Chamber Metal: Neo-Classical Metal Guitar ReviewThis compilation disc is neither great nor horrible. You may feel the same way about this cd as you would to a dance or dream club compilation cd in that you will like some songs while others are just "Ok" or "Blah".
Later on some neat effects are used in the percussion area of some tracks. And, though hearing Vivaldi's (Summer) Presto on the electric guitar is fun at first, I still prefer it performed on a violin. The tracks by -Paste- are good driving songs and occasionally remind me of Therion. As is brought out in other reviews the music here isn't all that original, but good every once in a while.
So, if you have any loose change lying around...

Hard to Find Pop Instrumentals II ReviewLike everything in Eric's line of "hard-to-find on CD" discs, this one is filled with gems that have been hard to come by on legitimate releases. What makes Eric's releases so unusual is that rather than scouring the obscure edges of pop music, they collect stellar examples of chart hits that somehow slipped though the cracks of other anthologies. That makes Eric compilations terrific musical and nostalgic experiences.
Volume two of their pop instrumental series is one of Eric's strongest discs to date. Instrumentals have a hard time cracking the American charts, and so those that do find an unusually rare resonance with listeners. On occasion these instrumentals are tied to cultural phenomena such as hit TV shows ("The Bonanza Theme," "Dragnet," "Quentin's Theme," and "Bandstand Boogie") or commercials ("No Matter What Shape (Your Stomach's In)" and "Music to Watch Girls By"), but more often than not they're just unusual, maddeningly hummable pieces of music that won't leave a listener's mind.
High on the can't-get-it-out-of-your-head list is Bent Fabric's laconic "Alley Cat" and Don Robertson's "The Happy Whistler." The latter tune pairs nicely with Whistling Jack Smith's "I Was Kaiser Bill's Batman," as rare examples of music that can oust "It's a Small World" from your cerebral cortex. Other tracks, such as Horst Jankowski's "A Walk in the Black Forest," capture a mood like no lyric ever could, and Boots Randolph's "Yakety Sax" had three lives, first as a flop, then as a hit, then most eternally as Benny Hill's closing chase theme.
This is an incredibly rich collection of songs covering orchestral pop, lounge, rock, jazz, ragtime and more. The tracks are beautifully mastered and with plenty of true stereo (mono on #5-8 and 19-21). Joseph Laredo's liner notes are informative, and the packaging provides detail on chart and release dates.Hard to Find Pop Instrumentals II Overview

The Wild West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection ReviewAll the music on this CD is performed by the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. They do a good job overall although some cuts lack the syncopated verve and bounce of the originals. But, hey . . . that's SOP for anthologies. Their version of Silverado is great. So is The Cowboys. Their rendition of The Alamo is lackluster, even if technically well played. The Searchers has all the Civil War tunes from the film interwoven into it, as it's supposed to. Glory woefully misses the Harlem Boy's Choir--a chorus of adult Czechs are just no substitute--and they don't even play the film's main theme, so skip that one. How the West Was Won is too controlled. The theme from Gettysburg is marred by a lead trumpet that is too loud--bad mixing job, guys. They do Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven theme well. WARNING: these CDs are painted to look like marshal stars, and they wouldn't play on my car's CD player. They would play on my computer, however.
