Monk ReviewNo, there is no Randy Newman on this album. This is the Season One soundtrack. I do like "It's A Jungle Out There", but not as much as the original theme, presented here in three versions! Jeff Beal's amazing jazz score for the first season ranged from peppy and fun to dark and moody and helped set the tone for some of the greatest scenes in the series. The main theme and "A Clean Apartment" are so much fun to listen to that they demand multiple replayings, and "Trudy's Theme" is hauntingly beautiful. Any true Monk fan should add this to their music collection immediately.Monk OverviewNo Description Available.Genre: Soundtracks & ScoresMedia Format: Compact DiskRating: Release Date: 27-JUL-2004

Swing Kids: Music From The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack ReviewFirst off let me commend the original score by James Horner, it goes along very well with the movie and stands on its own outside.
Second, I'll explain why the swing recordings on this CD are a must have even though they've been recorded before. I've read one review saying that you can get these songs on other original artists' CDs for better quality. It's not true. The sound quality is alright, nothing special, but it's the ARRANGEMENT that the film makers put in these songs that makes them unique. My favorite is "Shout And Feel It", which was originally recorded by Count Basie with all-big-band style. On Swing Kids, however, they replaced the brass section with Django-Reinhart-style guitar solo, which I think is just priceless! My only drag on this CD is the shortenning version of Benny Goodman's originally 8-minute-long hit "Sing Sing Sing," but one good thing about it is there's less of the annoying Harry-James-style trumpet interlude. "Bei Mir Bis Schon" is another highlight. Originated with names like Benny Goodman and the Andrews Sisters, whose flowery singing was too much of a distraction for audiences to appreciate the beautiful tune of the song. This version with Janis Seigel is much better, since they simplified the singing and put more emphasis on the instruments, giving it a smooth flow. However, the ULTIMATE STROKE OF GENIUS is combining Benny Goodman's "Life Goes To A Party" with Count Basie's "Jumping At The Woodside." Those songs on their original recordings were kind of bland, but mixing them together with a few instrumental rearrangements created a whole new exciting piece.
Over all, Swing Kids would be a great addition in anyone's swing collection, but you have to be a real avid fan of swing to fully appreciate this CD.Swing Kids: Music From The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Overview

Dueling Banjos From The Original Soundtrack: Deliverance ReviewWonderful, exhilarating, breathtaking music, both in speed and execution. Banjoist Eric Weissberg has spent most of his career in relative obscurity as a studio musician, which is a shame as he is one of the finest banjo players to ever pick up the instrument. City born and musically educated at the University of Wisconsin and Juilliard, Weissberg was a seminal banjo picker who combined the power and taste of Earl Scruggs along with the progressive melodic banjo stylings of the 1960s.
Obviously, the album features the definitive version of "Dueling Banjos" that Weissberg recorded with Steve Mandel. The rest of the tracks come from an incredible album called "New Dimensions in Banjo and Bluegrass," released by Elektra in 1963. Most of the tracks feature brilliant dual arrangments between Weissberg and Marshall Brickman, a banjoist who left the music world behind to write movies for Hollywood (The Bad News Bears, co-writer for Annie Hall). They are backed by guitar legend, Clarence White, who creates beautiful backup runs on songs like "Pony Express" and fine solos throughout. I think the fiddler was Gordon Terry, whose atmospheric style on "Reuben's Train" will make your hair stand on end.
The album is loaded with famous and oft-copied banjo licks, including the descending single-string work on Little Maggie, the "bumblebee break" on an insane version of "Shucking the Corn," the C-F-E-C chord sequence on "Riding the Waves," and some of the fastest (and cleanest) banjo work you'll ever hear anywhere on songs like Rawhide and Hard, 'Aint it Hard.
If you do not already own this CD, BUY IT. And if anyone in the music business is listening, you need to scrape up some money and produce a dozen more acoustic albums by Weissberg and Brickman. These guys deserve more of a legacy than a single album!Dueling Banjos From The Original Soundtrack: Deliverance Overview

