Monk ReviewNo, there is no Randy Newman on this album. This is the Season One soundtrack. I do like "It's A Jungle Out There", but not as much as the original theme, presented here in three versions! Jeff Beal's amazing jazz score for the first season ranged from peppy and fun to dark and moody and helped set the tone for some of the greatest scenes in the series. The main theme and "A Clean Apartment" are so much fun to listen to that they demand multiple replayings, and "Trudy's Theme" is hauntingly beautiful. Sting in the Tail ReviewOriginally formed in Hanover, Germany in the late 60s, Scorpions have over 40 years of experience as a band with some incredible hits under their belts. With their first album dropping in 1972, Scorpions are now in their 38th year of recorded material and it is reported to be their last. As the first track, "Raised on Rock," opens, it is easy to point out similarities to one of their biggest hits, 1984's "Rock You Like a Hurricane." Don't think that's because Klaus Maine, Rudolph Schenker, Matthias Jabs, and company have run out of ideas; on the contrary.
They simply tip their hats to the sounds that made them rock royalty while pursuing a conclusion worthy of their storied career. With Sting in the Tail, Scorpions have released an album of classic rock that stands with some of their finest releases of the past.
Although hints of their hits can be heard throughout, Sting in the Tail does an excellent job of combining the old with the new. The production is crisp and clean with an emphasis clearly placed on modern compression techniques that maximize the volume potential of the band, but the music still has that classic vibe that made them famous to begin with.
Meine's vocals are shockingly present and don't appear to have lost any of their hard hitting ability. Singers typically show their age on ballads, but when Scorpions slow things down on "Lorelei" and "Sly," Meine's voice soars over the mix without ever sacrificing a high note. Both power ballads utilize the same gradual build in dynamic throughout that is so characteristic of their sound in the eighties. "Lorelei" even makes use of the classic call and response harmonization on the chorus fans of the classic rock genre adore.
Scorpions continue to be the masters of a decade that has long since passed. For that reason, it is unlikely Sting in the Tail will make much noise on the charts, but for longtime fans, this will be the goodbye they have always craved. For those new to Scorpions, I highly recommend giving Love at First Sting a play through first, but Sting in the Tail is a worthy competitor.

Greatest Hits ReviewGary Allan is one of those rare artists who has gained commercial AND critical success, yet continues to be snubbed at the awards shows. His previous album, TOUGH ALL OVER (written and recorded shortly after his wife's suicide) was one of the most emotional, powerful albums ever released--in any genre. He has continuously released high-quality music; no cookie-cutter country for this California boy. He's one of the most recognizable singers currently in the genre; he's an impressive songwriter (although he doesn't write much); his guitar chops are to be reckoned with (see him live if you doubt it).
So basically, it's about damn time he released a "greatest hits." And great they are. From modern classics such as "Smoke Rings in the Dark" and "Life Ain't Always Beautiful," to the rockers "Right Where I Need to Be" and "Man of Me," to the tenderness of "Tough Little Boys" and "Her Man"...Gary Allan can do it all. The new songs fit right in here--"A Feelin' Like That" is a rollickin' number about getting over a loved one (or failing to do so); "As The Crow Flies" is simply a great rocker ("like a blackbird, baby, you were born with wings") that fits Allan's voice and style to a "T".
GREATEST HITS is possibly the best Gary Allan record to date, as it collects some of his absolute best material together in one package. I still highly reccommend you go out and purchase his individual albums, though--Allan has been crafting powerful, engaging country/rock/honky-tonk since the mid-nineties. Because of that, GREATEST HITS is more than a sum of its parts--it is a great country record, easily one of the best to be released this year.Greatest Hits Overview

Serendipity is one of my favorite movies - yes, sappy and syrupy - but hey, it hit the spot. And here's a complete list of songs for those of you die-hard fans (like myself) who try to put together a REAL soundtrack:

Okay, hope that helps. One more little tip for you wanting the instrumental score by Alan Silvestri (i.e., When Jonathan is reading his obituary, etc.) ... The best you're going to get (I think) is doing what I did ... hook up a CD recorder to your DVD player (or VHS) and record it directly off the DVD/VHS. This way, you'll not only have the music but you may have some audio clips of dialogue too. It's fun!
Trailer Music: All instrumental music ... don't know where it's from (it may be all Alan Silvestri's) ... the only "real" song in the trailer (at least the one on the DVD) is "Babylon" by David Gray.

