soft, silky and seductive, complemented by some lovely acoustic arrangements, sparingly embellished by harp, flute, clarinet, banjo and ukulele.
The proceeds go to charity.
Give her a chance !

Live & Acoustic ReviewIt's really hard to find a good album from a young artist these days. If you don't know what you're looking for, you can find a lot of popular crap. You never have to worry about that with Mraz.
Live at Java Joe's is a real treasure. Mraz is a brilliant songwriter and you can really relate to him on this album. He's not (yet) my favorite artist of all time, but he's certainly the best live performer out there. No, his sets don't sound like his studio recordings-they're worlds better. On Java Joe's, you get that flavor without audience interference. I don't know how he got such a perfect recording, but he did.
Mraz's talent shines through on old favorites like "You and I Both." The live version is energized and free, unlike the studio recording. "Sleep All Day" with the "At Last" intro is absolutely brilliant. By far, my favorite track on this album is "0% Interest," but that's just because I have a personal bias toward that song. His guitar playing is brilliant as always, and his talent and love for vocal jazz music also graces this CD.
It doesn't matter if you're an old Mraz fan or if you only know him by his radio hits; you've got to own this album.
Best lyric: "There's something in the way you laugh that makes me feel like a child." (After an Afternoon)Live & Acoustic Overview

Aerial Boundaries ReviewAnyone interested in discovering the massive changes in contemporary acoustic guitar playing perpetrated by just one man, this is the mandatory first step. Aerial Boundaries is, without doubt, the record that presented Michael Hedges to the world as the ultimate acoustic guitar visionary, stretching the limits of the instrument to accomodate his uncanny musical ideas. I was fortunate enough to meet him on various occasions, and to study with John Stropes, responsible for his transcription work. On such occasions, Hedges told me that, despite the fact that he felt the necessity of evolving his music, this was his most accurate attempt to revolutionize the way the acoustic guitar should sound. Without question, his best and most essential recording.Aerial Boundaries OverviewNo Description AvailableNo Track Information AvailableMedia Type: CDArtist: HEDGES,MICHAELTitle: AERIAL BOUNDARIESStreet Release Date: 07/07/1987

The Life Aquatic: Studio Sessions ReviewI have had "The Life Aquatic" soundtrack on my wishlist for awhile, but never bought it for two reasons: it's copy-protected, and it only included a few of Seu Jorge's songs, NOT including my particular favorite from the movie, "Queen Bitch." I actually got Bowie's "Ziggy Stardust" album after seeing the movie, because I was so impressed with Seu Jorge's interpretations of Bowie's songs. Many songs from "Ziggy" are on this acoustic album, including "Starman," "Ziggy Stardust," "Lady Stardust," Rock 'n' Roll Suicide," "Suffragette City," and "Five Years." In the liner notes, David Bowie himself is quoted as saying, "Had Seu Jorge not recorded my songs in Portuguese I would never have heard this new level of beauty which he has imbued them with."
One reader was disappointed there was no lyrics sheet. I agree, especially since the lyrics in Portuguese don't correspond with Bowie's lyrics. By the way, "Seu Jorge" just means "Mr. George." "Seu" is not a first name, just a title. You may recognize him as "Man? Galinha" (literally "Chicken Manuel," but strangely translated as "Knockout Ned") from the movie "City of God."
This is a great album for fans of David Bowie and Brazilian music. If you like this album, or acuoustic Brazilian melodies in general, you should check out Jorge Ben's 1974 album "A T?bua de Esmeralda," which is probably the best album I've purchased in the past year. The Life Aquatic: Studio Sessions OverviewKnown for his work both as a musician and an actor, Seu Jorge was born in the favelas of Brazil and has risen to international fame. He's appeared in the critically acclaimed movie, 'City of God' as well as Wes Anderson's latest film, 'The Life Aquatic withSteve Zissou.' In 'The Life Aquatic' Seu Jorge's character appeared throughout as a sailor troubadour, strumming bossa nova-flavored versions of David Bowie songs in Portuguese. A handful of those songs appeared on the soundtrack to the film but now the entire recording session is being made available. Hollywood. 2005.

