Angels of Love ReviewYngwie has been a household name for years when it comes to anything related to guitars. His earlier works such as Rising Force or Trilogy have become classics and are considered by many to be the definitive of musicianship and guitar artistry. If you are one of those people then you might as well not read any of the reviews including my own, as this album will please you. Any others whom maybe skeptical please continue reading.
This album as you should and probably already do know is predominantly acoustic. Which means if you are a fan of Yngwie's earlier riffing and faster paced Metallic sound then there is a 50/50 chance this album might be a bit of a disappointment. Now don't think this isn't an amazing album because it is honestly one of the best acoustic albums I have heard. There are electric guitar pieces but they are sparse and more a part of the background to help create a dynamic contrast to the acoustic guitars, rather then the rip roaring leads Yngwie is better known for.
The all around pace of the album is slow and at times has a haunting ambiance untouched by fellow guitar legends. There is quite a bit of orchestral/keyboard work in the background giving the songs more structure rather then just having the guitars alone, this I am thankful for. I love good guitar playing, but I enjoy it more when it is accented by some kind of backdrop. Being a long time fan of Malmsteen and his various works I can honestly say this is one of my favorite releases by him in some time.
I highly recommend this album to all of the Malmsteen fan base, but as I noted be cautious as fans of the Metal side of his music may be put off. Furthermore fans of acoustic and guitar playing in general will be impressed by his skills on this release and should also be able to appreciate this. However new fans should look into his earlier releases before delving into Angels Of Love, start with anything from the 80's and make your way towards his more recent releases. All in all and giving my honest and completely unbiased opinion; This album ranks up there with his earlier works as far as overall musicianship goes.

Rising Force ReviewIt's always hard for me to read reviews of Yngwie Malmsteen's albums, because they always tend to fall into two categories: first, the aspiring guitar players who put more emphasis on Malmsteen's skill with his instrument than his actual music and whose sense of hero worship for Malmsteen leads them to venerate his recordings based purely on the speed of his soling ("if you like REAL guitar playing, check this out!"); and second, the pretentious would-be music journalists who feel compelled to dismiss anything he does based purely on the fact that he's Yngwie Malmsteen ("he plays with no feel, it's all just mindless speed and fireworks," etc.) Neither perception of Malmsteen's work is very accurate, and both are wrong for the simple reason that there was much more to Malmsteen's early work than mere guitar pyrotechnics and flashy speed-of-light arpeggiated solos -- a fact that his worshippers don't seem to care about and that his detractors refuse to acknowledge.
Malmsteen does, in fact, play with a good deal of feel and emotion on this album. His love and enthusiasm for making music show through in everything he plays here. And of course, at this point in his career, Malmsteen was still a guitar virtuoso of the highest order. Even though Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore had been the first heavy metal guitarist to incorporate classical scales into a hard rock style, and Ozzy Osbourne's late right-hand man Randy Rhoads had perfected what would come to be known as the neoclassical style of heavy metal guitar, Malmsteen built on their work, creating a fully-formed and innovative style. Make no mistake about it: Yngwie Malmsteen is an exceptionally talented guitarist, and this album was one of the last moments where he actually demonstrated it.
But what both Malmsteen's fans and his critics fail to realize is that there's a lot more to look at in his music than just instrumental prowess. "Rising Force" is made up of genuinely good songs. "Black Star" is one of the all-time great rock instrumentals; it's one of the few Malmsteen instrumental composition that's actually built around a signature riff and contains a distinguishable solo (and what a solo it is!), rather than the entire song being the solo. The same can be said for "Evil Eye" and "Little Savage." "Far Beyond the Sun" and "Icarus' Dream Suite," by contrast, feature Malmsteen using a technique that Joe Satriani would often employ: namely, letting his guitar take on the role of "lead vocalist."
The real lead vocalist of Malmsteen's band, however, was a talented young self-taught singer named Jeff Scott Soto. Soto is one of the finest vocalists in all of rock music, but on this album he rarely gets a chance to show it. His vocals are only featured on two tracks, neither of which lets him show what he's capable of. "Now Your Ships Are Burned" makes terrible use of his amazing range, and "As Above, So Below" only hints at the feats of vocal brilliance he would achieve on Malmsteen's second album, "Marching Out." As it is, Soto manages to hold his own on this record and sound convincing, even while singing Malmsteen's sub-par lyrics.
Both "Rising Force" and its follow-up, "Marching Out," see Yngwie Malmsteen in rare form, as his amazing instrumental talent is actually matched by the music he uses it to create. It's just a shame that most people -- including those who actually like Malmsteen's style of playing -- don't allow for him to do anything musically interesting, which is what he was most certainly doing on this album.Rising Force Overview

Chamber Metal: Neo-Classical Metal Guitar ReviewThis compilation disc is neither great nor horrible. You may feel the same way about this cd as you would to a dance or dream club compilation cd in that you will like some songs while others are just "Ok" or "Blah".
Later on some neat effects are used in the percussion area of some tracks. And, though hearing Vivaldi's (Summer) Presto on the electric guitar is fun at first, I still prefer it performed on a violin. The tracks by -Paste- are good driving songs and occasionally remind me of Therion. As is brought out in other reviews the music here isn't all that original, but good every once in a while.
So, if you have any loose change lying around...

Concerto Suite for Electric Guitar ReviewThis recording is a landmark for Yngwie and for electric guitar. I say it is a landmark because very few electric guitarists have actually composed and recorded a concerto for their instrument. Fewer still have performed their work with a world class philharmonic. I hope to see more like this from Yngwie and from other electric guitarists as it will advance the young instrument further beyond mere pop-culture music.
My only gripe (a minor one)about this recording is that Yngwie (as usual) overplays at points. There is an extended acoustic solo (which by Yngwie's own admission is improvised) that borders on obvious "wanking." Such is inappropriate for this kind of music. Improvising is great as long as it doesn't sound like mere improvising - especially in this context.
Yngwie said in an interview that he had problems with the mix recording this live so he had to punch the guitar track in. This is too bad since it makes live performances of his piece less likely. He probably was too loud. I saw him last year after waiting for years to see him and was extremely dissappointed by his volume which was so lound and piercing, it hurt - and I could not wait to leave. What made it more dissappointing was that his playing was really good that night.
Anyone who likes this should love Uli Roth's "Prologue to Symphonic Legends." Uli is a major influence on Yngwie and has even more depth. If Yngwie would use a guitar like Uli's extended range Sky guitar, his classical performances would be even better.
All in all I would highly recommend this to guitar fans. This is probably the finest work from one of the world's top guitarists.Concerto Suite for Electric Guitar Overview
