Guitar Freakout / Wild Things ReviewI wonder how many garage band guitarists learned these songs by listening to these two albums? Well, thanks be to the Japanese for conferring god-like status upon the Ventures; otherwise these albums may never have found their way back into print in America. Like all Ventures albums, these two are partly cheese & partly raveup, featuring great songs, not-so-great songs & the interchangeble Ventures originals we enjoy so much (they often recycled them with new titles). Clean, professional, good background music for writers & artists. Of course, the real game is still in collecting the Ventures on vinyl. Highly recommended: Ventures in Space, also available on CD.

The Ventures' Christmas Album Reviewi ordered this from amazon and am just now giving it my second listen through ... nothing quite puts you in that xmas spirit like "walk, don't run," blending into "sleigh bells." (unless it's james brown's, "santa claus, go straight to the ghetto.")
everything that every reviewer said here is on the mark. if you're familiar with instrumental surf, this album is simply a *must*. if you're intimate with the ventures, i challenge to listen to this album and not laugh out loud at least once.
the ONLY reason i ding it a star is it clocks in at 27 minutes. say what? even in the vinyl days this would be considered a short board on the big wave of music.
so yeah, maybe the original was just that long, but hey, the publisher could've put *something* else on that space ... other ventures, other surf band xmas songs, a 2-fer with something cool, dick dale's "hava nagila," SOMEthin' ...The Ventures' Christmas Album Overview

Guitar Christmas ReviewWell, each year I bought Christmas records, and it keeps for over 5 years, collecting and listening to them fills my heart always. Now I own over 300 Christmas CDs, mainly from 40s to 70s. Of them, I found Booker T and MG's "In the Christmas Spirit" and the Venture's are adorable to me the most. To be noted here, I wanna say is not about how great this CD is, but that in fact, this CD is just a reissue under another new title, the original "Christmas Joy." Funny? yeah, you got it! If you do not mind how and what this great CD is called, buy it! It is of course for the reason that this "Guitar Christmas" is cheaper than "Christmas Joy" album, but, the most important, you can still gain equal fun in this great stuff.Guitar Christmas Overview

In Between Dreams Reviewit it was possible, i would have given this cd 6 stars... it's been on constant repeat in the background ever since i got this cd the day it came out (i pre-ordered it as soon as i heard word of a new jack johnson cd...gasp!)
i have liked jack for several years, ever since his debut album "brushfire fairytales." since then, he's also come out with "on and on," (making this his 3rd) and i honestly would never be able to choose my favorite. he's got a soothing, raspy voice and perfectly harmonizing guitar, and he has such a way with words: he doesn't just write about love (although his love songs will make your heart flutter!) but he also writes about worldly issues that get you thinking.
back to this new cd... wow. if you can't tell by now... i HIGHLY recommend it; it's one of those cds that's good the very first time you listen to it. highlights are "better together," (the tune is infectious and his voice is dreamy) "banana pancakes" (because it's such a cute concept and such a rainy summer day anthem) and "sitting waiting wishing" (which i got addicted to before the release of the cd; the video can be seen on his website, www.jackjohnsonmusic.com)
DEFINITELY buy it... you won't regret itIn Between Dreams Overview"In Between Dreams" is the multi-platinum selling smash from Jack Johnson. The album features classics like "Banana Pancakes", "Better Together" and "Good People".

50 Golden Greats ReviewIn the early sixties, instrumental hits were a regular feature of the pop charts in Britain and America. There were several great instrumental artists around. America had Duane Eddy, Floyd Cramer, B Bumble and the Stingers and the Ventures, to name a few. Britain had the Shadows and the Tornados. While the Tornados were very successful at the time, most notably with Telstar, the Shadows remained successful for the rest of the century.
The Shadows were also Cliff Richard's backing band and played on most of his hits in the fifties and sixties. Like Cliff, they made little impact in America but any Americans who enjoy the Ventures and Duane Eddy ought to give the Shadows a listen.
This compilation has all their big UK instrumental hits of the sixties and seventies including Apache, Man of mystery, FBI, Wonderful land, Dance on, Foot tapper and Don't cry for me Argentina. They also experimenting by doing a few vocal tracks and some of those are included here, among them being Mary Anne (a UK top ten hit), Don't make my blue, I met a girl, Dreams I dream and Let me be the one (their 1975 Eurovision song - like so many other Brits, they came second). The vocal tracks are good but it is their instrumental skills on which their reputation is built.
Most of their big hits came early in their career. In the eighties and nineties, they gave up worrying about hits and contented themselves with making albums of cover versions. A few covers selected from these albums round off this excellent collection. Among them is Albatross, an early Fleetwood Mac tune that always sounded very like a Shadows track, so it was an obvious tune for them to cover.
The Shadows, like most pop groups, has had its share of line-up changes. Hank Marvin and Bruce Welch , two of the original members, remained with the group throughout. The other two original members, Jet Harris and Tony Meehan, left early on, They teamed up as a duo and had some UK hits of their own including Diamonds. Of the other members that came and went, John Farrar is perhaps the most famous. He joined in 1970 but eventually had to leave because of other commitments - he became producer and songwriter for Olivia Newton John.
If you enjoy guitar instrumental music of the sixties, you'll love the Shadows. This compilation contains all the essentials, though a lot of Shadows music is available on CD for those who wish to explore further.50 Golden Greats Overview