Light You Up ReviewLight You Up is the satisfying result of extensive collaboration with some of today's best songwriters, Chuck Cannon and Glen Phillips among them. Yet Mullins remains true to his own roots and signature style- his talent for connecting us to the subjects of his songs.
As with many of his previous albums, the musical style ranges from the rock-infused "California" to a soft, introspective "Blue Sky", originally recorded as part of the Thorns project; to the sultry "Light You Up"; and finally, a sprinkling of country. His current band is tight- great synergy on-stage and off. Tom Ryan's harmonies are a perfect counter-weight to Shawn's rich tones, and Patrick Blanchard continues to impress me with his nimble guitar work. You can tell these guys are having fun, making it that much more fun for the listener.
But you don't have to take my word for it: At a recent performance, Cannon noted that Shawn's interpretation of "The Ghost of Johnny Cash" is one of the few times he's been truly satified with the way an artist laid down one of his songs.
While Mullins provides enough action to sustain a casual listen, he's most satisfying when you have the time to pour yourself a cup of brew and listen-really listen-to what the man has to say.Light You Up Overview

Joyland ReviewI discovered Andy on youtube as many did and bought Art of Motion instantly! I recently saw him on tour where he was selling this CD/DVD before they were released and got me a signed copy. It has been great follow up material to his previous stuff. I think the only drawback might be that he has some accompaniment on a few of his songs (cello or drum rhythm) that does add to the overall song, but might take away a little from his solo guitar. What I loved about Art of Motion was listening closely to all the sound that Andy alone could produce from his guitar and adding in another instrument 'muddies' it up a little at times. It is still a good overall end result and shouldn't keep you from picking this one up.
There is also a DVD included where he tells a little about his history and shows you around the guitar shop where he taught guitar lessons. He also plays some of his songs live (not youtube style... very professional). Lastly, he gives some instruction on how to tune and play a few of his songs. He still plays too fast for me as a beginner, but as I improve, I will come back and try to give some of these a shot.
I like that he is just a regular guy with an amazing talent and he remains humble through it all. Keep up the awesome work, Andy!Joyland Overview

Live at Radio City ReviewWith lossless 5.1 24-bit/96kHz Dolby TrueHD, uncompressed 2.0 24-bit/48kHz PCM and a high bit-rate pristine VC-1 1080p picture, this marks not only the first time a Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds show is being released on a video format, but the first time we have a lossless high resolution surround mix of these two great musicians.
You can read the tracklist to see what is on this disc. D+T shows are always pretty special if you're lucky enough to get one.
Is the difference worth spending $3 more than the DVD? Only if you have a Blu-ray player or a Playstation 3, then you would be foolish to NOT buy it. Even if you don't have an HDTV the high bitrate VC-1 encode will look far superior at 480i on a standard television set than the DVD will.
If you do pick this up, get ready to experience Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds like never before.
As Peter Bracke said on High Def Digest about this release "the TrueHD is without a doubt the best audio presentation I've yet heard on a next-gen release. I mean it -- it's that good."
Do you hear that people? The best audio presentation of any Blu-ray or HD DVD disc to date.
Enjoy. =DLive at Radio City OverviewIn April 2007, Dave Mathews and Tim Reynolds embarked on a 3 city theatre tour, culminating with a performance in the intimate confines of Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Due to the small sized venues and extremely limited number of dates, tickets were practically impossible to get, making these new 2 CD and 2 DVD sets all the more desirable to the huge Dave Matthews band fanbase.

Acoustic Africa ReviewI picked this up on a whim at my local CD shop. Not all Putumayo compilations are as good - this one has a consistent feel and excellent tracks. What made it really worth it for me was the discovery of artists I didn't know. Alongside big names like Angelique Kidjo and Faya Tess, there was the beautiful voice of Dobet Gnahore from the Cote d'Ivoire, Gabriela Mendes from Cabo Verde and two artists from Guinea-Bissau I'd like to hear more from.Acoustic Africa OverviewOn Acoustic Africa, you'll discover gentle folk songs from Senegal, a protest song from South Africa, blues-tinged ballads from Mali and much more. The performers on this album are social activists, building awareness of the current conditions in Africa that affect the region and the world. They sing of love and faith, pain and oppression, and their ability to unite people.Vusi Mahlasela is an active social commentator who often addresses issues of social and political significance in his homeland. His gripping lyrics and lovely melodies on "Basimanyana" demonstrate why Mahlasela is also a leading figure in the contemporary South African music scene. One of Africa's most world-renowned performers, Habib Koité has shared the stage with some of the world's best-known artists. On the track "Baro," Koité's wistful vocals with swirling rhythms and intertwined harmonies demonstrate his distinctive sound. Koité's music video for "Wari"is a bonus enhancement on the CD, as well as one of Koité's best-loved songs.Other artists of note include Diogal Sakho, Laye Sow, Angelique Kidjo, and Eneida Marta.Later this fall Putumayo will translate the experience of the Acoustic Africa collection into a live performance setting, bringing together three of the African continent's most gifted singer-songwriters on one stage. The Putumayo Presents: Acoustic Africa Concert Tour featuring Acoustic Africa artists Habib Koité from Mali, Vusi Mahlasela from South Africa and Dobet Gnahoré from Ivory Coast will travel to more than 40 cities in North America and Europe, giving audiences a rare and unique opportunity to experience first-hand the dynamic performances of these truly enigmatic musicians.A portion of Putumayo's proceeds from the sale of this CD will be donated to Mercy Corps in support of their efforts to help AIDS victims and the victims of the civil war in Darfur.