My Tribute to Chet Atkins ReviewI was very happy Steve Wariner had done a tribute to Chet. When I got my copy of this wonderful CD and listened to all the tracks, the words, "very happy" seem inaquate. I go back many years loving anything done by Chet. I'm 70yrs old and remember Chet from the early 50's. The first record I bought for my new single play "record player" circa 1953 was a 78rpm of Chet's "I've Got Rhythm" on one side and "Hybrid Corn" on the other. My second was another 78rpm of Chet's "Wildwood Flower" backed with "The Bells of St Mary". I wore out many needles playing those two platers. If you get this CD and you're a fan, you'll be very happy with it. If you're more than a "fan" and you're heart has always been in tune with Chet's, as so many of our hearts have been and always will be, you'll probably tear up some and say, "Thanks Steve, you gave us a treasure". Precious Memories ReviewPrime Cuts: In the Garden, Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus, I'll Fly Away
Following in the footsteps of many country greats such as Randy Travis, Brenda Lee and Merle Haggard, Alan Jackson has added to the venerable canon of country artists singing the great hymns of the church. Unlike many other gospel CDs, "Precious Memories" does not come across as pretentious or spurious. Rather, recorded as a labor of love for his mother as a Christmas gift, Jackson's performance here is indubitably heartfelt. And wrapping his distinctive baritone around all around those vastly familar notes, Jackson gives each of these gospel chesnuts a warm glow brimming with a southern charm. With only a piano, acoustic guitars and organ, simplicity is the order of the day. However, with Keith Stegall's production, there is still that Alan Jackson familarity that has graced his last 10 studio CDs.
A listen to Jackson's spirited version of the poignantly phrased salvific hymn "Are You Washed in the Blood?" brings us directly to church's altar. "Blood" in an almost medley-like fashioned is quickly followed by the southern favorite "I'll Fly Away" boasting an ascendary piano bridge that certain gives flight to this great paean of hope. Though understandability Jackson's penchant for those honky tonk barnburners is missing here, but the more obscure "I Want to Stroll Over Heaven with You" comes closest. Continuing the theme of the blessedness of eternal life, "Heaven" finds a heavenly-minded Jackson reveling in pellucid Saturday night Texas fun.
When Jackson gets more reflective: "Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus" still has that trancendant mesage that still bespeaks truth in today's melee of trials. Affirming the trustworthiness of Jesus in all the tribulations of life, wife Denise and daughters Mattie and Ali join in on "'Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus." Though the Jackson's read of "In the Garden" is straight forward, the simplicity of the tune and the vivid image of walking with Jesus is just heartwarming. While many tend to oversing "How Great Thou Art," Jackson's take is subdued with a sense of awe-inspiring reverance.
Though there are 15 tracks, many of these songs only run for over a minute or so, making this a very listenable CD without being monotaneous. However, this can work as a double-edged sword as the CD only clocks in for a little more than half an hour. Perhaps, the other criticism is that one would like to see Jackson giving some of these songs a more imaginative read. Other than these quibbles, "Precious Memories" is a pleasurable listen. But more important, it is with gratitude that Jackson would record this CD at the height of his career, brining to his fans and others a hopeful message deeply grounded in the Cross of Christ. Albéniz: Echoes of Spain ReviewThere is no better collection of Albeniz on guitar, and no better John Williams recording. Once you have heard his version of 'Granada,' no other recording in the usual key of E will suffice. He actually tuned his 5th string up from A to B -- suicide on your A string! -- to get a more resonate sound in his transcription. Williams's extrovert style works wonders with 'Cordoba' and 'Sevilla' as well. Given this classic mix of an extrovert guitarist and an extrovert composer, the closing rendition of the "Tango is D" is all the more magnificent. Never was Albeniz more reflective; never was Williams more reflective. Arguably the best guitar recording ever dedicated to a single composer, though a series of recent and brilliant recordings by David Russell (of Torroba, Barrios, etc.) make it hard to make such a blanket statement. Anyway: buy this recording!!!!!!!!!