The Life Aquatic: Studio Sessions ReviewI have had "The Life Aquatic" soundtrack on my wishlist for awhile, but never bought it for two reasons: it's copy-protected, and it only included a few of Seu Jorge's songs, NOT including my particular favorite from the movie, "Queen Bitch." I actually got Bowie's "Ziggy Stardust" album after seeing the movie, because I was so impressed with Seu Jorge's interpretations of Bowie's songs. Many songs from "Ziggy" are on this acoustic album, including "Starman," "Ziggy Stardust," "Lady Stardust," Rock 'n' Roll Suicide," "Suffragette City," and "Five Years." In the liner notes, David Bowie himself is quoted as saying, "Had Seu Jorge not recorded my songs in Portuguese I would never have heard this new level of beauty which he has imbued them with."
One reader was disappointed there was no lyrics sheet. I agree, especially since the lyrics in Portuguese don't correspond with Bowie's lyrics. By the way, "Seu Jorge" just means "Mr. George." "Seu" is not a first name, just a title. You may recognize him as "Man? Galinha" (literally "Chicken Manuel," but strangely translated as "Knockout Ned") from the movie "City of God."
This is a great album for fans of David Bowie and Brazilian music. If you like this album, or acuoustic Brazilian melodies in general, you should check out Jorge Ben's 1974 album "A T?bua de Esmeralda," which is probably the best album I've purchased in the past year. The Life Aquatic: Studio Sessions OverviewKnown for his work both as a musician and an actor, Seu Jorge was born in the favelas of Brazil and has risen to international fame. He's appeared in the critically acclaimed movie, 'City of God' as well as Wes Anderson's latest film, 'The Life Aquatic withSteve Zissou.' In 'The Life Aquatic' Seu Jorge's character appeared throughout as a sailor troubadour, strumming bossa nova-flavored versions of David Bowie songs in Portuguese. A handful of those songs appeared on the soundtrack to the film but now the entire recording session is being made available. Hollywood. 2005.

The Cheetah Girls ReviewCHEETAH SISTERS - This song has n awsome beat. it starts out slow then it gets faster. If you have seen the movie, the song is shorter than on TV.
CINDERELLA - This is one of my favorite songs on this C.D. The "electric" sound in it is really cool.
GIRL POWER - This song is just like how it's heard on TV. It is kind of an up-beat song and one of the best on the CD.
TOGETHER WE CAN - This song is so cool. The only thing wrong with it is that it's really short. But I like it anyway.
C'MON - This song is ok. If you are into rap music though, you will love it. It has many parts with the DJ "doing his thing" and the singer will just say something like "yeah" to keep you awake.
GIRLFRIEND - This is not the best song. The back-up singers kind of mumle so you can't hear what they're saying in they're solos.
BREAKTHROUGH - This song is my absolute FAVORITE!!! It's beat is pretty fast and I like to dance and it is SO MUCH FUN to dance to!!! I LOVE IT!!!
END OF THE LINE - This song is very good but slow. It's about a girl asking her friends if they are still going to be friends forever. I like it even though it's slow.
I HOPE YOU BUY THIS AMAZING CD AND ENJOY IT!!!The Cheetah Girls Overview