Counting Stars ReviewPrime Cuts: Many Roads, Fool with a Fancy Guitar, The Magic Hour
"If you step inside this great glass elevator it will take us up above the city lights" are the first words of invitation Peterson cordially issues at the start of this disc. "Counting Stars" is a ruminative sonic journey whereby Peterson offers us to take us to the top of life's tower and offers us a panoramic view of life. From the top, we are able to make sense of the intricacies of life and the things that matter to us and God. It's also from such height we are able to count the stars of God's blessings as Abraham did all those years ago in the Bible. And what makes this pilgrimage such an endearing one is that Peterson is a writer of the heart. With carefully crafted narratives, well-chosen images and scripturally informed messages, Peterson is never a soporific tour guide. This may also be attributive to the fact that Peterson is more than just a Contemporary Christian artist he's also a Christian writer of children and young adult books. Even the song titles like "The Magic Hour," "Fool with a Fancy Guitar" and "Dancing in the Minefields" are rifle with a C. S. Lewis-esque intrigue that makes you want to listen to them.
Sonically, Peterson holds his very own well. Instead of giving in to the cookie cutter and sounding like the next Steven Curtis Chapman or Caedmon's Call, Peterson has carved out his own niche. Unbounded by convention, Peterson would often experiment with rustic instruments (like the banjo) to the lush arrangements of strings. Yet, most of the time, he keeps things simple with a folk and country slant to most of the songs' execution. And such simplicity in arrangements in no ways dilutes the powerful messages of the songs. Case in point is the piano-led ballad "Many Roads." "Many Roads" is a fine illustration of Romans 8:28 whereby Peterson sings about how the various roads of our lives are not serendipitous but they are God-ordained. Gentle and soothing to the soul is "The Magic Hour" a worship hymn to God's creativity in creation packed with picturesque lyrics that is just adoringly sweet.
While many contemporary Christian artists are reticent to speak boldly about Scriptural truths, Peterson knows no such restraints. "In the Night" strings together the stories of the Bible whereby God interceded in the midst of the most trying times with the song culminating in the Cross. This is a magnificent epic that sums up the consistency of God's sovereignty perfectly. Also, affective is the autobiographical "Fool with a Fancy Guitar"--here Peterson explains that without Christ empowering all he does, he's just a "fool with a fancy guitar." While the guitar-driven anthemic "The Reckoning" (though quite weak in its melody) is heart's cry to Christ's second coming in the face of suffering.
Peterson has not cast his sight so lofty that he does not deal with everyday relationships. The ethereal "Dancing in the Minefields" addresses the need to persevere in the midst of the ups and downs of a marital relationship. On the other hand, the average sounding "Planting Trees" speaks of the need to make a difference by investing in our people's lives. Perhaps, the major weakness of this CD is that Peterson has fallen into the same trap as many singer-songwriters. Some of the songs suffer from a lack of identity melodically, so a few songs tend to flow into each other. Other than this quibble, "Counting Stars" is a worshipful sonic experience that will get us to count the stars of God's blessings with repeated listening.

Keb Mo ReviewThere's something about acoustic blues, the idea of playing on a street corner deep in the Delta, running a bottle over a National Steel. Keb' Mo' is one of the best acoustic blues players today. Sometimes it's just him and his guitar, other times he's backed by drums and keyboards. Moore's playing is full and you rarely notice that there is no one else playing but him. His solo guitar work brings visions of Robert Johnson, and he pays tribute to the Master with two of his cuts. The rest of the tracks are penned by Moore with some collaboration from others.
Every tune on this album is good. Moore's playing adjusts between strumming, fingerpicking and slide. He also adds in banjo and harmonica, but his great asset is his voice. Smooth and sweat, it lacks the gravel sound we've become accustomed to for the blues, but his voice is perfect for solo guitar, almost as if it matches the sound of the guitar. "Victims of Comfort" is my favorite off the album with his strumming and voice interaction. The song is just him and his guitar, almost slow and sad sounding. "Angelina" throws in drums to keep the beat and Moore's fingers pluck the strings with an upbeat tempo. "Come On In My Kitchen" is the first of the Johnson covers, and he plays with a slide, and belts out some on the harmonica, with a little help from an organ and drums. Another great cut. More of the straight blues shuffle is heard on "Love Blues" again a solo guitar bit.
Each track is good on this album, and proves that Keb' Mo' is a name to be recognized with his unique sound of yesterday. Anyone who likes the original blues players like Johnson, will love this album, as will many people who don't love the blues. Moore's voice is soothing, and his playing has a relaxed feel to it. A pure joy to listen to.Keb Mo Overview

