Cool Yule ReviewThis is one incredible Christmas CD from Bette Midler. Bette's first Christmas album is full of great renditions of the standards of this time of year including "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas;" "Ill Be Home For Christmas;" "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?;" "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" and "White Christmas." Bette throws in a lot of her own pizzazz and wonderful eggnog with a new song "Cool Yule" and she does a wonderful duet with Johnny Mathis as they perform "Winter Wonderland/Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!" Terrific!
The CD opens strong with "Merry Christmas." This song boasts a great musical arrangement and Bette's voice is in excellent form--as it is throughout this album! Then the CD shifts gears and revs up the motors a little bit with "Cool Yule." This song, written by Steve Allen with additional lyrics by Eric Kornfeld, is a lot of fun and you'll be eager to listen to it again and again!
Another fun song on this CD is "Mele Kalikimaka." This is how to say "Merry Christmas" in Hawaiian; this adds a very personal touch to the CD because Bette was born in the state of Hawaii. It offers a great musical composition that starts off with a brief romantic flavor and then twists into a very catchy tune! Could this be a new classic in the making? I think this song will become increasingly popular with time as it is very well written and Bette does a great job with it. The numerous background vocalists are wonderful as well.
Bette Midler fans will recognize the special Christmas version of "From A Distance." It is touching as it was when it was first released and it remains just as relevant today as it was when it was first released in 1990. Newcomers will enjoy this special song as well.
I especially like how Bette masterfully handles the romantic, sentimental lyrics of "I'll Be Home For Christmas" as well as "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?" Bette breathes new life into these standards with her beautiful voice, energy and passion.
The quality of the sound is excellent even on a portable CD player. The liner notes are wonderful, too. There are nice photos of Bette both in the liner notes and on the back of the CD artwork, too. You get the song credits and there's a well written essay by Jay Landers. Nice!
Overall, I would recommend this CD for Bette Midler fans and anyone who appreciates beautifully arranged Christmas music. Bette's voice has never sounded better and I applaud her fine efforts to make her first Christmas CD a splendid reality. "Mele Kalikimaka" to you!SMILES

Brad Paisley Christmas ReviewPrime Cuts: Penguin, James Penguin, Santa Looked A lot Like Daddy, I'll Be Home for Christmas
Santa's secret spies, confronting Christmas addictive withdrawals, and daddy playing dress-ups: these are sacred totems associated with the yuletide for Brad Paisley. While many a Christmas CD offers punctilious readings of traditional carols stuck in a mire of saccharine sentimentality, Paisley's debut holiday effort shows personality. Ingenuity and his ingrained humor get the upper hand as this country superstar revels in the frolicsome candor of the festive season. However, not all is frivolous fun, on certain tracks Paisley does essay the lofty message of Christmas and its sentiments via some of most timely formidable carols of yore performed with a romantic valor and thoughtful impeccability. Though this is a seasonal detour, stylistically "A Brad Paisley Christmas" does not sidestep too far away from Paisley's typical country outings. Just as his albums has never been monolithic; a bit of everything represented on this CD: from romantic lush ballads, to spitfire honk tonk to revved up rock to an instrumental as well as a few nods to Paisley's comical side.
The more interesting tracks here are the originals, of which there are four. Paisley ups the ante on his narrative skills on the jovial narrative about Santa's secret spy that goes by the moniker "Penguin, James Penguin." Told with a tickle of cheekiness, "Penguin, James Penguin" ought to add Christmas cheer to kids as well as bring a seasonal smile to adults. Much less colorful is the laconic "364 Days to Go" a wry cynical bluesy-ballad about the obsessive entanglements of the holidays. Sharing the microphone again with the Paisley-created the Kung Pao Buckaroos -- otherwise known as Little Jimmy Dickens, George Jones, and Bill Anderson -"Kung Pao Holidays" is a satire of the notion of "political correctness" basked by a comedic sonic veneer. On a much sober and traditional tenor, "Born on Christmas Day" features Paisley when he was 13 years old trading verses with himself (towards the end) on a self-penned Southern-Gospel-like ballad detailing the story of Christ's birth.
Even when Paisley delves into the traditional canon of yuletide favorites, he is not content to offer a straight reading. Listen especially to the lyrical changes to "Santa Looked A Lot like Daddy" for his personal augmentation that brings out another humorous dimension. While on "I'll Be Home For Christmas," co-producer Frank Rogers and Paisley himself, went all the way to provide a dreamy string-laden backing, thus creating one of the most romantic renditions since Tony Bennett's rendition. On the other hand, the reverent singing of "Silent Night" is a tad on the dull side. This is only redeemed by "Away in a Manger" which receives a revved up honky tonk treatment. Though guitar accolades may find much to celebrate over the instrumental "Jingle Bells," it does nothing to the musically illiterate.
As far as Christmas CDs go, "Brad Paisley's Christmas" strikes a balance between the season's sacred as well as its more jovial side. Yet most winsome is that Paisley's at home in both turfs. Whether he delves into the spiritual message of the importance of Christ's birth or just cracking jokes with the Kung Pao Buckaroos over appropriate language in holiday tunes, Paisley sounds at ease. If there's a pickle to pick, it's that the album has too few tracks. Nevertheless, with Paisley displaying his colorful personality throughout the CD, there's not a dull moment during Brad Paisley's Christmas.Brad Paisley Christmas Overview

