Cream - Royal Albert Hall - London May 2-3-5-6 2005 (2005) ReviewI bought this DVD with some degree of trepidation given that most of these reunion gigs/albums whatever seldom live up to the hype Rumours have abounded about Jack Bruce's poor health and finances as well as personal emnities between the various band members but in the end I could not pass it up.
From the moment that the band walked on the stage I had a lump in my throat and from the very fist note it was clear that in the intervening years since Goodbye Cream the only thing that had changed was the degree of skill and virtuosity that each possessed had increased.
I am not churlish about the song selection given the stated number of songs that the trio had played together summed to only 35 as per Bruce including the ones that had never been played. I am sure that each of us has our own favourites that we wanted them to play and we were disappointed by their exclusion but ce la vie. I do agree with others that a gesture to the diehard fans about making available the totality of the concerts available on CD would be a good one. Especially since Eric has done it before regarding his solo performances in the same venue.
Before foccussing on the songs I must say that for me the most poignant moment can when they were performing Badge and Clapton left the section attributed to his friend George on the album silent before resuming his blistering, very heartfelt playing. If these shows are about anything it is about learning that life is too short for holding grudges and we should all be thankful of each opportunity to share our wonderful gifts with others.
Aside from the music the highlights of this two disc set lie in the camera shot of Brian May in the audience during the performance, another friend who has been a good asscoiate of Eric's in recent years and the brief interviews, alas each done separately giving us insight into the shows.
AS for the music, it is a shock to the system to see what these three old men can put out on stage just in terms of the sheer power of the trio. The band rehearsed a lot we know but the blistering improvisations remain outstanding and the Grateful Dead would be proud. The interplay between Bruce and Clapton was a joy to behold and Bruce's bass almost seemed to be alive. Ginger Baker may be getting on a bit but he can still pound the life out of the drum kit.
For me Crossroads brought tears to my eyes as did Badge, The initial chords of the blues song seemed an anachronism in an odd sort of way but Clapton has a way of giving each song another idiosyncratic feel at the heart of the blues tradition but at the same time in a very contemporary manner. His seemingly endless capacity to express his emotions in a different way in each song in such an easy manner is incredible and that was no more so in evidence in We're Going Wrong.
To me none of the songs were a disappointment even Pressed Rat and Wharthog which even seemed to belong. You almost wanted the discs to go on forever and the surprising thing is that by the end they do not seem to have been on long at all.
I thought that I had seen the pinnacle of Clapton playing at the Concert for George in the loving yet mournful rendition of While My Guitar Gently Weeps yet in these shows you found the full gamut of hurt and anguish, joy and pain, being delivered almost offhandedly by a Clapton whose own life experiences have earned him the term blues player. These three guys on the stage infront of such a mixed age audience drew us all in the to excellent playing and in effect into their own intimate relationship. The DVD selection in the fantastic sound derserves to be in every home.
