Surfing With the Alien ReviewI challenge anyone to release a more accessible instrumental rock album than Joe Satriani's "Surfing With the Alien." I don't play guitar myself, but that is hardly an impediment to enjoying his music...and that's probably the best thing about Joe -- you don't need to be a musician yourself to love his songs.
Surfing With the Alien was Joe's first successful record, and after listening to it just once you'll understand why. Joe eschews needless self-indulgence like most 'guitar heroes' and just plays rocking songs with interesting melodies. My favorite songs are "Crushing Day" -- an exhilarating song with mind-bending solos and some good hooks -- and "Echo" -- a great track that flows naturally and beautifully. Every other song here is excellent, from the epic and orchestral-sounding "Hill of the Skull" to the pretty ballad "Always With Me; Always With You."
I highly recommend this album to guitar players and rock fans alike.Surfing With the Alien Overview

Electric Joe Satriani: An Anthology Review...thus the sad tale that goes with any sort of anthology or "greatest hits" album. If you're looking to get into Joe for the first time, start here. The samples pulled from each of his studio albums is quite good and adequately represent each studio work. The older tracks are indeed remastered here. Joe is my favorite instrumentalist by far, and yet I have a couple of things to say about "Anthology" that are probably not too kind:
1) You're getting basically anything worth having from "Flying in a Blue Dream" (except for maybe "Bells of Lol"), so don't worry about buying it later. It's actually kind of a cheesy album.
2) I was a bit upset that "Circles" from the Surfing with the Alien album didn't make the cut. Joe always plays this one live, and it's one of the high-points of Surfing with the Alien. The other cuts represented from this album are all excellent.
3) The only cut from "Time Machine" is the title track, and yet it's a double-disc set (lots of live & weird studio experimental material). I would have liked to see "All Alone" on the anthology--which I think is Joe's best cut on Time Machine. "The Mighty Turtle Head" is also a great track that didn't make the cut.
4) Joe's 1995 self-titled release only got 2 cuts on Anthology -- "Cool #9" (one of Joe's favorite live openers) and "Down, Down, Down." I don't understand the presence of the latter on this compilation, when songs like "Home," "(You're) My World," and "If" get more radio air time and more attention in guitar magazines and the like. "Down, Down, Down" actually stands out on the 1995 release like a sore thumb; the rest of the album represents a rock-blues fusion thing. This is a very underrepresented album on Anthology.
5) Some great tracks were missing from "Extremist" like "Rubina's Blue Sky Happiness" and "Tears in the Rain." If you were to buy Extremist in addition to Anthology you won't feel robbed because of the overlap (same with Crystal Planet). Granted, few people ever say that "New Blues" is one of their favorite Joe tracks (it's one of my favorites), so you won't expect it in Anthology, but it is worth having, as is the whole album itself.
6) Engines of Creation got just the amount of attention it deserves (it's a weird step for Joe). "Until We Say Goodbye" is probably the only track worth having on the whole album, and it is represented here.
7) "Rubina" and "Not of this Earth" are the only two tracks that amount to anything from Joe's long-ago released "Not of this Earth" album. Good choice here (although I question why they're placed on the CD last).
8) Crystal Planet is almost over-represented, and I'm a bit sad that "House Full of Bullets" and "Up in the Sky" were not here over and against "Ceremony" and "Love Thing." "Raspberry Jam Delta-V" (a phrase used by fighter pilots to describe the effect of intense G-force on the body) and the title track are the high-points of the album, but you'd do yourself well to pick this one up on the side, even though it's somewhat overrepresented here. Again, you won't feel robbed by doing so, as I Crystal Planet, in my opinion, represents Joe's most mature work to date.
All in all, if you're an old Joe fan who wishes to convert cassette tapes to CD, start here. As I said before, you're getting what you need from Flying in a Blue Dream as well as Surfing with the Alien (except for "Circles"), and if one purchases Extremist and Crystal Planet in addition to Anthology you'll basically have everything you need to get up to speed.Electric Joe Satriani: An Anthology Overview