Conan the Barbarian ReviewBasil Poledouris' score to Conan the Barbarian is one of the great powerhouses of film music and remains as one of my favorite film scores to this date.
The score is a perfect blend of melodic beauty and raw power with a huge orchestral sound and lots of wonderful choral passages that range from haunting and slow to in-your-face and over-the-top. I could go on forever on this score, but suffice it to say that I really can't think of a more perfect score than this.
As for the CD's sound quality...
The sound quality is definitely dated and isn't quite as crisp and clean as one would hope. However, what it lacks in sound quality, it more than makes up for in musical quality. I've purchased a number of albums containing re-recordings of Conan music and while the sound quality has been better, NOTHING has matched the emotion and power of the original film soundtrack.
Differences between the editions...
This 12-track Milan edition was released first, followed later by an expanded 16-track edition by Varese Sarabande.
The Milan CD runs around 49 minutes, while the Varese edition runs about 67 minutes. The Varese edition includes pretty much all the same music as the Milan release, with one exception:
The first track of the Milan edition opens up with Mako's opening prologue speech which then immediately segues into the "Anvil of Crom" opening. The Varese track opens up directly with "Anvil of Crom".
The Varese edition adds the following four tracks:
- Mountain of Power Procession (3:21)
- The Tree of Woe (3:31)
- Recovery (2:11)
- Death of Rexor (5:34)
and expands the following two tracks:
- The Leaving/The Search (5:59)
- The Kitchen/The Orgy (6:30)
Compared to the original Milan tracks:
- The Search (3:09)
- The Orgy (4:14)
All in all, the Milan edition is missing about 19 minutes worth of music.
In my opinion, the Varese edition is definitely worth seeking out, but even if you decide to get the 12-track Milan edition, the music is worth getting in whatever form you can.
For any fan of film music and for any fan of the film, this score is definitely a must have!
However, if you're an audiophile, you may want to think twice.Conan the Barbarian OverviewOut of print in the U.S.!Basil Poledouris' exciting score to Arnold Schwarzenegger's 1982 barbarian epic. Conan The Barbarian was Arnold's big-screen breakthrough and was the film that launched his amazing film career, which eventually led the Austrian-born actor straight to the Governor's mansion! It also inspired the successful sequel, Conan The Destroyer and the semi-sequel, Red Sonja. 12 tracks. Lilo & Stitch ReviewI love this sountrack! I guess it helps that Lilo and Stitch is my favorite movie, but this soundtrack is definitely a winner.
This thing is packed with Elvis hits from start to finish, and all of us old folk will be moving our hips again to these old tunes that were still pretty popular when we were young. It's nice to see the King resurrected once again for an amazing movie.
Then there's two Hawaiian songs which are simply beautiful, very happy and very traditional in feel. The sountrack opens with Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride which is very fun, used at the beginning of the film, and later we hear He Mele No Lilo which is the one they played while surfing later in the show. There's a version of Can't Help Falling In Love by A-Teens, which is pretty good, and Burning Love by Wynona, which is spectacular! And if you saw the movie you'll notice that this song has Stitch on guitar at the ending, it's worth a smile to think about that scene while listening to this song.
I've said it in another review of the movie, that Stitch is my fav Disney character, and the fact that in the movie Stitch played some of these songs (with the help of Lilo), makes the whole thing more enjoyable.
The last three tracks are score from the movie. Not as exciting as what came before it, but I guess it's necessary to include them. It is fun though to listen and try and pick out the parts from the movie that they came from, Stitch to the rescue is of course from the part where Lilo is kidnapped by Gantu, forcing Stitch and Jumba to fly after him in their own spaceship, as stitch tries to rescue Lilo.
Very good fun. There's only one problem...this sountrack doesn't include Nani singing "Aloha 'Oe"! How sad! I was really looking forward to hearing that song again, as that part of the movie had me in tears, yes, tears. And lot's of them. Why they didn't inlcude it here is beyond me. So I take 1/2 a point off for that and give this sountrack 4 1/2 stars. Still very good though, be sure to buy it.Lilo & Stitch Overview

Gettysburg: Music From The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack ReviewI have been to Gettysburg with my wife and my sons many times (as visitors from Europe). My late cousin Gen.Phil Kearny is the only person commemorated on the battlefield who was already dead before the battle - see the New Jersay Memorial. So I take the subject very seriously and this score absolutely bowled us over. It is absolutely outstanding and the Cd has been played incessantly since it arrived from Amazon. Randy Edleman is to be congratulated on a superb piece of contrapunctal craftmanship and TNT on having the faith and dedication to complete the film. The reinactors are such a surperb group of people, without whom, this music would never have been written and we would have been so much poorer.Gettysburg: Music From The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Overview

