Beethoven's Wig: Sing Along Symphonies ReviewI am a 33 year old woman who has been a classical music lover for virtually my entire life. I found 'Beethoven's Wig' quite by accident while browsing on Amazon, and after listening to the snippets provided, I was laughing so hard that I knew I had to buy it. What a wonderful way to get young children interested in music! And of course, it's not only for children. I actually bought this as a present for my mother, who has been a classical music lover HER whole life (and who would [be so upset] if I revealed her age), and she was tickled pink by it!
It's actually an old tradition to mate "fun" lyrics to classical music in order to make the music easy to learn. My mother tells me how she learned 'Morning' from the 'Peer Gynt Suite' as 'Morning is dawning/And Peer Gynt is yawning/Under a statue of Grieg', and I myself know two crazy versions of the 'Soldier's Chorus' from 'Faust'. Richard Perlmutter here is a worthy successor to this tradition. Here he makes up wonderful lyrics for 11 well-known classical pieces. These lyrics are wildly imaginative, hilarious, and clearly well thought-out. Many of the tracks include musicological or biographical details about the composers involved.
The absolute highlight is the 'Pizzicato' from Delibes' 'Sylvia', where Sylvia leaves the faucet 'drip, drip, dripping' and tons of havoc in her wake. Perlmutter even manages to weave in an ad for a plumber here! His version of Offenbach's 'Can-Can' is tons of fun and will no doubt start you dancing, and in 'Just for Elise', her piece is stolen by Maurice from Greece in his valise and they call the police and go to the Justice of the Peace. The title track brings out the 'bigness' of Beethoven's Fifth, if not it's seriousness, and the disc ends explosively with Tchaikovsky's cannonball blowing up the concert hall. ('That was the beginning of POP music!')
Most importantly, after all the "Silly Symphonies" are done, each musical excerpt is played straight, so the listener knows what it really sounds like in concert (or can sing along themselves if they wish).
The booklet is delightful as well. Not only is it filled with whimsical illustrations (especially the cover with Beethoven's ever-expanding wig), but also suggests musically related activities for children (such as finding a picture of each composer, comparing the composers with modern musicians, etc). It also has "quizzes" at the bottom of each page about the composers, and even I didn't know some of the answers! (Offenbach hired a famous American composer to play violin in his orchestra. Who was it? John Phillip Sousa!)
Like many other music lovers, including some who have reviewed this disc, I am also very worried about the "dumbing down" of classical music in order to make it more popular and, of course, to make the record companies lots of money. I am delighted to report that this is nothing of the sort. For one thing, Perlmutter's lyrics are simply too sophisticated and intelligent, to the point where they might help kids with English and writing skills. Not only that, they teach good musical lessons about the virtue of practice ('Hey, Guitar Teacher'/Bach's 'Bouree') and families making music together ('Harmony'/Schumann's 'Merry Peasant'). Not to mention that the Perlmutter's version of Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody #2 lists just about every major composer who ever existed. And how many 'dumbed down' versions of classical music help listeners learn the kings and queens of England?
I do, however, have two reservations on the 'popularization' front which are enough to make me take off the fifth star. One is that the pronounciations of the composers' names is consistently 'American', and thus usually incorrect, i.e Wolfgang pronounced with a W instead of a V, Schu-MUHN for Schu-MAHN, BOTCH-erini instead of BACH-erini, and the most galling, VUR-di instead of VEHR-di. Still, the disc will get children interested enough in classical music to eagerly learn the correct pronounciations later, and I know plenty of serious music lovers who get them wrong. My other slight reservation is the total time of the disc is only 34:50. I realize that many young children won't have the attention span for a longer CD, but it would have been nice such a short disc were budget price, .... Despite these qualms, I think that buyers with children under 6 or 7 will be happy to add the fifth star back.