Guitar in Orbit ReviewI would highly recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys instrumental guitar based music. There is a lot of variety here. The line up of musicians is very good, some really nice sax playing in particular. It is very upbeat generally, and the guitar player is very talented. You can tell he has some jazz training so it is a nice blend of rock, jazz etc.
I have listened to it three times in a row and I'm sure I'll be listening to it regularly. I was unfamiliar with this group, purchased it from the sound samples only, and I'm very very satisfied. Enjoy!!!Guitar in Orbit Overview

Ventures Play Greatest Surfing Hits of All Time ReviewFor those of you who thought that this CD was a repackaging of songs recorded in the sixties, let me set the record straight. "Surfin' And Spyin' " was recorded by the Ventures in 1981, and all of the remaining tracks were recorded between 1996 and 2000. For those of you who thought that the Ventures might have lost something with age, let me set your mind at ease. "Walk Don't Run '64" starts the CD off on a strong note, and the music never falters from first song to last. A particular standout is "Baja" from 1996, featuring Don Wilson, Bob Bogle, Gerry McGee and Mel Taylor. "Diamond Head" and "Pipeline" are outstanding surf instrumentals. Those versions were recorded with original member Nokie Edwards instead of Gerry McGee on guitar, and with Leon Taylor replacing his late father Mel on drums. "Surf Rider," written by Nokie Edwards but here credited to Wilson/Bogle, is alone worth the price of the CD. Voting members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame should buy this CD. I guarantee after one listen, they would vote to induct the Ventures immediately!Ventures Play Greatest Surfing Hits of All Time OverviewThis all-new collection features new versions of their biggest hits plus covers of other great surfing songs. Includes Walk Don't Run; Penetration; Mr. Moto; Out of Limits; Lonely Surfer; Baja; Let's Go; Diamond Head; Pipeline; Slaughter on 10th Avenue; Bombora , and more.

Songxpress: Classic Surf Guitar 1 (1999) ReviewI can't believe this things has gotten ANY good reviews.
Okay, it's a decently made video, alright presentation, easy to pick up on the licks, the on-screen tablature is great...
BUT I never got past Misirlou (the first song on the tape) because... it's not Misirlou. The video instructs you to play the song in the wrong SCALE. If you listen to a Dick Dale recording of this song and then watch the tape, you will laugh yourself off your stool.
It's wrong. You can find a tab transcription book with this song and see for yourself that it's wrong.
[opening lick actual notes: bottom string 0,1,4,5,7,8,11,8,7 and on the video: 0,3,4,5,7,10,11,8]
Waste of ten bucks.Songxpress: Classic Surf Guitar 1 (1999) Overview

Surf Sensation ReviewI had to savor the content of this cd for a couple months before reviewing it. One thing for certain- you don't need to be living in California circa early 1960's to write/perform great surf music. The boys from Montreal are no exception in "Surf Sensation". Tracks such as Kung Fu Saturdays"," Breakers at Hanalei","The Last Papaya","Distant Shores", and "Cabo Del Cabo" are amongst my favorites. Excellent guitar melodies throughout accented with tasty trem picking, trem dives, muted arpegios, with the manditory drenching of Fender reverb! I don't proclaim you'll like all 33 tracks; you have to listen in order for them to grow on you. No words in the music to anoy or offend you. Surf Music-it's a good thing, very cool, and the Meltones/Surf Sensation is all that!!!Surf Sensation OverviewInstrumental surf guitar with a twang.33 songs featured prominently in Nickelodeon's SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS

Play Greatest Instrumental Hits of All Time ReviewEvery cut on this disc is dead on perfect! The Ventures have a sound which is timeless and very much their own. Covering some of the best rock instrumentals of all time, the guys sound great on this album. This is the way rock/guitar instrumentals should sound! I've always liked their version of Tequilla, and they don't disappoint here. Hawaii Five 0 sounds as fresh here as it did when it first came out. Put this disc in and you'll be taken back to when rock was FUN and made you feel good. Why in the world these amazing guys aren't in the rock hall of fame is a question for the ages. And, if they ever tour in your area, do ANYTHING to get tickets - saw them in NYC a few years back and they just blew the roof off the place, great music and great showmen! If you love great rock, buy this disc!Play Greatest Instrumental Hits of All Time Overview