Kind of Magic ReviewI could care less about Queen's popularity in the USA in the '80's. Popularity often has little to do with actual talent, as evidenced by the recent and seemingly undying wave of crappy boy-bands and bubblegum pop divas. If Queen were ever interested in popularity it was probably on an esoteric level, because no matter what they always churned out some brilliant and amazing music. "A Kind of Magic" is perhaps their best album of the '80's, mainly because of its connection with "Highlander," one of the best films of the decade. Only a band of such musical grandeur and classical pomposity like Queen could produce such amazing music for such a film.
"One Vision" as well its extended version (vision) were featured on the "Iron Eagle" soundtrack, and its claim to fame is that it was written before Live Aid, though recorded after it. A good epic song with amazing interplay of guitars and synths, as well as Freddie's little joke at the end.
"A Kind of Magic," the title track, and taken from a line in "Highlander" definitely fits the bill as one of Queen's best pop-rock songs. Brian May never ceases to amaze with his interweaving guitar lines. Roger Taylor's lyrics tie in perfectly with the film, and John Deacon's basslines, while simple, are infectious. A song so good, it's the only one featured in the sequel.
"One Year of Love" is a simple little love song, with Freddie giving one of his best vocal performances. The saxophone solo complements nicely.
"Pain is So Close to Pleasure" is an okay song, though not one of my favorites. I'll give points to Freddie for an amazing falsetto vocal, but the song contains little else to keep my interest.
"Friends Will Be Friends" is also one I could have done without, although it became a bit of a live staple. It's simplicity of theme and lyric probably made it the perfect pop feel-good song.
Brian May has outdone himself with "Who Wants to Live Forever," one of the saddest and most beautiful songs ever written. The orchestra by Michael Kamen ties it in with the film's score seamlessly, and the vocal interplay between Brian and Freddie will bring tears to the eyes. A previous reviewer remarked that all "Highlander" fans would want this played at their funeral...I won't argue.
Things get kicking into high gear with "Gimme the Prize," also known as "Kurgan's Theme." Loud, bombastic, thundering, and just plain evil sounding, this song captures the character of Kurgan. One can sense from the sound of this song the man's evil and his thirst for death. The samples from the movie showcasing some of the character's best lines certainly add to the overall atmosphere, and the guitar solo sounds oddly Scottish with an almost electric bagpipe sound. The drum and guitar riffs also tie in nicely with "Princes of the Universe." Great song.
"Don't Lose Your Head" might've been better on this album if it was featured in a version that was closer to how it sounded in the film. Its synth bassline was only used briefly in the film, but it worked. Here, it just sounds like a regular darkwave song, which isn't really bad, but not great either. Joan Armatrading's backup vocal is nothing to speak of either as far as I'm concerned.
And now the "Highlander" theme, the ultimate musical and lyrical complement to the film, Freddie Mercury's short but epic "Princes of the Universe." The song is chock full of Queen's trademark vocal melodies and choruses, layers upon layers upon layers of guitars and vocals. Roger's drumming is top-notch on this song, just powerful and loud. Deacon's bass keeps the sound grounded, while May's guitar licks just soar to unbelievable heights. Did I mention the vocals, the opening vocal chorus is probably the best Queen has ever sounded. Easily my favorite Queen song...period!
"Forever" is probably filler, but a solo piano rendition of "Who Wants to Live Forever" just adds one more sweet touch to link the album to the film.
I honestly think this is Queens' best album of the '80's, and not just because of the "Highlander" connection. I really think these songs are the best Queen has written since 1977, and they would not write an album so good until 1991's "Innuendo." I will miss Freddie Mercury and Queen, but with albums so great as this, they left a wonderful legacy. There have been far too many "Highlander" spinoffs since the original film, and only the TV-series came close to getting it right, but for me nothing will beat the original film, and no sound will ever be "Highlander" more than Queen's "A Kind of Magic."Kind of Magic Overview

The Holiday ReviewIt's absolutely amazing how people still don't get the concept of a scores soundtrack, then rate it low because "It's just boring background music." If you scroll down to the track listings and you don't see any artists listed, that should be your first clue. With that said...
I think Hans Zimmer did an excellent job on the score for the "Holiday," and it's very obvious that he took his inspiration from the wonderful Ennio Morricone, a legendary composer whose music is actually featured in this movie (when Jack Black's character, Miles, meets Kate Winslet's, Iris, for the first time, you can hear it playing from his car). I'm a sucker for lushly romantic music, and if you are too, you won't be disappointed in this music.
The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because the music is somewhat repetitive. There are three or four main themes that Zimmer has interwoven and enhanced. It also does not include, to my knowledge, the songs that were written for the characters of Iris and Arthur. Here are a few of my favorites:
"Maestro" - This is the opening theme at the very beginning of the movie, played by Miles on the piano. It's absolutely beautiful and one of the more Morricone-esque songs on the score.
"Iris and Jasper" - This song plays throughout the scene at the office, when Iris learns of Jasper's engagement and goes home alone. It's mostly piano and strings, and there is gorgeous guitar at the end.
"Anything Can Happen" - Mostly piano, this has the Santa Ana winds theme when Iris is standing outside her LA house after meeting Miles.
"Kiss Goodbye" - This is a reprise of the Maestro theme and has a little bit of the Santa Ana winds theme as well, but it is much more upbeat than in 'Anything Can Happen' and has some choral voices.
"Cry" - Most everyone who liked the score has been looking for this song -it's the upbeat energetic song playing when Amanda is running over the snowy countryside to Graham near the end of the movie. Please definitely give this soundtrack a try if you're into movie scores. Hans Zimmer really did a wonderful job, and it's a great CD to relax to.

