Lilo & Stitch ReviewI love this sountrack! I guess it helps that Lilo and Stitch is my favorite movie, but this soundtrack is definitely a winner.
This thing is packed with Elvis hits from start to finish, and all of us old folk will be moving our hips again to these old tunes that were still pretty popular when we were young. It's nice to see the King resurrected once again for an amazing movie.
Then there's two Hawaiian songs which are simply beautiful, very happy and very traditional in feel. The sountrack opens with Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride which is very fun, used at the beginning of the film, and later we hear He Mele No Lilo which is the one they played while surfing later in the show. There's a version of Can't Help Falling In Love by A-Teens, which is pretty good, and Burning Love by Wynona, which is spectacular! And if you saw the movie you'll notice that this song has Stitch on guitar at the ending, it's worth a smile to think about that scene while listening to this song.
I've said it in another review of the movie, that Stitch is my fav Disney character, and the fact that in the movie Stitch played some of these songs (with the help of Lilo), makes the whole thing more enjoyable.
The last three tracks are score from the movie. Not as exciting as what came before it, but I guess it's necessary to include them. It is fun though to listen and try and pick out the parts from the movie that they came from, Stitch to the rescue is of course from the part where Lilo is kidnapped by Gantu, forcing Stitch and Jumba to fly after him in their own spaceship, as stitch tries to rescue Lilo.
Very good fun. There's only one problem...this sountrack doesn't include Nani singing "Aloha 'Oe"! How sad! I was really looking forward to hearing that song again, as that part of the movie had me in tears, yes, tears. And lot's of them. Why they didn't inlcude it here is beyond me. So I take 1/2 a point off for that and give this sountrack 4 1/2 stars. Still very good though, be sure to buy it.Lilo & Stitch Overview

Classical Kids: Collection ReviewWe've had the CDs in this boxed set for over a year now. The Classical Kids series has been wonderful. We have two boys (now 6 and 8) and this has been a great introduction to classical music. At first, the kids loved the stories which provide a sense of history and place and, ultimately, keep the kids interested in the entire CD. As they listened (time and time again), they started to pay more attention to the musical portions. Recently, we've been able to tell that they've picked up a sense of the music as we've listed to classical music on the car radio. Time and again, they perk up when listening to a piece of music and surprise us by saying "That's Beethoven". Sure enough - they've picked up something about the style of music that's characteristic of Beethoven. Sometimes it's the snippet of music from the CD and other times it's just the rhythms that are characteristic of that piece. As a family, we all recommend this.Classical Kids: Collection Overview

Baby's First Songs From Around the World ReviewThis is another winner in the Baby's First Series. It's a terrific combination of songs and beats from around the world. It's an especially cool CD for quiet time activities. My kids (4 and 2) and my students (5th graders) love this CD. Don't let the "Baby" in the title keep you away from this series. It is terrific music and SO AFFORDABLE! The price is unbelievable for what you get. I've sent many CDs in the series to friend with kids of all ages. The Guitar and Fairy Tales CDs are especially well done and enthusiastically received by moms and dads and kids alike!Baby's First Songs From Around the World Overview

Lullabies and Dances ReviewI heard two cuts from this album today on the radio, and raced home to look up whose voice was behind these incredible songs. Julianne Baird has a hauntingly beautiful voice, very soothing and relaxing. Songs for Dustmites ReviewThe origins of Steve Burns' "Songs for Dustmites" is the stuff of future rock legend, which turned him overnight from the star of kiddie show "Blues Clues" to a respected indie-rock musician. His spacey-rock debut is one of those albums that won't be noticed by critics, but will be appreciated by music-lovers.
It starts off with the elusively melodic "Mighty Little Man," which explodes into a fuzzy bassline and an orchestral display of sound -- and that's only the first few seconds. That sound continues in the even more epic trumpet and cello of "Stick Around," and the waveringly acoustic splendor of "What I Do on Saturday."
Oh wait, what was the story of Burns' sudden reinvention? Simply put, Burns was at a party when someone spun the Flaming Lips masterpiece "The Soft Bulletin." He immediately left, bought the album, and began working on his own music, leaving behind blue dogs and dancing with kitchen utensils. And in a display of good-music karma, he got Flaming Lips' Steven Drozd and Michael Ivins in on the work.
The result is melodic yet fragmented rock music, the sort of larger-than-life stuff that appeals to the grown-ups that have a kid inside them. Burns creates sweeping orchestral epics and weaves them in with bassy rock), and overlays wavering keyboards over acoustic guitar. There's a slightly folksy bent to the songs, as if folk were played on a spaceship.
Burns' gentle croon is pleasant to listen to; he blossoms especially in "Mighty Little Man," where his voice echoes majestically over the orchestral bass. That seems to be in keeping with the theme of the song, about an ordinary man becoming a hero ("Nobody else is stronger than I am/Yesterday I moved a mountain"). That theme continues in songs like "Henry Krinkle's Lament," but in between those Burns bares his soul, sings about angels without wings, and battling gravity.
Forget Blues Clues -- there isn't a trace of goofy juvenility in this album. "Songs for Dustmites" is a solid debut, transforming Steve Burns into a mighty little man. A fun album that hints at possible future greatness.Songs for Dustmites Overview

