Surfing With the Alien ReviewI challenge anyone to release a more accessible instrumental rock album than Joe Satriani's "Surfing With the Alien." I don't play guitar myself, but that is hardly an impediment to enjoying his music...and that's probably the best thing about Joe -- you don't need to be a musician yourself to love his songs.
Surfing With the Alien was Joe's first successful record, and after listening to it just once you'll understand why. Joe eschews needless self-indulgence like most 'guitar heroes' and just plays rocking songs with interesting melodies. My favorite songs are "Crushing Day" -- an exhilarating song with mind-bending solos and some good hooks -- and "Echo" -- a great track that flows naturally and beautifully. Every other song here is excellent, from the epic and orchestral-sounding "Hill of the Skull" to the pretty ballad "Always With Me; Always With You."
I highly recommend this album to guitar players and rock fans alike.Surfing With the Alien Overview

Black Swans & Wormhole Wizards ReviewFrom start to finish this album is really fun to listen to. I hadn't even read anything about the CD...just popped it in and started listening. Right away you know something is different: the keyboards. Once again Joe has changed studio bands bringing in Mike Keneally on keys and Allen Whitman on bass.
Not knowing what to expect after recent releases, (Super Colossal and Professor Satch were very technical and the Chickenfoot project was lame) I was happy once I heard the first note. There is amazing guitar work as one would expect on a Satch album, but it's not overdrive...the disc is full of solid, no BS guitar riffs with several keyboard solos. I think playing in a band (Chickenfoot) may have changed his approach a bit.
My favorite songs are "Premonition" , "Pyrrhic Victoria" , "Two Sides To Every Story" (very jazzy!) and "Wormhole Wizards". There is even a ballad "Littleworth Lane" which I can envision being played with the 10-minute solo live in concert.
Overall this a very impressive effort and my favorite since "Strange Beautiful Music" & "Crystal Planet".Black Swans & Wormhole Wizards Overview

Eric Johnson - Live From Austin Tx (2005) ReviewIf you have even the slightest interest in the playing of an electric guitar you absolutely MUST check out this DVD.
Eric Johnson fans have been circulating old VHS copies of this for decades. EJ has appeared on "Austin City Limits" as often as any performer - perhaps helped by being from that town, although I don't recall seeing other Texans appearing nearly as often. Austin City Limits is one of the most treasured live-music shows in American History. Madonna and Britney Spears and other over-hyped lip-syncing media sell-outs can hog up the mainstream airways as much as they like - all Austin City Limits performers have artistic heft that can't be faked.
This 1988 performance is dated by Eric's "Flock of Seagulls" hairdo and Sergeant Pepper/Michael Jackson/John Phillip Sousa jacket. But the music is timeless. Eric joins his perfectly supporting 2-man bass and drums combo to blow our minds. The now-platinum Ah Via Musicom had just been released and it is fair to say he was "peaking". A known perfectionist in the studio, he would record tracks over and over and over again until they were "just right" and I saw in an interview that he simply didn't think he could play better than on that recording. That being said, he doesn't have the opportunity to "redo" on this live performance, but as he unleashes the most overwhelming guitar technique ever known it doesn't really matter, does it? The man is a force of nature in this performance. Best of all - the DVD features crystal clarity in both the picture and audio. Every one of his flood of notes rings like a bell.
"Musicom" cuts like "Steve's Boogie" and "Desert Rose" surround his performance of perhaps the most incredible instrumental in rock history "Cliffs of Dover". He also covers some Hendrix and "Are You Experienced?" makes us remember the left-handed master while marveling at Hendrix' able successor.
The album-oriented rock airwaves have been flooded for decades with speed demons who race up and down their stratocasters without a thought for tone or note selection. Here is where Eric Johnson completely shines: although as fast as Vai or Malmsteen, Mr. Johnson is as thoughtful and careful in his note selection as Clapton or Louis Armstrong. His tone is so bell-like clear... it is simply unrivaled.

Joe Satriani: Satriani Live (2006) ReviewThis Satriani live video event is less glitzy than "Live in San Francisco" from 2000. The Anaheim stage is sparse, not as many lights, and Joe and the guys just get down to business, which in this case involves performing most of the material from the 2006 album "Super Colossal," with only five older tunes thrown in for variety (Blue Dream, Cool #9, Summer Song, Potato Head, Extremist). The technique is stellar as always--you can count on that from Joe. But they must have used between eight and twelve cameras to film this concert, because they jump cut between them constantly. You don't stay with a single camera angle for any longer than three seconds, so it gets annoying. I'd have filmed a more "guitar fan" friendly video with just a single hand-held DVD cam. The whole idea should be to make Joe and his fingers the main attraction. Joe is certainly the focal point here, but the trouble is one second you're looking at him from overhead, the next you're looking at him from a distance, the next you're looking at him several feet away from the left...you get the idea. You're not gonna pick up a lot of Joe's guitar technique by studying this. It's just too jumpy, which is an insult to fans of instrumental rock, who by definition have shown over the years that we're not ADHD kids hooked on stutter-shot MTV production values. For God's sake, next time just take a camera--ONE camera--and train it on Joe for a while without moving. The sound is good here, but you'll get dizzy watching it. The clamshell DVD case should come with dramamine tablets! Good bonus features, though. G3 - Live in Denver (2003) ReviewI saw one of the first G3 shows several years ago in Los Angeles and it was a ton of fun. However, I had my doubts when I ordered this DVD as I suspected that it may just be another show of ego with a thousand notes per second. I was pleasantly surprised when I popped it in and found a laid back and fun show. Satch, while relatively less technical then the other two on the ticket, is my favorite because he plays with the most taste and feel. His set is rockin' and the least mechanical of the three. His note choice and style is just more mature and reminds me of what a great electric guitar player sounds like. No frills Joe never disappoints. Vai's playing is maturing nicely and he is starting to play from the heart. He is arguable the best all around electric guitar player alive for his technical ability and music breadth of knowledge is matched by few. Unfortunately, Vai only gets a few songs in this set, so he doesn't get a chance to really shine on this DVD, though I really like his treatment of Hendrix's "Little Wing."
Malmsteen was a great treat to see. Having never seen him live but casually respecting his audio work, I was very interested to see this legendary machine do his thing. What Malmsteen lacks in feel and taste he makes up for in grand style with stunning command of the guitar. Truly, he is an amazing guitar player. His fat fingers move at mind numbing speeds up and down that scalloped maple '73 strat finger board and across the strings in precise fluid motion. Really unreal and something you must see to believe. Segovia would probably scoff at his ability suggesting his is merely a circus act, but I find him fascinating to watch.
Three very different styles highlighted and all possess tremendous talent. Highly recommended for all guitar music freaks.