Notting Hill: Music From The Motion Picture ReviewI never considered myself a romantic but I really love this soundtrack. The bonus track "Everything About You" is a surprise good one, with what I thought was a line stolen from the movie White Men Can't Jump ("I love the way you bring me water when I'm thirsty in your bed"), a couple of oldies but goodies thrown in and unlike some instrumentals the ones on this CD are quite effective and not an automatic "skip" although pretty dry. A particular favourite along with "Everything About You" for me is "She" by Elvis Costello, and "Gimme Some Lovin'" is a good car ride song (makes you want to drive right on over to your boyfriend's place :)) Boyzone's "No Matter What" is fun to pay out and sing along to especially that all too distinctive Ronan Keating's voice "No matter where they take ush" and isn't anyone sick of "When You Say Nothing At All" yet? Actually this is just a fantastic CD for sitting around at home in your underwear alone, turning it way up and singing at the top of your voice. Too 'uncool' to take seriously, it's a great change for unwinding. Damn good stuff.Notting Hill: Music From The Motion Picture Overview13 TRACKS PLUS BONUS TRACKS

Paris, Texas: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack ReviewOne of the immortal scenes: Harry Dean Stanton in the desert, scrambling out of nowhere, a tortured Everyman in search of solace. And then Ry Cooder`s slide guitar notes, modeled on Blind Willie Johnson`s " Dark was the night" - when have so few notes said so much? The music and the film images fit like hand and glove. I do not know whether "Paris, Texas" is a great movie, but I do know that it, for me and a host of others, is one of the most unforgettable movies ever, with images and feelings that refuse to let go, creeping under the skin and staying there. The music underlines this feeling, with not a surplus note, every little vibrato inuitively perfectly suited to the atmosphere conveyed in the movie - love and loss, union and aloneness, and, above all, compassion . If the music doesn`t reach these feelings, the experience may be that of the 1-star reviewer quoted. But to me, this music is one of the most durable selections I have in my 1000-piece collection, one of the few that always brings rewards and new nuances when listened to.Paris, Texas: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack OverviewCD > POPULAR MUSIC > MOVIE SOUNDTRACK

Princess Bride ReviewThe soundtrack is an integral part of a movie. Music helps intensify and brighten images and action that take place upon the screen. Many times purchasing the soundtrack turns into a disappointment because no connection was made between the music on the soundtrack and the movie. That is definitely not the case with Mark Knopfler's musical score for "The Princess Bride". Knopfler, as a composer, has an incredible knack of capturing images in his music.
The music in the movie is barely noticeable. It doesn't detract from the movie at all. You won't notice how much of an impact that it does have until you hear the music on its own without the movie playing over it. If you have seen the movie only once, the songs on this soundtrack will conjure the images from the movie. You can almost hear Fezzik and Inigo exchanging rhymes on "The Friend's Song", and the daring climb on "The Cliffs of Insanity".
As you listen to the soundtrack, you'll be seeing the movie in your mind. There are few soundtracks that are so intertwined with the movie that they can elicit such imagery. Knopfler is able to pull off that feat. If you liked the movie, the soundtrack is definitely worth it.Princess Bride OverviewDigitally remastered using HDCD technology, this is a reissue of the Dire Straits guitarist's soundtrack toRob Reiner's comical fantasy love story from 1987 starringCary Elwes, Robin Wright, Mandy Patinkin, Andre The Giant,Billy Crystal, Carol Kane & Peter Falk. 12 tracks.--This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