Cream we salute thee. The Cream is dead. Long live the Cream.Cream - Royal Albert Hall - London May 2-3-5-6 2005 (2005) OverviewIn May of 2005 Cream returned to London's Royal Albert Hall-to the same stage where they had completed what was thought to be their final performance in 1968. It was one of the most eagerly anticipated, hard-to-get tickets in rock history. With the exception of a brief reunion set at their 1993 induction into the Rock and roll Hall of Fame, Cream had not played together in nearly four decades. This DVD documents Cream's momentous London shows. Performances from each of the four nights are featured and much more. Also included are alternate performances and interviews with Ginger Baker, Jack Bruce, and Eric Clapton. Cream formed in 1966 and disbanded in 1968. The band were a prolific and thrilling live act and toured incessantly in their short but remarkable history.Track Listings: I'm So Glad, Spoonful, Outside Woman Blues, Pressed Rat & Warthog, Sleepy Time Time, N.S.U., Badge, Politician, Sweet Wine, Rollin' & Tumblin', Stormy Monday, Deserted Cities of the Heart, Born Under a Bad Sign, We're Going Wrong, Crossroads, Sitting on Top of the World, White Room, Toad, Sunshine of Your Love, Spoonful (Alternate Takes), Sleepy Time Time (Alternate Takes), Badge (Alternate Takes), Sweet Wine (Alternate Takes), Rollin' & Tumblin', We're Going Wrong, White Room, Sunshine of Your Love

Eric Clapton - One More Car One More Rider (2001) ReviewIf it's true that Eric is finished with touring, then he has left us with one masterpiece to view over and over again. It takes us through his career from Cream, Derek & the Dominoes, and his solo works up to Reptile. I saw two of these concerts on this tour and the DVD captures it as wonderfully as I remember it. Clapton's guitar work is fantatic whether on acoustic or electric. he guitar solos are out of this world especially on electric(even though I missed Ol' Blackie). The sound on DTS is superb. And as always his band is top notch. Actually there are twenty songs on the DVD "Will It Go Round In Circles" a Billy Preston hit is performd by him. As you can tell I'm not a writer but I just had to comment on this DVD and if you like this DVD, buy "Live At Hyde Park".Eric Clapton - One More Car One More Rider (2001) Overview

Riding With the King ReviewForget any apprehensions you may have had about this pairing of blues legend B.B. King and guitar god Eric Clapton. This CD should satisfy fans of King, Clapton and blues purists alike. Unlike the sometimes strained vocals on Clapton's 1994 blues album From The Cradle, there is nothing forced about this collaboration.
Some of these songs are reworkings of some of King's earliest sides like 1951's "Three O'Clock Blues," where King's single-note leads are balanced against Clapton's more fluid runs. And Joe Sample's piano playing is stellar throughout. Or the slow blues of 1954's "Heart Beats Like a Hammer" and 1955's shuffling "Ten Long Years," where Clapton steps back from the mic and lets King's vocal carry the song. (Although with Clapton now in his mid-fifties, he's nearly twice as old as King was when he first recorded these songs and has earned the right and acquired the ability to sing the blues with authority as he does on the rest of the tracks on this CD.)
Whether they're playing the acoustic blues of Big Bill Broonzy's "Key To The Highway," a funky version of the Sam and Dave classic "Hold On I'm Coming" or the electrifying "Days Of Old," these two artists play the blues with conviction. And the supporting cast is superb, including guitarists Andy Fairweather Low and Texas blues sensation Doyle Bramhall II. (In fact, two of Bramhalls's songs from last year's Jellycream--"Marry You" and "I Wanna Be"--are included here.)
The only song that at first glance seemed out of place was John Hiatt's title track, but once I hit the play button any misgivings I had immediately disappeared. There is not a false note on this album. The only disappointment is that after sixty minutes, it's over. If King can still play like this at his age--he'll turn seventy-five this fall--I'm looking forward to what clapton will be doing in another twenty years. This is as good as the blues gets. Eric Clapton & Friends in Concert: A Benefit for the Crossroads... (1999) ReviewI was at the epic length concert on June 30, 1999 (not July 30, as mistakenly written on this site), and I had a wonderful time listening to some of the most incredible guitar playing I'd ever heard. I was overjoyed to hear that a video/DVD of the show would be released, but I was very disappointed with the actual product. The concert lasted over three hours, and Amazon.com notes that the DVD/video is 170 minutes in their review, yet it is only 108 minutes! More than an hour of music has been cut out by the manufacturers, including what I believed to be the highlights of the show. Gone are Eric Clapton's "My Father's Eyes", "Pilgrim", Sheryl Crow's "Run Baby Run", "Leaving Las Vegas", "If It Makes You Happy", and Bob