No Boundaries ReviewDo you know any of those kids who sit around and play Pokemon or Magic: The Gathering? Imagine that one of them picked up a guitar, and put the same amount of time into it. I give you Michael Angelo. The name alone embodies the human ego.
I listen to all the big-time shred guitarists...Petrucci, Malmsteen, Romeo, Satrianni, Vai, MacAlpine, Becker, Holdsworth - none of these guys compare to Michael Angelo when we want to talk about speed. This guy is off the charts. I don't think he's a better all-around guitarist as some of those other guys I've mentioned, because speed is just about all he has going for him. However, this record is still worthy of five stars when it comes to this style of music. All the notes he plays are not only struck at the speed of light, but they are crisp, clean, and clear. No mistakes. I agree with another reviewer who says he generally plays the same arpeggios and the same scales throughout the record, but this record is professional enough to have been the soundtrack for a Nintendo F-Zero game!
Another significant element is this 'twin-guitar' he plays, which I heard he can play at the same time. Someone told me they attended a live performance, and he pretty much just fretted both guitars simultaneously. This means he should have some sort of ultra-sensitive pickup that makes the intrument playable without a picking hand. Truly amazing. I won't do a track-by-track analysis, because most of the songs sound the same, except for the bluesy 'The Finish Line.' My favorite track is 'The Jam Game.'
This is the only Michael Angelo I own, because they are hard to find new, but I do plan on purchasing more in time. I also recommend the guitarist Joe Stump if you want a more 'raw' version of Michael Angelo.

Adventures of Bumblefoot ReviewThis is simply an amazing album. Thal, whose style is many times compared to the legendary Frank Zappa, takes instrumental guitar music into uncharted territories with this release.
It's hard to categorize the type of music on "The Adventures of Bumblefoot" - I've never really heard anything that compares. If you aren't used to experimental music, chances are you won't like this album the first few times you listen to it, but if you give it a chance, it will grow on you.
Thal is actually quite popular in Europe, and he has had some mainstream attention here as well - he is responsible for the rocking soundtrack on the Sony Playstation game "Wild Woody", and has been featured on instrumental guiatr compilations and popular guitar magazines.
If you are a fan of instrumental guitar, this is a must-have album - his playing is right up there with Satraini, Vai, Morse and Hoey.Adventures of Bumblefoot Overview

Black Swans & Wormhole Wizards ReviewFrom start to finish this album is really fun to listen to. I hadn't even read anything about the CD...just popped it in and started listening. Right away you know something is different: the keyboards. Once again Joe has changed studio bands bringing in Mike Keneally on keys and Allen Whitman on bass.
Not knowing what to expect after recent releases, (Super Colossal and Professor Satch were very technical and the Chickenfoot project was lame) I was happy once I heard the first note. There is amazing guitar work as one would expect on a Satch album, but it's not overdrive...the disc is full of solid, no BS guitar riffs with several keyboard solos. I think playing in a band (Chickenfoot) may have changed his approach a bit.
My favorite songs are "Premonition" , "Pyrrhic Victoria" , "Two Sides To Every Story" (very jazzy!) and "Wormhole Wizards". There is even a ballad "Littleworth Lane" which I can envision being played with the 10-minute solo live in concert.
Overall this a very impressive effort and my favorite since "Strange Beautiful Music" & "Crystal Planet".Black Swans & Wormhole Wizards Overview