Brothers of the Head ReviewI watched a preview of this movie online and just from that I thought the music was astounding, so I went on Amazon and ordered it. When I got it I found that all the music was of a similar style and fell in love with it right away. It's like London's version of a british punk/garage/cult 60's style genre. It's definitely unique.Brothers of the Head Overview

Serendipity: Music from the Miramax Motion Picture ReviewHey All!
Serendipity is one of my favorite movies - yes, sappy and syrupy - but hey, it hit the spot. And here's a complete list of songs for those of you die-hard fans (like myself) who try to put together a REAL soundtrack:
1. Cool Yule - Louis Armstrong (opening department store scene)
2. Hark the Herald Angels Sing - Lewis Ross as the New American Guitar Ensemble
3. Moonlight Kiss - Bap Kennedy (plays from when Sara gets into the cab through the skating scene)
4. January Rain - David Gray (plays during giving of the phone number)
5.Joy To the World - Tuba Christmas ("that's a lot of tuba")
6. Fast Forward - Alan Silvestri (instrumental score music)
7. Waiting in Vain - Annie Lennox (Sara in San Francisco)
8. 83 - John Mayer - (when Jonathan is going to get hair cut)
9. "Sarah Smile" - Hall & Oats (kid on bike singing it while John is in taxi)
10. From Rusholme With Love (Serendipity Mix) - Mint Royale (Lars' music)
11. Never a Day - Wood (playing in club after Lars' finishes his set)
12. Black Eyed Dog - Nick Drake (just a clip used in scene where Halle is asleep and John is drinking beer AND after John and Jeremy see Sara's sister in the window)
13. Rose Rouge - St. Germaine (used in wherehouse w/Eugene Levy AND at the end on the plane and at beginning when Eve says "PRADA")
14. Shake It Off - Jarvis Church (Used instrumentally when Sara and Eve search driving range)
15. Charley's Prelude - Don Byron (at wedding rehearsal)
16. When You Know - Shawn Colvin (when Jonathan gets "Love in the Time of Cholera" from Halle and in cab).
17. January Rain - David Gray (used again here at the ice rink)
18. Northern Sky - Nick Drake (Jonathan and Sara meet again)
19. Cool Yule (reprise) - Louis Armstrong (back in dept. store)
20. The Distance - Evan & Jaron (during credits)
21. This Year - Chantal Kreviazuk (during credits)
Okay, hope that helps. One more little tip for you wanting the instrumental score by Alan Silvestri (i.e., When Jonathan is reading his obituary, etc.) ... The best you're going to get (I think) is doing what I did ... hook up a CD recorder to your DVD player (or VHS) and record it directly off the DVD/VHS. This way, you'll not only have the music but you may have some audio clips of dialogue too. It's fun!
Trailer Music: All instrumental music ... don't know where it's from (it may be all Alan Silvestri's) ... the only "real" song in the trailer (at least the one on the DVD) is "Babylon" by David Gray.
Hope that helps. Happy Listening!

Talk to Her (Score) ReviewHey, I was as surprised as anyone else to see Caetano pop out of nowhere in this creepy-but-classy Pedro Almodovar film... and his version of "Cucurrucucu Paloma" is as charming and transcendent a performance as you could ever ask for. Okay, so now a bunch of people are wondering which Caetano albums to buy that sound similar in tone to that song. Of the top of my head, I'd recommend acoustically-oriented records such as 1975's "Coisa" and "Joia," and particularly the more recent European concert album, "Omaggio A Federico E Guilietta," which features Caetano playing with pretty much the same ensemble as seen in the film, and has the same subtle cultural spendor. It also features avant-pop cellist Jacques Morelenbaum, who has been Caetano's bandleader for the last decade or so. They're certainly all favorites of mine.Talk to Her (Score) Overview