Of course, 'Beethoven's Wig' presents ONLY the fun, lighthearted side of classical music, and not its seriousness or magnificence. However, I've always thought that humor and fun were some of the best tools for learning ANYTHING; laughter is a great memory aid. There were actually one or two pieces on this disc which I didn't know all that well, and now I'll never forget them. I think the appreciation for depth and grandeur WILL come, especially for children whose parents are music buffs. Classical Kids: Collection ReviewWe've had the CDs in this boxed set for over a year now. The Classical Kids series has been wonderful. We have two boys (now 6 and 8) and this has been a great introduction to classical music. At first, the kids loved the stories which provide a sense of history and place and, ultimately, keep the kids interested in the entire CD. As they listened (time and time again), they started to pay more attention to the musical portions. Recently, we've been able to tell that they've picked up a sense of the music as we've listed to classical music on the car radio. Time and again, they perk up when listening to a piece of music and surprise us by saying "That's Beethoven". Sure enough - they've picked up something about the style of music that's characteristic of Beethoven. Sometimes it's the snippet of music from the CD and other times it's just the rhythms that are characteristic of that piece. As a family, we all recommend this.Classical Kids: Collection Overview

SpongeBob Squarepants: Original Theme Highlights ReviewSpongeBob is the greatest Sponge around! His show is hilarious and contains some great hilarious tunes. Unfortunately, only 7 of the many SpongeBob tunes have made it to this cd. My Favorites include:
"SpongeBob Square Pants Theme"
"Loop de Loop"
"Ripped Pants"
"SpongeBob Scaredy Pants"
I like the theme simply because I think it's a cool theme song. "Loop de Loop" helps explain how to tie one's shoes. "Ripped Pants" is a great parody throwback to the surfer tunes of the 1950s and "SpongeBob Scaredy Pants" is just another cool song. A lot of people don't like "Pre-Hibernation". The song reminds me of something off of Space Ghost Coast to Coast and feels like a crazy song Brak would sing from that show. Considering SpongeBob has the same type of humor, it doesn't seem all that out of place. You Are My Little Bird ReviewMy family and I LOVE Elizabeth Mitchell... in a big way. So when I say that this new CD is my favorite, it's not something I say lightly. But it's true - and it's not just my new favorite Elizabeth Mitchell CD - it's my favorite CD period. Why? It's just fantastic. The songs are beautiful, simple, nostalgic, fun, full of character, love, warmth and magic. It's Elizabeth Mitchell at her best - with just her voice and guitar and husband and child accompanying her. Simple and perfect.
And our kids love it, too. My daughter (aged almost 3) has had a special love for Elizabeth Mitchell ever since she was 2 months old (when we first heard of Elizabeth Mitchell). Ms. Mitchell's beautiful, soothing voice and captivating melodies has always put my daughter into a kind of hypnotic trance.... and this CD is no exception. Our son (nearly 1.5 years old) really loves this new one, too. His reaction, however, is to hop up and down vigourously (his version of dancing).
And the best thing of all is not that just this CD will calm and relax the kids, or entertain them, but us parents love it, too. The songs are either old favorites (like the Velvet Underground's "What Goes On") or familiar ("Little Liza Jane" and "Peace Like a River") or new ones (to us) that are catchy enough to learn and sing along. But the songs are never corny or hokey like so many other children's CD's are these days. This is real music that will become a treasured part of your family.
I can't recommend this CD (or Elizabeth Mitchell - and Dan Littleton and Storey) highly enough. Everyone should go buy it immediately - unless you know me personally, in which case you'll be getting it from me as a gift!!!

La Voix en Rose ReviewOur 2 year old loves this CD! She constantly asks us to play it. She has already learned the words to many songs and sings them all day long. The French is easy to understand for kids and adults. I especially like having the English translations to all of the songs in the amazing songbook that comes with the CD. a long, long time ago, I was wandering around one of those bricks and mortar bookstores. I usually pay little attention to the ambient muzak - but hark! Is that Seven Dwarf music I hear? I listened. I strode over to the music section. "What is this delightful music I hear? I must have it!" And so I did, and so should you!
In the accompanying lesson booklet, Shirley Fleming asks: "What accounts for that elusive thing called style? What makes one composer's music different from another's? ... The music `paraphrased' here covers three centuries and close to a dozen countries. It gives us a bird's-eye view of a very wide range of musical personalities, and - as you will hear - each has his own distinctive voice."