Dylan's "Not Dark Yet", "Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat". Gone is the showstopping duet of between Dylan and Clapton of "Born In Time", a song Dylan wrote in 1991 that was covered by Clapton on his most recent album. Instead, what the producers of this DVD and video have put out are solid performanes of songs that have already been released on live albums and videos countless times. Sure, I enjoy hearing "Layla", "Sunshine Of Your Love", "Tears In Heaven", "Wonderful Tonight", and "Old Love", but I have them live on other Clapton live releases, and they sound very much the same; I would have rathered to have selections that no other live recording is avaliable of, or even better, the entire concert. DVDs can hold 4-8 hours, so there's no reason why they couldn't have included everything. Also, on the DVD, the producers do not allow the "angle" feature to be used; for those unfamiliar with DVD, this is a feature that allows you to change the camera angle at which you're viewing the picture. It's especially useful in concert videos, because if you want to look at Clapton's guitar solo when they're showing Steve Gadd's drumming, you can - if they encode that feature, which they inexplicably chose not to. What angles they did choose were poorly selected; it's filled with bad framing and inappropriate zooms. It's a shame they didn't, because it was a fantastic concert.Eric Clapton & Friends in Concert: A Benefit for the Crossroads... (1999) OverviewOn July 30, 1999, Eric Clapton put together a stellar band and invited a few friends--Bob Dylan, Sheryl Crow, MaryJ. Blige, and David Sanborn--to perform a one-night-only concert in New York City's Madison Square Garden as a benefit for Clapton's Crossroads Centre at Antigua.170 minutes.

Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood: Live from Madison Square Garden (2009) ReviewI bought the CD and the DVD versions of the Clapton/Winwood MSG as a combo from Amazon. The CD (which I reviewed in its listing) I gave four stars to - it's very good, but now that I've seen the DVD, I'd give the DVD five stars, mainly for what it adds to the equation: the visuals. While it might seem counter-intuitive to grade musicians of this caliber by `what you can see', the DVD added such a great dimension to the show, in terms of WATCHING them solo and seeing the interplay between them, and their excellent band (these guys have serious CHOPS), that I think the DVD ups the ante, hence I'm giving the DVD 5 stars. The musicianship is excellent (they make it look so EASY....i guess that's what the best guys do when they're on their game? Plus they're clearly having a good time up there), and it's great to be able to see who's playing what (namely, that Winwood plays guitar on the first two cuts, and then on several others toward the end - he's a very good guitarist, and holds his own with Clapton, sometimes trading solos. I wasn't exactly sure what SW was playing on, just from listening to the CD - Chris Stainton is the other keysman). The picture is very good, and the camera work/composition is excellent, with nice close-ups and some striking angles where they got both guys in the same shot, Winwood on keys and Clapton on guitar. Some have pointed out editing inconsistencies w/ the visuals, but I didn't really notice it, as I was enjoying the show so much. I listened to the sound in DTS-mode (as opposed to straight 2-channel stereo) and it was excellent - really good mix - much preferable to the CD mix. I guess if you couldn't be there, this DVD (with a good A/V system) is about as close as you can get.
As for the extras on Disc 2, they're good - interviews, some background on Clapton and Winwood's 60's exploits, their time together in Blind Faith, and behind-the-scenes prep for the MSG shows. There are also a couple of bonus cuts, which didn't make the `main' concert as presented on Disc 1 - I noticed in spots, there were synch problems (from watching the drummer) between audio and video, but the extra cuts are nonetheless good (including a 7 minute "Crossroads"). Overall, the disc set was definitely worth the dough, and if you're a fan of either Clapton or Winwood, and have any inclination to buy this, then absolutely do so. You won't be disappointed.

Eric Clapton - Unplugged (1992) ReviewWhat does it mean to be a musician? I love music of many kinds but unfortunately for me I don't understand its structure, and so I can't seem to figure out how to play. I am a person who constantly has a song running through his head, I breathe in time to music, so music is very much a part of me. That's why it's fortunate for all of us who don't play that there are musicians like Eric Clapton.
Ever since this disc was recorded not too long after the death of his son, Clapton has done some work that is "uneven" as the critics would say. It's like the Monty Python Contractual Obligation Album - I did it because I had to. He cranks out a lot of albums so it's natural - given that volume - that some will not be stellar quality.