Battlestar Galactica: Season One ReviewBear McCreary took over as the main composer for Battlestar Galactica after Richard Gibbs left to continue working on movie scores. With McCreary writing all of the main music for the first season, I found the music even more rich then that of the miniseries that preceded it. Not only is the soundtrack rich with low-synth percussion action tracks, but it also employs such genres as opera, muzak, and string orchestral to convey the feeling of a scene. The use of drums in this soundtrack trumps their use in the miniseries with even catchier drum rolls.
Most notably, the string orchestral pieces Passacaglia and the Shape of Things to Come are definitely the best pieces on this non-generic soundtrack. Even with an orchestra at his disposal, McCreary did not write any bombastic score and instead wrote beautiful soothing melodies that ironically contrast the scenes in which they are placed, making those sequences all the more memorable and enticing. Battlestar Galactica is successfully breaking free from the shackles of the modern sci-fi genre, and the music which strays so far from the orthodox helps it do so.Battlestar Galactica: Season One Overview

Music from the Motion Picture "Purple Rain" ReviewI was in seventh grade the year Purple Rain came out. It was a time of making out with girls, riding my bike around the neighborhood after dark, hanging out with my best friends in our clubhouse, and just generally trying to gain more freedom from my parents. But the one thing that really stands out about this formative year is how much my friends and I utterly loved Purple Rain and its accompanying soundtrack. Stretching an extension chord from the garage to our clubhouse, my friends and I would watch the movie and listen to the soundtrack just about every Friday night for that summer. While probably somewhat of a bizarre thing to admit now, it was truly a great time which I'll never forget.
As it stands today, the Purple Rain Soundtrack is still one of the best albums I've ever heard. The nostalgic qualities it possesses after just a few notes into "Let's Go Crazy" are very powerful to me and remind me of those days camping out in the backyard on weekends. And I could even care less if Prince ever made another album after Purple Rain. It's the one! Sign of the Times was a fair effort, granted, and his first couple albums have charming appeal, but everything after Sign of the Times just missed the boat or ventured too far into insipid R&B territory.
So what exactly is it that makes Purple Rain so much more enjoyable than the rest of his catalog? What makes it the indisputable stand-out? For me, I think it has a lot to do with the Revolution's sound. They had a huge influence on the aesthetic of Prince's early albums, particularly from the input of Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman (a/k/a Wendy & Lisa). Furthermore the production and instruments used by this group of musicians were less polished than what you'd hear from Prince today. And therein lies the primary reason for his decline over time.
The moment "Let's Go Crazy" opens with its funeral-esque keyboards and Prince's dialogue about life, there's a certain prevailing darkness. It remains until the ending moments of "Purple Rain," which I'll get to in a moment. And even though this is a pop record by design, there isn't the sugary sweet coating typically associated with this sort of music.
"Computer Blue" is another Purple Rain highlight. With a solo from Prince and an unobtrusive rhythm section, we get to hear the intricacies of his guitar skills. The song leads directly into the infamous "Darling Nikki." It's usually a favorite among the female crowd, but I find it to be one of the best due to the screeching vocals that have become synonymous with Prince. "When Doves Cry" is self-explanatory. "I Would Die 4 U" shows the same keyboard flair Prince possessed when writing the music for Stevie Nicks' "Stand Back." It glides along effortlessly and stands as one of the best tracks to grace this 40-minute experience.
Ending with Prince's most recognized song, "Purple Rain," I can't help but declare this one of the most perfect pop songs ever recorded. It's been played to death and just about everyone knows it, but that doesn't mean a thing to me. I'm talking about a song that should never be mentioned without words like iconic, transcendent, or epic attached to it. It also happens to be a gripping part of the film, in which Prince dedicates its lyrics to his father who has just committed suicide. Very few songs have since matched its beauty or timelessness.
Ultimately, I'd admit that it's inconsequential to review an album like the Purple Rain Soundtrack. It had such a huge impact on '80s culture and is still one of the most highly respected soundtracks in the history of our generation. It doesn't need press and it certainly doesn't need justification from me, but it's certainly worthy of celebration from time to time. And really, that's all I'm here to do. Well, that and maybe to relive my past a bit.Music from the Motion Picture "Purple Rain" OverviewGospel, rock, funk...it's all here on this soundtrack to the film loosely based on Prince's life. He grabbed an Academy Award and two Grammies for these gems and you'll know 'em all: Let's Go Crazy; When Doves Cry; I Would Die 4 U; plus the title track and more!