The composer/arranger/conductor of this wonderful CD, Donald Fraser, says: "This collection brings together two magical worlds: the world of Disney and the world of classical music. The album fulfills a wish I've held for some 15 years - to help introduce today's audiences to classical music via some of the most familiar and beloved melodies in movie history."
Educational factor aside, this CD is just plain fun! The arrangements are rich and lush. My favorite is Heigh-Ho a la Mozart. Picture the Seven Dwarfs marching off to their daily toil in the mines as you listen to this on your morning commute! The Second Star to the Right chorale reminds me of the St. Olaf Choir when they're going fine! There's a Joplin-esque "Under the Sea" and a stirring "Can you Feel the Love Tonight" a la Tchaikovsky ( no 1812 canons, but some buildups come close!- Elton never did it this way!) and a spritely "Winnie the Pooh."

It's an especially cool CD for quiet time activities. My kids (4 and 2) and my students (5th graders) love this CD. Don't let the "Baby" in the title keep you away from this series. This is simply an excellent classical guitar CD. The atmospheric recording is superb, with a beautiful guitar tone. The pieces are all lovely and, yes, relaxing (in common with most classical guitar music). Songs in French for Children ReviewThis album was to my Mother Goose years (early 50's) what The Beatles'"Sergeant Pepper" was to the sixties: a landmark. It was produced by Columbia Records for the US Market and used an unlikely quintet: Les Quatre Barbus, a group of four existentialist-type bearded lads who opened for the likes of Boris Vian and Juliette Greco in the heady days of the St-Germain-des-Pres chansonniers, and Lucienne Vernay, a soft-spoken, smoky-voiced chanteuse. The result was dynamite and the songs used were very eclectic. There is one song by surrealist cult-figure Robert Desnos (absurdist but childlike, music by Joseph Kosma) and one song by perennial bohemian Georges Brassens (absurdist and cynical, but it is about the death of a female duck so it does qualify as a children's song). There are two translated American songs (Three Little Pigs and Old MacDonald Had a Farm). All the other songs are a mixture of French folklore and contemporary writing. The only major children's masterpiece of the era that is missing from the collection is "Une chanson douce" by Henri Salvador, but that's another story and he is also represented on this collection... The interpretation is fresh, the songs being handled by Lucienne alone when they are sentimental, Lucienne and the boys when they are folkloric and the boys alone when they are rowdy. What makes this album such a success is the imagination displayed in the production, recording techniques and orchestrations. There is always something mysterious, unexpected or simply wonderful going on in the background to make the stories engaging and the songs are not only sung, they are acted with the greatest of skill. It is a delight to hear those songs over and over again and they grow in profundity, significance and polish as you grow older (and you compare them to the usual caca that passes for children's entertainment these days). I will never know what American children of the 50's made of these songs (there was no English lyrics sheet enclosed, only liner notes) but I do know that as a French-speaking child in pre-Quiet Revolution Quebec, growing up in a sea of English at the time, it was a blessing. Not for Kids Only ReviewThis is a favorite with every kid I know. But what do kids know? They listen to Raffi. *
From an adult perspective, this tape is amazing. The playing is superb and intelligent, the lyrics are sincere, heartfelt, and often pull-your-leg funny. Grisman and Garcia play with and off each other beautifully.
The musical skill here is extremely high, but feels unforced and simple.
For example, listen to the song "Arkansas Traveller" about an encounter between a city slicker and a country bumpkin:
Slicker: Well, hello stranger.
Bumpkin: Why, hello stranger!
Slicker: Yer corn looks awful little and yeller.
Bumpkin: I planted the little and yeller kind.
[cue duet]
Listen to the banjo and mandolin duet of turkey in the straw; the playing is quite intricate and beautiful.
What's right about this tape: it entertains and engages without once stooping to dull playing or insincere, tired singing. Unlike Raffi, for example, this tape never feels like an act.
Recommended for any kid. Also, any adult who likes good acoustic or folk guitar. This is a tape I play all the time, whether or not kids are around.