His earlier works such as Rising Force or Trilogy have become classics and are considered by many to be the definitive of musicianship and guitar artistry. If you are one of those people then you might as well not read any of the reviews including my own, as this album will please you. Any others whom maybe skeptical please continue reading.
This album as you should and probably already do know is predominantly acoustic. Which means if you are a fan of Yngwie's earlier riffing and faster paced Metallic sound then there is a 50/50 chance this album might be a bit of a disappointment. Now don't think this isn't an amazing album because it is honestly one of the best acoustic albums I have heard. There are electric guitar pieces but they are sparse and more a part of the background to help create a dynamic contrast to the acoustic guitars, rather then the rip roaring leads Yngwie is better known for.
The all around pace of the album is slow and at times has a haunting ambiance untouched by fellow guitar legends. There is quite a bit of orchestral/keyboard work in the background giving the songs more structure rather then just having the guitars alone, this I am thankful for. I love good guitar playing, but I enjoy it more when it is accented by some kind of backdrop. Being a long time fan of Malmsteen and his various works I can honestly say this is one of my favorite releases by him in some time.
I highly recommend this album to all of the Malmsteen fan base, but as I noted be cautious as fans of the Metal side of his music may be put off. Furthermore fans of acoustic and guitar playing in general will be impressed by his skills on this release and should also be able to appreciate this. However new fans should look into his earlier releases before delving into Angels Of Love, start with anything from the 80's and make your way towards his more recent releases. All in all and giving my honest and completely unbiased opinion; This album ranks up there with his earlier works as far as overall musicianship goes.
Thank you for reading and I hope that I have encouraged you to purchase this or other of Yngwie Malmsteen's various releases. I enjoy the feedback so if my review helped you or at least intrigued you please let me know by clicking the button below, again thank you for reading.

Give Till It's Gone ReviewIt's pathetic that there are only 5 reviews of this album. Ben Harper is such a gifted artist; one of the best of our time. It's unfortunate that he's basically only known for the song Steal My Kisses; his worst track in my opinion. That song is in no way a representation of Ben Harper's immense talent, although the album Burn To Shine as a whole is amazing. Give Till It's Gone is not quite as good as White Lies For Dark Times or Burn To Shine for that matter, but it is still a solid release. If I'm comparing this collection of songs to other Ben Harper works, it gets 4 stars, but if I'm comparing it to other contemporary music, it definitely deserves 5 stars. Obviously I chose the latter criteria. It is truly perplexing to me that Harper does not get more attention. The guy plays a mean slide guitar and his lyrics always come from the heart. I'm glad he has always stayed true to himself rather than going for the hit record. The songs on this album are very personal, and therefore, very powerful; there is nothing phony about Mr. Harper. I'm sure everyone knows by now that this album is about Ben's separation from Laura Dern. Unfortunately, the best art comes from pain, and Ben delivers once again with Give Till It's Gone. It's not his best, but it's definitely not his worst. It's just another solid effort from the master of meloncholy.Give Till It's Gone Overview

Our Endless Numbered Days ReviewHere I am, a grown man, who listens to everything from the Shins to Tool. I was listening to this album in my bed after I bought it that day. I was really tired, so I kind of drifted off (not because the album was boring, far from it - I was just tired). When "Fever Dream" came on I instantly became aware again. It's not like this song has a loud or startling beginning, either - no Iron & Wine song does. But the guitar line was so beautiful my mind must have said "wake up and hear this." I rarely hear a song that affects me so...so dramatically as "Fever Dream" did, and still does. I just layed there, captured by it's sheer gentle beauty. It aroused so many emotions inside that were lying dormant somewhere inside me. The fact is, I've been extrememly lonely lately, and there hasn't been anyone I felt could really sympathize with me. But this song captured my emotions so well I shed tears. You probably think I'm lame, but I just needed to share how deeply this song affected me.Our Endless Numbered Days OverviewListening to Our Endless Numbered Days makes plain Sam's defttouch with words and melody; one that allows him to turn out stories aboutlove, loss, faith, or the lack of it that are at once personal anduniversal, set to music that is sweetly haunting and timeless.