Live at the Bass Performance Hall (W/Dvd) ReviewI once read of Lindsey Buckingham that he was "the thinking man's guitar god." In the years since then, I can say without hesitation that that's a perfect description of him, and this cd/dvd set is further evidence of this.
Featuring songs from his latest album, Under the Skin, this performance captures all the aspects of Buckingham that have made him such a rewarding artist since he burst onto the scene with Fleetwood Mac in the 70s. From soft folky tunes to blues to hard rock to perfect pop melodicism, Buckingham does it all. I just love the song "I Know I'm Not Wrong," so was really happy to see it's here. And his new music is strong enough to sit well alongside such classics as "Go Your Own Way" and "I'm So Afraid." Closing the set with "Shut Us Down" is a really cool idea, as it gives the viewer one last look at the most amazing finger-picking in rock.
The dvd is well shot, though it's not as stylized and slick as Fleetwood Mac Live in Boston (a personal favorite). The sound captures the live show - the occasional off note is not fixed in post production. I love when concert dvds include a cd (though this seems to market itself as a cd that includes a dvd), because I'll view the concert occasionally but will listen to the songs very frequently. In this case, the cd includes every song on the dvd except Tusk - which was a good choice for omission. It's a great song, but the odds are, if you're buying this, you probably already have Tusk in multiple versions.
The bonus documentary shows Buckingham in full reflective mode, verbose as always. Buckingham has been very vocal in recent years describing his feelings about music, his mental and emotional state, and the state of the music industry, and this is a good outlet for him to discuss these issues at length, while showing some cool footage of him recording songs for Under the Skin. It's not just a slapped-together bonus, in other words. It's a nice addition to the set.
But the main feature is certainly the concert itself. Having caught Lindsey on this tour, I can vouch for the authenticity of what you're seeing in this concert. This is the kind of heartfelt and awe inspiring performance he gives every night. Truly amazing.

Songs for Dustmites ReviewThe origins of Steve Burns' "Songs for Dustmites" is the stuff of future rock legend, which turned him overnight from the star of kiddie show "Blues Clues" to a respected indie-rock musician. His spacey-rock debut is one of those albums that won't be noticed by critics, but will be appreciated by music-lovers.
It starts off with the elusively melodic "Mighty Little Man," which explodes into a fuzzy bassline and an orchestral display of sound -- and that's only the first few seconds. That sound continues in the even more epic trumpet and cello of "Stick Around," and the waveringly acoustic splendor of "What I Do on Saturday."
Oh wait, what was the story of Burns' sudden reinvention? Simply put, Burns was at a party when someone spun the Flaming Lips masterpiece "The Soft Bulletin." He immediately left, bought the album, and began working on his own music, leaving behind blue dogs and dancing with kitchen utensils. And in a display of good-music karma, he got Flaming Lips' Steven Drozd and Michael Ivins in on the work.
The result is melodic yet fragmented rock music, the sort of larger-than-life stuff that appeals to the grown-ups that have a kid inside them. Burns creates sweeping orchestral epics and weaves them in with bassy rock), and overlays wavering keyboards over acoustic guitar. There's a slightly folksy bent to the songs, as if folk were played on a spaceship.
Burns' gentle croon is pleasant to listen to; he blossoms especially in "Mighty Little Man," where his voice echoes majestically over the orchestral bass. That seems to be in keeping with the theme of the song, about an ordinary man becoming a hero ("Nobody else is stronger than I am/Yesterday I moved a mountain"). That theme continues in songs like "Henry Krinkle's Lament," but in between those Burns bares his soul, sings about angels without wings, and battling gravity.
Forget Blues Clues -- there isn't a trace of goofy juvenility in this album. "Songs for Dustmites" is a solid debut, transforming Steve Burns into a mighty little man. A fun album that hints at possible future greatness.Songs for Dustmites Overview