Sing Over Me: Worship Songs & Lullabies ReviewI happened to pick this up the other day and was just so pleased with the sweet tone to this worship compilation. My commute to and from work can be so stressful, but this cd soothes my soul. I love it...I do not have children, but if I did, it would be their bedtime listening! There is so much to say, so let me just tackle each song.
1. How Great is Our God. -- Bethany Dillon really hits one out of the park here. I love Chris Tomlin's version, but I love that Bethany brought this song out of the rafters for the female worshippers. It's absolutely gorgeous! She really kicks off the album with a mellow, yet magnificent track.
2. Light of the World -- Erin O'Donnell's voice is perfect for this track. She just sings it, no trills, runs, over indulgent vocal stuff, just sings from her heart. I can almost see her holding her own child and rocking them to sleep.
3. You are Good -- Nichole Nordeman (wrong listing above) really has an outstanding new song here. The words of this song are so amazing. She just reminds us that no matter what, God is Good, good and bad times, He is good. Musically, it is a gem. Mooderate tempo, but definately a truly excellent track!
4. May The Words of My Mouth -- Christy Nockels is the real reason I bought this cd. And does she ever pour her heart out vocally here. This song is so simple, and just sweet. Only Christy Nockels can take a song in this range and not over-sing the high notes, but just alight on them like a butterfly on a flower. This is one of my absolute favorite tracks, and one that takes me into a special worship moment with the Lord. I love Christy's light vocal, and it seems to be a little overtaken when Janna Long steps up the backing vocal, however, it is still a wonderful song!
5. How Deep the Father's Love for Us - Nichole Nordeman takes an old Hymn and redoes it with her own style. I love Nichole's ability to sing like she were whispering in the ear of Christ. And with this song, her vocal is so transparent and real as if she is discovering the truths of the song herself. Masterfully done.
6. Sing Over Me -- Jennifer Knapp (again, wrong listing above)sings a new song that is beautiful. Nichole N's backing Vocals are the perfect addition! This song has a really catchy hook that keeps me singing all day long. And what a neat idea to sing a song of God singing over us! I love love love this track!
7. Whole World In His Hands -- Christy Nockels takes this eeriely magnificent song and crafts a confident track. It remains gentle and soothing. Beginning in a minor key really sets this song apart from the rest on the album, and really takes you to a different place musically than the other tracks
8. Hold On To Jesus -- Erin O'Donnell takes an earlier single of her own and strips it down vocally, and allows a new element of piano accomp. to be added. It is a beautiful lullaby, just perfect for a good night reminder of little ones. I'm sure someone is going to use this one for baby dedications or videos.
9. We Fall Down - Nichole Nordeman doesn't do anything new or spectacular with this song, but just sings it. Sometimes, It is just so important to sing a song from your heart, and Nichole does it. Again, like Bethany, she brings down the key to a singable one for females, so that is a bonus for singing along.
10. Lord, You Have My Heart -- Janna Long (again, wrong listing, what is up with that Amazon?) sings this little song. Generally I really like Janna's work, but this is easily my least favorite track. Not b/c of the talent of Mrs. Long, but because her voice on this song doesn't really match the rest of the cd. The other ladies performing have very gentle, soothing interpretations of their songs, even the more upbeat tracks. This song, however slow it is, allows Janna to let her big voice go a little too much. I wish the producer had pushed Janna to a softer tone...it would have fit much better. It is still a good track, and one of my fav worship songs, but for this cd, it's a little out of place.
11. Unwavering -- Bethany Dillon....Of the "new" songs...this is absolutely my favorite. I'm suggesting it for use in my women's & single's worship ministries. Outstanding, Incredible, Biblical Lyrics....and the music is sweet and easy on the ears. Loved it. My second fav on the cd.
12.Jesus Loves Me -- Christy Nockels takes on a classic and makes it her own. Pitched in only a key Christy can sing so sweetly, it is a perfect lullaby, and soothing worship song.
I highly reccomend this cd for nursery's, schools, homes, women's ministry, etc. It's fantastic!