Not the case here. In these songs, you see Clapton's heart laid bare. There's "Tears in Heaven" - the song dedicated to his son who was killed in a tragic fall from a terrace in a high rise apartment building, an acoustic version of "Layla" that will surprise you with its appeal given the difference from the famous one you're already familiar with, there are several Robert Johnson tunes - from Clapton's idol and major influence, and some other songs that all just blend together like threads in a colorful fabric. Nothing seems out of place: the choice of songs, their sequence, the backup musicians... This overall character gives this DVD a certain listenable quality that makes you drag it out and throw it in fairly often. I can't seem to tire of it.
At the time it came out, I was designing and selling high end Home Theatre and Music systems, and after hearing and seeing this disc at a Custom Electronic Design And Installation (CEDIA) convention, I picked up a copy to use in demonstrations for my clients. Every time I played it, the people stopped kind of "going through the motions" in the demo and were grabbed by what they were hearing ...and seeing.
The whole MTV Unplugged is an intimate series where you're closer to the music (as it's all acoustic) and closer to the musicians, too. Here you get it all - the Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack is clean and tight with a rich undertone throughout. The instruments sound warm. The camera angles and the choice of shots allow you to really feel and appreciate the talent you're witnessing here not only in Eric Clapton but in the carefully chosen musicians for this session. Chuck Lovell on piano is a standout among them. Remember the "Clapton is God" era back in England? Well, Mr. Clapton may not be God exactly but his playing is divine... always.
That's what makes this disc special out of all the others similar to it that you might own. While Clapton is always extraordinary in his technique and in display of his technical skills, on this disc he seems to be most comfortable with the venue, the style of play, the song list, and with his motivation. It's like he's trying to reach us and show us what this kind of music is all about, show us its heart and soul.
Isn't that what a musician is supposed to do?Eric Clapton - Unplugged (1992) OverviewEric Clapton-Unplugged was recorded at Bray Studios in London and features Clapton on acoustic guitar performing fourteen songs including "Signe," "Before You Accuse Me," "Hey Hey," "Tears in Heaven," Lonely Stranger," "Nobody Knows You When Youre Down & Out," "Layla," "Running on Faith," "Walkin Blues," "Alberta," "San Francisco Bay Blues," "Malted Milk," "Old Love" and "Rollin &Tumblin."Video Format: Standard 1.33:1 (4.3)English: Dolby Digital SurroundClosed Captioning: No# Discs: 1Running time of 70 minutes; Closed Captioned. Eric Clapton - Live in Hyde Park (1997) ReviewThis is Eric Clapton at his best. EC has not played with this much fire and intensity since the 70's, including his Derek And The Domino's days. His guitar playing is absolutely FEROCIOUS...which probably shouldn't come as a big surprise, as this concert took place during his 'Back To The Cradle' period, his most convincing and inspired studio album in ages.
The sound quality on this DVD is superb. As it should be, because the incredible TONES Clapton coaxes out of his guitar and amp are that which most guitar players would kill for.
The image quality is also outstanding, very clear and sharp. The camera work is great, with LOTS of closeups of EC and his guitar during the solos, which is an added treat for guitar junkies (myself included.)
For my money, this is the BEST Eric Clapton concert film available. If you're an Eric Clapton fan, this DVD is the one to get.
(NOTE: The DVD edition contains two songs not included on the VHS version: smoldering renditions of "Hoochie Coochie Man" and "It Hurts Me Too".)
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Eric Clapton: Crossroads Guitar Festival 2004 ReviewGreat DVD. Fantastic music by some of the world's best! Eric put together many styles so there is something here for every guitar fan. Contains several mini interviews with players and friends. This one is the first in the series (see also 2007 and 2010) and I believe contains the best music of the three. Also, again different from the subsequent two, there is no emcee; the music just sort of transitions from artist to artist.
