Live From Austin TX '84 ReviewThis DVD/CD twin pack is, indeed, a live 1984 performance aired on Austin City Limits that same year. I know this for a fact since my wife and I were there the evening of the shoot. This power trio was billed as "Eric Johnson and The Avenue". The group included Rob Alexander on bass (great angelic voice) and Steve Meador on drums. My wife and I attended many of Eric's shows in the Houston area and we enjoyed this particular lineup during that time period. It was a period just before the "Tones" album was produced.
This performance includes one of my all-time favorite pop songs "All I Need" that Eric wrote and had been performing for several years prior to this performance. I'm glad it showed up on this DVD/CD. It is great to have this on DVD since all I had, previously, was an old grainy VHS (in mono) I made when this ACL originally aired. The original segment had also been cut to 30 minutes versus the 48+ minutes (also in DTS 5.1) included on this release. Great to see the additional material and hear the great audio remastered so well.
There is another ACL performance out there that I hope gets released, as well. Maybe we will see it later in 2011.

Up Close ReviewIt's been five long years since the release of Eric Johnson's last disc "Bloom" and now, finally is his latest release "Up Close".
For Mr. Johnson this is a quick turnaround for new music seeing that the span between "Bloom" and his previous release "Venus Isle" was eight lonnnggg years.
This is what we Eric Johnson fans have grown accustomed to because the end result is always outstanding and this release is no different.
This disc is a little different then previous releases.
Eric who does most of his own vocals, has many guests taking over the vocal reins. Steve Miller on "Texas", bluesman Jonny Lang on "Austin" and Malford Milligan does "Brilliant Room".
Guitar greats Sonny Landreth and Jimmy Vaughn also make appearances playing guitar on "Your Book" and "Texas" respectively.
The great Johnson instrumentals are also here. Fatdaddy and Gem are two of my new favorites.
After giving it a few listens it could very well be one his best.
This will be in my home system for quite some time.
So EJ and guitar fans go out and buy this as an early Christmas present to yourself, because, like me, I couldn't wait.Up Close Overview

Ah Via Musicom ReviewWhat do I say about this record? Can I possibly express how it's shaped me through all my various stages, from rock and jazz to funk to hip-hop to psychadelic trance and breaks? I guess one has to be familiar with the mountains, and do lots of solo hikes to really dig the magnitude of "High Landrons", as that song was made for sitting on top of a mountain and contemplating the world. In the town where I grew up, you could hear the trains pass at night even though the tracks were miles away -- "Forty Mile Town". And I dare you to sit outside (or in a house with lots of glass) and look at the stars and the moon and listen to "East Wes" without feeling a thousand deep emotions at once.
If ever an album rode that mile-high razor's edge between pure cheese and deeply moving rock-and-roll, this is it. "Cliffs of Dover" is the song most folks cite as their first Eric Johnson experience, and to hear it in context with Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and all the other stuff coming out in the early 90's is to realize just how different a cat Eric really is. Here he has washy reverb all over the track, high-falutin' guitar pyrotechnics, and a myriad of swooshes and swirls and shimmering cymbals. All the makings of a Kurt Bestor or Yanni song, yet the depths here reach to the very bottom of your soul and there's only one word which adequately describes the feeling you get -- stately, regal, as if you were blessed to be king for a day and the best musicians in the land made music in your honor.
And despite all that it's an excellent record. Not only does it not dive into rock dumbness or Yanni cheese, it also manages to use every smooth jazz effect and _still_ not sound like crap. Witness "East Wes", Eric's tribute to Wes Montgomery. You could almost hear this song on a smooth jazz station (the antithesis of good music), but if you did it'd make everything else sound like the consumer plastic it is. Eric isn't trying to do straight-ahead Jazz, instead he's showing us this whole other world where none of these genre references really make sense.
It's not often that someone makes a really great record. It's even more rare when almost all the songs stand outside the accepted limits of hipness and make the rest of music look so unnecessary. Highly recommended.Ah Via Musicom Overview

Eric Johnson - Live From Austin Tx (2005) ReviewIf you have even the slightest interest in the playing of an electric guitar you absolutely MUST check out this DVD.
Eric Johnson fans have been circulating old VHS copies of this for decades. EJ has appeared on "Austin City Limits" as often as any performer - perhaps helped by being from that town, although I don't recall seeing other Texans appearing nearly as often. Austin City Limits is one of the most treasured live-music shows in American History. Madonna and Britney Spears and other over-hyped lip-syncing media sell-outs can hog up the mainstream airways as much as they like - all Austin City Limits performers have artistic heft that can't be faked.
This 1988 performance is dated by Eric's "Flock of Seagulls" hairdo and Sergeant Pepper/Michael Jackson/John Phillip Sousa jacket. But the music is timeless. Eric joins his perfectly supporting 2-man bass and drums combo to blow our minds. The now-platinum Ah Via Musicom had just been released and it is fair to say he was "peaking". A known perfectionist in the studio, he would record tracks over and over and over again until they were "just right" and I saw in an interview that he simply didn't think he could play better than on that recording. That being said, he doesn't have the opportunity to "redo" on this live performance, but as he unleashes the most overwhelming guitar technique ever known it doesn't really matter, does it? The man is a force of nature in this performance. Best of all - the DVD features crystal clarity in both the picture and audio. Every one of his flood of notes rings like a bell.
"Musicom" cuts like "Steve's Boogie" and "Desert Rose" surround his performance of perhaps the most incredible instrumental in rock history "Cliffs of Dover". He also covers some Hendrix and "Are You Experienced?" makes us remember the left-handed master while marveling at Hendrix' able successor.
The album-oriented rock airwaves have been flooded for decades with speed demons who race up and down their stratocasters without a thought for tone or note selection. Here is where Eric Johnson completely shines: although as fast as Vai or Malmsteen, Mr. Johnson is as thoughtful and careful in his note selection as Clapton or Louis Armstrong. His tone is so bell-like clear... it is simply unrivaled.

G3 - Live in Concert (1996) ReviewThree extremely talented and unique guitarists come together for one of the best concerts I've ever seen! Viewing this made me feel like I was on the front row! And the most amazing thing (besides the music) is that sells for just 10 bucks! Absolutely the wisest 10 bucks I've ever spent! I give it 15 stars!
Some may think this is a contest to see who is the best but I don't look at it that way. SATRIANI, JOHNSON, AND VAI each bring something unique to the concert. G-3 LIVE IN CONCERT is a 3 song live playing of each artist and then they all jam together at the end in complete rapport and friendship. You can tell they all respect each other alot. The running time is 75 minutes of "glued to your seat" entertainment! NOW THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKIN' 'BOUT!
Here are the songs in order: SATRIANI plays 1) Cool No9 2) Flying In A Blue Dream and 3) Summer Sky. The second is my favorite. JOHNSON plays second. His songs are 1) Intro Song 2) Manhattan and 3) SRV (Which is dedicated to the late, great Stevie Ray Vaughn.) The second is my favorite. VAI plays last. His songs are 1) Answers 2) For The Love Of God and 3) The Attitude Song. Again the second song is my favorite.
"THE JAM SONGS" (FEATURING ALL 3 G-3'S) are: 1) Going Down 2) My Guitar Wants To Kill Your Mama and 3) Red House (in honor of the late, great Jimi Hendrix.) The third song is my favorite.
I highly and whole-heartedly recommend this videotape--incredible sound, very entertaining, diverse, and fun to view. You will not be disappointed; trust me! BUY THIS NOW! DON'T MISS IT!