Pink Moon ReviewIn the throes of a depression that would see him dead at the age of 26 from an overdose of anti-depression medication, Nick Drake still managed to produce his last album, "Pink Moon." Unlike his first two efforts, which consisted of orchestrated folk-pop music, this 1972 album was just Drake playing his acoustic guitar and singing (with a bit of piano here and there). The result is a bleak testament to melancholy and alienation that has a haunting and pristine beauty. There are only eleven songs, most of which are under three minutes in length, which is why the album is not even a half-hour long, but there is a sense in which anything longer would be too much to bear. "Pink Moon," by itself, justifies Drake's status as a cult figure among those who love folk-rock.
Ironically, you have probably hear Nick Drake's music before, because the title track was used for a Volkswaggen commercial, just another example of how music is perverted to commercial interests (what else is new?). I have been spending the cold winter putting together mixes of folk music (in the broadest sense) and making a concerted effort to get beyond Bob Dylan and the Byrds to explore the likes of Sandy Denny and the Beau Brummels. Checking out Sandy Denny led me to Fairport Convention and Richard Thompson, and eventually to Ralph McTell and Nick Drake. Now I can only wonder what rock I have been living under that I have never come across these artists before.
The title track is a beautiful folk ballad, performed with just Drake's superb acoustic guitar playing and haunting vocal. Throughout the album you notice the depth of his lyrics and his guitar playing. The latter might have been lost in an album with orchestration, but here you have the opportunity to listen to the openings of "Radio" and "Parasite" unadorned. For the former a choice example would be the opening of what is probably the best song on the album (it is hard to choose), "Which Will," which begins: "Which will you go for/Which will you love/Which will you choose from/From the stars above?" There is a simple elegance to the lyrics, captured by the vocals, and complimented by the more complex guitar playing.
Nick Drake only produced three albums, so there is no reason not to have all of them in your music library. These works represent the very best of the British folk-rock scene and Drake is a first rate singer-songwriter whose songs of failed romance, mortality, and depression are quite affective. Drake intended "Pink Moon" to be his final album, saying he had nothing left to record. When you lose yourself listening to these songs, you can actually convince yourself that this was true.Pink Moon OverviewReissue of the late British folk icon's final full-lengthalbum, released in 1972. 11 tracks. Slipcase. Island.

Give Up the Ghost ReviewI've had the vinyl release for several days now and am quite pleased while looking forward to acquiring the CD for my car. I've been listening to Brandi Carlile and the Hanseroth brothers since I received a 'song-of-the-day' iTunes card from Starbucks in October of '07 highlighting the song 'Turpentine'. A few of these songs written by Brandi alone are so heartfelt, it truly feels as though she's desperately reaching out to disconnected people in her past.
The subtle use of instrumentation and orchestration in this third release is beautifully produced and does not in any way obscure from Brandi's unparalleled voice. She could sing (or yodel) her weekly grocery list, and I would drop what I'm doing to listen... anytime.
My current favorite tracks are 'Looking Out' (w/Amy Ray), 'Dying Day', 'Pride And Joy', 'Before It Breaks', and 'Touching the Ground'. Basically the entire album will grow on you. The upbeat song 'Caroline' is a wonderful treat with Elton John playing the piano the way ONLY Elton John can. Highly recommended!Give Up the Ghost Overview

Try John Mayer Trio Live in Concert ReviewJohn Mayer is stepping out in a new direction with this disc. Pino Palladino and Steve Jordan are unarguably world-class musicians, and they have contributed thier always-stellar playing here. John Mayer's guitar playing is certainly technically proficient, and I believe it has real soul, too. "Wait until tomorrow" is a good example of that soul. I don't expect him to be Buddy Guy, though Buddy himself has endorsed John. The CD isn't that well mixed, but no worse than 75% of albums released these days. Before you believe the 1-star reviews, take a closer look.Try John Mayer Trio Live in Concert OverviewOn the heels of a pair of multi-platinum albums and three Grammy Awards, John Mayer has stripped things down to the bone by forming the John Mayer Trio with drummer Steve Jordan (Bruce Springsteen, Rolling Stones) and bassist Pino Palladino (the Who, Jeff Beck). Their groundbreaking sold-out tour is documented on the incredible live album John Mayer Trio Live. The new album includes a live recording from the House of Blue in Chicago and includes both Mayer originals and the Trio's interpretations of cover songs. The album features 11 songs including 'Who Did You Think I Was'. Columbia. 2005.