Peter, Paul And Mommy ReviewI've been singing for children since I was a teenager in the late 1960s, when I began entertaining my nieces and nephews at family gatherings. Many of the songs on this album became a standard part of my repertoire, not only with the family, but as I eventually became a music teacher and also in my involvement in many camps, and now as a school librarian. At the drop of a hat you can still get me to pull out my guitar and sing "The Marvleous Toy," "Goin' to the Zoo," "The Boa Constrictor" and my favorite, "Puff, the Magic Dragon." (Incidentally, most people don't know that "Puff," was inspired by "Custard the Dragon," a silly poem for kids written by Ogden Nash. It was written years before Peter Yarrow knew what marijuana was. I often introduce the poem before singing the song in my library.)
This album captures the intimacy and simplicity of folk music at its best. It sounds as good today as the day it was recorded. Some recordings are timeless, and this is one of them.

Songs in French for Children ReviewThis album was to my Mother Goose years (early 50's) what The Beatles'"Sergeant Pepper" was to the sixties: a landmark. It was produced by Columbia Records for the US Market and used an unlikely quintet: Les Quatre Barbus, a group of four existentialist-type bearded lads who opened for the likes of Boris Vian and Juliette Greco in the heady days of the St-Germain-des-Pres chansonniers, and Lucienne Vernay, a soft-spoken, smoky-voiced chanteuse. The result was dynamite and the songs used were very eclectic. There is one song by surrealist cult-figure Robert Desnos (absurdist but childlike, music by Joseph Kosma) and one song by perennial bohemian Georges Brassens (absurdist and cynical, but it is about the death of a female duck so it does qualify as a children's song). There are two translated American songs (Three Little Pigs and Old MacDonald Had a Farm). All the other songs are a mixture of French folklore and contemporary writing. The only major children's masterpiece of the era that is missing from the collection is "Une chanson douce" by Henri Salvador, but that's another story and he is also represented on this collection... The interpretation is fresh, the songs being handled by Lucienne alone when they are sentimental, Lucienne and the boys when they are folkloric and the boys alone when they are rowdy. What makes this album such a success is the imagination displayed in the production, recording techniques and orchestrations. There is always something mysterious, unexpected or simply wonderful going on in the background to make the stories engaging and the songs are not only sung, they are acted with the greatest of skill. It is a delight to hear those songs over and over again and they grow in profundity, significance and polish as you grow older (and you compare them to the usual caca that passes for children's entertainment these days). I will never know what American children of the 50's made of these songs (there was no English lyrics sheet enclosed, only liner notes) but I do know that as a French-speaking child in pre-Quiet Revolution Quebec, growing up in a sea of English at the time, it was a blessing. Not for Kids Only ReviewThis is a favorite with every kid I know. But what do kids know? They listen to Raffi. *
From an adult perspective, this tape is amazing. The playing is superb and intelligent, the lyrics are sincere, heartfelt, and often pull-your-leg funny. Grisman and Garcia play with and off each other beautifully.
The musical skill here is extremely high, but feels unforced and simple.
For example, listen to the song "Arkansas Traveller" about an encounter between a city slicker and a country bumpkin:
Slicker: Well, hello stranger.
Bumpkin: Why, hello stranger!
Slicker: Yer corn looks awful little and yeller.
Bumpkin: I planted the little and yeller kind.
[cue duet]
Listen to the banjo and mandolin duet of turkey in the straw; the playing is quite intricate and beautiful.
What's right about this tape: it entertains and engages without once stooping to dull playing or insincere, tired singing. Unlike Raffi, for example, this tape never feels like an act.
Recommended for any kid. Also, any adult who likes good acoustic or folk guitar. This is a tape I play all the time, whether or not kids are around.