Fuzz Universe ReviewI heard the single Fuzz Universe before the album was released, and I immediately thought this would easily be Paul Gilbert's best album. But after listening to the album as a whole, the title track might be the only song on the album that doesn't fit. This isn't a bad thing at all, just don't buy the album expecting every song to sound similar to Fuzz Universe. Paul has many changes in this album including tone, the use of wah wah, and even the unusual scale progressions I've never really heard from him. I've listened to the albums a few times through and I love it, so I've decided to do a full review.
1. Fuzz Universe - 10/10 Best song on the album in my opinion. Sounds like a Randy Rhoads tribute song, with a chorus to let you know it's still Paul Gilbert behind the guitar.
2. Olympic - 10/10 This song starts one way and finishes a completely different way. It starts off really joyous sounding, then about a couple minutes in everything changes. Gilbert plays a darker chord progression with Viking Kong type solos. It's an emotional journey throughout.
3. The Count Juan Chutrifo - 7/10 This song almost fills like a filler to me. It's fun to listen to, but nothing ever really happens throughout the song.
4. Bach Partita in Dm - 9/10 I love this piece, his tone makes it sound amazing.
5. Blue Orpheus - 4/10 The intro is good, then it becomes almost painful to listen to. Paul Gilbert did not write this song, in-case anyone hasn't read that on his site. This is a very weird and disappointing song, to me at least.
6. Will My Screen Door Stop Neptune - 8/10 The main riff is promising, but it's never really fulfilled. Still a great song though.
7. Propeller - 10/10 This is where the album starts to pick back up in my opinion. I love the jazzy sound and tone of this song. It's so emotionally great on the chorus, and there's solo from each instrument which is really cool.
8. Don't Rain On My Firewood - 9/10 The song really remains the same throughout, but the main riff is so great is my opinion that it works anyways. And it had a cool breakdown towards the end.
9. Plastic Dracula - 9/10 This song is similar to DROMF, has a great riff that drives throughout the whole song. But this song also has some of his greatest solo work that's reminiscent of the solo in Technical Difficulties.
10. Mantra The Lawn - 9/10 Another fun song. This is where you start to realize that Paul Gilbert is just having fun on this album. He wasn't trying to over think anything, just pure fun guitar grooving.
11. Blowtorch - 10/10 The final standout on the album I think. This song feels like a tribute song to himself, and I think he should have ended this album here.
12. Batter Up - 7/10 This might have been a fun song to play, but no way to end this great album. It should have been placed somewhere else. But then again the Japanese version of this album doesn't end here, so maybe those weren't Paul's intentions.
Overall, great album, 5 stars easily in my opinion. Has a few dull tracks but the others more than make up for that. If you're a guitarist, just listening to this album will make you better, more so than any other Paul Gilbert album.

Rising Force ReviewIt's always hard for me to read reviews of Yngwie Malmsteen's albums, because they always tend to fall into two categories: first, the aspiring guitar players who put more emphasis on Malmsteen's skill with his instrument than his actual music and whose sense of hero worship for Malmsteen leads them to venerate his recordings based purely on the speed of his soling ("if you like REAL guitar playing, check this out!"); and second, the pretentious would-be music journalists who feel compelled to dismiss anything he does based purely on the fact that he's Yngwie Malmsteen ("he plays with no feel, it's all just mindless speed and fireworks," etc.) Neither perception of Malmsteen's work is very accurate, and both are wrong for the simple reason that there was much more to Malmsteen's early work than mere guitar pyrotechnics and flashy speed-of-light arpeggiated solos -- a fact that his worshippers don't seem to care about and that his detractors refuse to acknowledge.
Malmsteen does, in fact, play with a good deal of feel and emotion on this album. His love and enthusiasm for making music show through in everything he plays here. And of course, at this point in his career, Malmsteen was still a guitar virtuoso of the highest order. Even though Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore had been the first heavy metal guitarist to incorporate classical scales into a hard rock style, and Ozzy Osbourne's late right-hand man Randy Rhoads had perfected what would come to be known as the neoclassical style of heavy metal guitar, Malmsteen built on their work, creating a fully-formed and innovative style. Make no mistake about it: Yngwie Malmsteen is an exceptionally talented guitarist, and this album was one of the last moments where he actually demonstrated it.
But what both Malmsteen's fans and his critics fail to realize is that there's a lot more to look at in his music than just instrumental prowess. "Rising Force" is made up of genuinely good songs. "Black Star" is one of the all-time great rock instrumentals; it's one of the few Malmsteen instrumental composition that's actually built around a signature riff and contains a distinguishable solo (and what a solo it is!), rather than the entire song being the solo. The same can be said for "Evil Eye" and "Little Savage." "Far Beyond the Sun" and "Icarus' Dream Suite," by contrast, feature Malmsteen using a technique that Joe Satriani would often employ: namely, letting his guitar take on the role of "lead vocalist."
The real lead vocalist of Malmsteen's band, however, was a talented young self-taught singer named Jeff Scott Soto. Soto is one of the finest vocalists in all of rock music, but on this album he rarely gets a chance to show it. His vocals are only featured on two tracks, neither of which lets him show what he's capable of. "Now Your Ships Are Burned" makes terrible use of his amazing range, and "As Above, So Below" only hints at the feats of vocal brilliance he would achieve on Malmsteen's second album, "Marching Out." As it is, Soto manages to hold his own on this record and sound convincing, even while singing Malmsteen's sub-par lyrics.
Both "Rising Force" and its follow-up, "Marching Out," see Yngwie Malmsteen in rare form, as his amazing instrumental talent is actually matched by the music he uses it to create. It's just a shame that most people -- including those who actually like Malmsteen's style of playing -- don't allow for him to do anything musically interesting, which is what he was most certainly doing on this album.Rising Force Overview