Play Telstar & Ventures in Space ReviewI admit it. I am a Ventures nerd! Two of their finer albums on one CD is hard to miss. Their covers are better than the originals as evident by "Out Of Limits" (Marketts)and "Telstar" (Tornados0. Their rendition of "Penetration" is excellent the the effect of their maturing productios are evident here.("Penetration" originally done my The Pyramids).
Herb Alpert's "The Lonely Bull" is well done here and they make it there own. "Apache" is a classic, and many people learned to play guitar by using this record, (It latter appeared on "Play Guitar With The Ventures")
"The Ventures In Space" starts the period in which the Ventures put out album after album of pure magic, with the use of Mosrite Guitars always showcased, and the "Fuzz Bass" lines took hold. Songs like "Tequila" and "Solar Race" are Venture classics.
This group was integral to music in the sixties, with many artists directly affected by their music. This is a worthy addition to any collection, and is way ahead of its time. I still have the original Dolton LP's in Vinyl, but these CD's are excellent up-issues. Mandatory for any Ventures Fan,Play Telstar & Ventures in Space Overview

Dick Dale & His Deltones - Greatest Hits 1961-1976 ReviewI bought this CD for the songs from Dick's "Checkered flag" album, his 1964 Capitol recording, that are not on some of the other Dick Dale compilations. There are a lot of great songs on this album, but I want to warn people that some of the songs on this CD are not the originals (Misirlou, The Victor, Surf Beat, Mr. Peppermint Man, The Wedge, Let's Go Trippin', King Of The Surf Guitar), but are re-recordings from the GNP Crescendo sessions produced by Jim Pewter in 1975. These re-recordings are OK, but they do not have the energy that the originals found on other compilations have. Jim Pewter himself wrote "Those Memories Of You" and this is probably the worst song on the CD. There are also some songs with vocals, mostly from the "Checkered flag" album. One of the songs recorded at the GNP Crescendo sessions, "Peter Gunn," is really good.Dick Dale & His Deltones - Greatest Hits 1961-1976 Overview

Lost Legends of Surf Guitar 2: Point Panic ReviewSundazed Records put a lot of time and effort into their surf guitar series. Although six of the twenty songs in this volume are hot rod instrumentals, they sound right at home among the obscure and previously unreleased surf instrumentals included in this collection. Jerry Cole And His Spacemen perform "Point Panic" as well as the Surfaris originally did. The Trashmen turn in a very good rendition of the Ventures' hit "Walk, Don't Run." "The Gremmie, Part 1" by the Tornadoes is a humorous song about beginning surfers. The Catalinas were a studio supergroup that consisted of guitarists Tommy Tedesco, Billy Strange and Jerry Cole, saxophonist Steve Douglas, and drummer Hal Blaine, with both Leon Russell and Bruce Johnston on piano! Their song "Banzai Washout" alone is worth the price of this CD.Lost Legends of Surf Guitar 2: Point Panic Overview

Lost Legends of Surf Guitar 1: Big Noise From ReviewI think of all the times I've run across what I call "The Lost Syndrome," ie compilations of lost music by forgotten bands. These compilations often consist of mediocre garage bands performing forgettable tunes, lost tracks by legendary bands who probably wish the songs could stay lost, or so-so live covers of classic tunes. There might be a track or two of gems, but the bulk of these collections are fool's gold!
However, you do come across the occasional exception.
The first volume of "Lost Legends of Surf Guitar" is the most amazing exception to the "Lost Syndrome." I'm a surf music admirer who is approaching the cusp of being a rabid surf music fanatic, and have heard other "Lost Surf Music" collections with tepid covers of Miserlou, Pipeline and the likes. This collection is such a stark contrast. Sundazed Studios have produced a clean sweep of 20 surf guitar tunes that are all excellent!
You see a few familar names like The Pyramids, The Centurions, and The Original Surfaris ("original" as compared to The Surfaris that surf music aficionados are familiar with---the CD's liner notes give a brief explanation of the legal battle between two bands who used the same name). But the most surprising treasures are the way-rad tunes by obscure groups who are forgotten by all but the ultra-surf fanaticos!
The tune that stole me is "The Jester" by...The Jesters! The Jesters begin the tune with a cackling giggle ala "Wipe-Out" before going into an exotic guitar tune that has mix of melody and that "Super-Sleuth" mood that you would hear in surf classics like "Mr. Moto."
You really get a fantastic variety of songs here from the Halloween essence of "Cemetary Stomp" by "The Essex" to the peppy "El Gato" by The Chandelle's to The Royal Coachmen's moody "Repeating." The sharp sound quality on these tunes is every bit as surprising as the quality of the music itself!
While I would like to sum up "Lost Legends" with an articulate conclusion, the only way I can do it justice is to exclaim "BUY THIS CD!" Seriously, this is absolutely the finest compilation of surf music I have ever seen, and I cannot remember the last time I was this pleasantly surprised to find an exception to "Lost Syndrome!" The producers of this album get my highest fanboy salute!Lost Legends of Surf Guitar 1: Big Noise From Overview