Joe Satriani: Satriani Live (2006) ReviewThis Satriani live video event is less glitzy than "Live in San Francisco" from 2000. The Anaheim stage is sparse, not as many lights, and Joe and the guys just get down to business, which in this case involves performing most of the material from the 2006 album "Super Colossal," with only five older tunes thrown in for variety (Blue Dream, Cool #9, Summer Song, Potato Head, Extremist). The technique is stellar as always--you can count on that from Joe. But they must have used between eight and twelve cameras to film this concert, because they jump cut between them constantly. You don't stay with a single camera angle for any longer than three seconds, so it gets annoying. I'd have filmed a more "guitar fan" friendly video with just a single hand-held DVD cam. The whole idea should be to make Joe and his fingers the main attraction. Joe is certainly the focal point here, but the trouble is one second you're looking at him from overhead, the next you're looking at him from a distance, the next you're looking at him several feet away from the left...you get the idea. You're not gonna pick up a lot of Joe's guitar technique by studying this. It's just too jumpy, which is an insult to fans of instrumental rock, who by definition have shown over the years that we're not ADHD kids hooked on stutter-shot MTV production values. For God's sake, next time just take a camera--ONE camera--and train it on Joe for a while without moving. The sound is good here, but you'll get dizzy watching it. The clamshell DVD case should come with dramamine tablets! Good bonus features, though. Guitar Battle ReviewOK forget these south american reviewers who have never heard of the most of the guitarists on this album. At the same time, forget the American people who have NEVER heard of these guitarists because they are too busy listening to poppy girl grabbing bands like KORN and Limp Bizkit. This album was released in Japan for a reason and this reason is that the Japanese appreciate a good ass rocking guitar session. Their pop music is indicative of this as most Japanese pop songs have an average of 4 guitar solos per every 7 songs as compared to America where it is one guitar solo per seven pop songs.
George Lynch and John Petrucci come out as the most technical guitarists on this albums. Everyone else is stand by on rock and blues scales. Of course that would have been Lynch as well if it were not for his recent (1994) lessons at Guitar Institute of Technology in Los Angeles.
For once we also get to hear John Petrucci go improv as most of the Dream Theater series guitars have been mainly real hard studio work and composing. You can tell the difference in each guitarist as each uses his own unique sound on the album.
This is a must have both in session creativity and unique guitar theory for the avid guitar listener/fan. No, Greg Howe does not make a special appearance (though in my opinion, Greg and his star pupil, Prashant Aswani, excel above these sessioneers) in this album, but there is plenty to listen to otherwise like Andy Timmons, Brad Gillis, and Al Pitrelli (virtual unknowns in modern guitar).
Never before has there been such a collection of incredible guitarists on one album.Guitar Battle Overview

Chamber Metal: Neo-Classical Metal Guitar ReviewThis compilation disc is neither great nor horrible. You may feel the same way about this cd as you would to a dance or dream club compilation cd in that you will like some songs while others are just "Ok" or "Blah".
Later on some neat effects are used in the percussion area of some tracks. And, though hearing Vivaldi's (Summer) Presto on the electric guitar is fun at first, I still prefer it performed on a violin. The tracks by -Paste- are good driving songs and occasionally remind me of Therion. As is brought out in other reviews the music here isn't all that original, but good every once in a while.
So, if you have any loose change lying around...

Concerto Suite for Electric Guitar ReviewThis recording is a landmark for Yngwie and for electric guitar. I say it is a landmark because very few electric guitarists have actually composed and recorded a concerto for their instrument. Fewer still have performed their work with a world class philharmonic. I hope to see more like this from Yngwie and from other electric guitarists as it will advance the young instrument further beyond mere pop-culture music.
My only gripe (a minor one)about this recording is that Yngwie (as usual) overplays at points. There is an extended acoustic solo (which by Yngwie's own admission is improvised) that borders on obvious "wanking." Such is inappropriate for this kind of music. Improvising is great as long as it doesn't sound like mere improvising - especially in this context.
Yngwie said in an interview that he had problems with the mix recording this live so he had to punch the guitar track in. This is too bad since it makes live performances of his piece less likely. He probably was too loud. I saw him last year after waiting for years to see him and was extremely dissappointed by his volume which was so lound and piercing, it hurt - and I could not wait to leave. What made it more dissappointing was that his playing was really good that night.
Anyone who likes this should love Uli Roth's "Prologue to Symphonic Legends." Uli is a major influence on Yngwie and has even more depth. If Yngwie would use a guitar like Uli's extended range Sky guitar, his classical performances would be even better.
All in all I would highly recommend this to guitar fans. This is probably the finest work from one of the world's top guitarists.Concerto Suite for Electric Guitar Overview

Paul Gilbert: Get Out of My Yard (2007) Review3 words...BUY...THIS...DVD!!! Over 2 hours of the most intense shred you've ever seen in your life! Every song, yes, EVERY song from the Get Out of My Yard (GOMY) album is covered highlighting the main sections of each song. Only downside is there's no on-screen tab and no tab booklet included, but the closeups on Paul's fingers are great and you should have no trouble following along. Awesome live performances of some songs from GOMY after the lesson section and even technique is covered (hammer-ons/pull-offs, arpeggios, and--my favorite--alternate picking). G3 - Live in Concert (1996) ReviewThree extremely talented and unique guitarists come together for one of the best concerts I've ever seen! Viewing this made me feel like I was on the front row! And the most amazing thing (besides the music) is that sells for just 10 bucks! Absolutely the wisest 10 bucks I've ever spent! I give it 15 stars!
Some may think this is a contest to see who is the best but I don't look at it that way. SATRIANI, JOHNSON, AND VAI each bring something unique to the concert. 7th Song: Enchanting Guitar Melodies - Archives 1 ReviewI am one of Steve's greatest fans. I've listened to all of his solo
work and this one is the best. Five stars doesn't do it justice. It
gets "70 x 7!" I agree with jan, this music is definitely
from another galaxy--a galaxy of peace, love, passion and mysticism. I
will cherish this the rest of my life.
Here are Steve's words about
this CD located inside the cover with additional notes on each song as
well:
"Traditionally, I have made the 7th song on all my CD's
the mellifluous guitar ballad that serves the melody on a silver
platter. In numerology, the number 7 is shrouded in mystique. In a
record sequence, it has always felt like the sweet spot. These songs
are more devotional in nature than technical. They are a reflection of
one man's desire to expose a glimmer of the depth of his longing for
spiritual communion."
Steve is simply a master. You will not be
disappointed with this. There are surprises in store for you; one at

Concerto Suite for Electric Guitar and Orchestra (2005) ReviewBack in the mid 1980's, when Yngwie first burst onto the scene, Yngwie Malmsteen said that a dream of his was to compose a concerto for Electric Guitar and Orchestra. After hearing "Rising Force", I always thought that it would be great to hear "Black Star", "Far beyond the Sun" and "Icarus Dream Suite" played with the depth of an orchestra in the background instead of rock instruments. At the beginning of this millenium, the dream was realized with the release of "Concerto Suite for Electric Guitar and Orchestra" on CD. Now that same Suite is available on DVD. This is not a typical working of a rock band and orchestra which has been done by everyone from Elton John to Metallica. Yngwie wrote every note for every instrument and even for a full Choir. His understanding of music theory is far superior to any previous attempts at orchestra and rock.(Except for Keith Emerson) Proof of this can be heard on the "Black Star Overture" which features the orchestra playing melodies from 'Black Star' in an overture style. This really shows how Yngwie's classical style can stand out on its own without him playing over it. The Concerto Suite is aptly named as it doesn't follow the typical 3 movement format of a romantic period Concerto. Instead, this is a real classically styled Suite with an electric guitar replacing a violin. The Concerto Suite is divided into eleven parts. All of the parts have their own defined melodies and style. The Concerto Suite will not disappoint fans of Malmsteen's technique as all of the string skipping, Sweep Picking and alternate picking styles of Yngwie are played over some orchestrated melodies. The orchestration might not be on par with Bach, Vivaldi or someone of the actual Classical Era but it is far better than any Avante Garde period orchestration. The orchestration is diverse enough to sound like it could belong to the Classical or Romantic period. It would be great to hear Yngwie compose Baroque Period Counterpoint like his idol J.S. Bach, but that might be on the second Concerto Suite.
As previously stated, the guitar playing by Yngwie has never been better. He lets loose on all of the parts of the suite and plays some amazing acoustic guitar on "Prelude" and "Tocatta". He is truly enjoying himself and the guitar playing shows it.
Also on this DVD is the "Icarus Dream Fanfare" which is a piece based on the main theme from 'Icarus Dream Suite". This piece also is amazing and the greatness of the main theme is accentuated even when Yngwie does his thing over it. No overplaying by Malmsteen on this one.
There are also great orchestrated versions of "Trilogy Suite", "Blitzkrieg", "Evil Eye", "Brothers" and "Far Beyond the Sun". All of these are superior to the versions with a rock band. The version of "Far Beyond the Sun" is simply incredible, and I wish that Yngwie would do more of this on the next Concerto Suite. His ability to compose classical influenced melodies and to play guitar like a violin are much more clear with an orchestra and not with a rock band.
I highly recommend this to fans of Yngwie or to anyone who wants to hear something so original it defies previous conventions. The wait for true Classical Rock is over. Yngwie's realization is better than the dream.Concerto Suite for Electric Guitar and Orchestra (2005) Overview

G3: Live in Tokyo (2005) ReviewG3 returns in fine form with "G3 Live in Tokyo". The same formula as the last two g3 DVDs is repeated. Joe Satriani teams up with Steve Vai and find a third guitarist worthy of sharing the stage with them. Each member performs his own set and then all 3 jam on stage together. It worked on the previous 2 DVDs and it works again. This time, with the addition of John Petrucci of Dream Theater/LTE, is the best time. Yes, there is only 90 minutes worth of music, but if you want the full G3 experience go see them. The 90 minutes is a great deal for under $15. Now to the show:
John Petrucci plays a couple of songs from his "Suspended Animation" disc. I saw G3 with Petrucci back in 2001 and thought that he should release the music he was playing. Now he has. Both songs showcase Petrucci's ability to combine speed, tone and phrasing in an instrumental form. Both songs have a couple of tone and time changes, and Petrucci shows why he is considered one of the best guitarists in the rock genre. (Or any genre for that matter) Fans of Dream Theater or any of John's other projects won't be dissapointed. John is joined by, DT drummer, Mike Portnoy and Dave Larue of Steve Morse and Dreg's fame. The rhythm section is solid and all over John's music. A very good set.
Steve Vai is next and continues to be the most energetic of the G3 members. Vai opens with "The Audience is Listening" from Passion & Warfare and it is a blistering version. Steve and bassist Billy Sheehan go wild during this song. They trade fours, exchange picking hands, and play some high speed unison lines. These two have been mesmerizing together since the David Lee Roth Band, and have taken their showmanship to new levels. "Building the Church" and "K'm-Pee-Du-Wee" are the other Vai tunes and Steve is his amazing self. Vai has been guilty of composing tunes that I can't identify with, but these are both great compositions and Steve's playing is true virtuosity at its best. Great set from a great showman.
Joe Satriani's set is also very good. He plays great versions of "Up In Flames" and 'Searching' but is guilty of not stretching out as far as he can. Still, both of these songs are excellent and show Satch's unparalled ability to combine catchy melodies with guitar virtuosity. 'War' is a song that Satch stretches out on and improvises a unique ending. Excellent version.
As always, the DVD ends with all 3 guitarists on stage. "Foxey Lady" is the first tune. Mike Portnoy plays drums on this tune. How can you go wrong with these 3 guys jamming to Jimi? The last two songs have Jeff Campitelli on Drums and Billy Sheehan joins Matt Bisonette on bass. The two bassists alternate taking the vocal duties and do a decent job. Both songs feature each guitarist taking a solo spot and then all 3 trading 4s at the end. More G3 madness done right. As always, if you aren't a fan of guitar, you won't be a fan of this. If you are a fan of any of these three, then you should get this. I am a fan of all 3, and find it to be the best of the 3.