A Winter's Solstice II ReviewAfter all the years and all the Winter Solstice/Carols of Christmas?Windham Hill Christmas compilations, this is the one I always come back to. It has the most original material, and because of that, it is one of the few Winter Solstice albums you can honestly listen to in July or January or December. Brilliant improvisations by Philip Aaberg begin, and end this disc. One of Ackerman's awesome harp-guitar pieces, a piece by Barbara Higbee which is one of the only I've heard of her flute performances. And the most poignant moments of all - Fred Simon's Simple Psalm. Very moving piano work, complete with chime effects. Simply awesome. There is literally not a single boring or predictable track on this CD; it is a true masterpiece of astonishingly consistent talent all throughout. Yes the first "Winter Solstice" was very good, but this was actually far beyond perfect. Ravishing tone and impeccable phrasing.Land of Enchantment OverviewI grew up playing rock music and surfing, and came to classical music at the late age of 18. My girlfriend was heading off to Florida State University to study art, and made it clear that if I wanted to stay with her, I would also become a FSU student. At FSU the only guitar offered then, was classical guitar. So I began a 20 year dedication to the discipline and martyrdom of classical music. I loved it and devoted all of my energy to it.In the mid-90s I found my self totally burned out. Acoustic Christmas ReviewThis is a wonderful, eclectic mix of accoustic interpretations of holiday music. It's become a favorite of my in the last 10 years and is worth owning just for Shawn Colvin's rendition of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and Judy Collins's version of "The Little Road to Bethlehem." Only dull spot is The Hooters doing "Silent Night," which sounds like they gave it all of 5 minutes of thought. Otherwise, a fine disc for holiday listening.Acoustic Christmas Overview

Come Darkness Come Light: Twelve Songs of Christmas ReviewAll I can say is, WOW. This is one fantastic album.
First and foremost, this is a Mary Chapin Carpenter album, not a Christmas album. While the theme of the songs may be Christmas and holiday, it's an album I'll be listening to year 'round.
One of the great things about this album is that the majority of the material is not what you'd call "traditional" Christmas songs. Only three of the songs fall into the "traditional" category -- "Once In Royal David's City," "Still, Still, Still" and "Children, Go Where I Send Thee." And I can't name very many albums by popular artists that have included any of these three songs.
The rest of the material is "new" (meaning original songs written in the last couple of decades). Tommy Thompson's "Hot Buttered Rum" and Robin & Linda Williams' "On a Quiet Christmas Morn" are two of these "new" songs. Most of the rest of the songs were written by Mary Chapin Carpenter herself ("Christmas Time In the City" and "Bells Are Ringing" were co-written by MCC with John Jennings).
For me, the most fascinating inclusion on this album is John Rutter's "Candlelight Carol." I know this as a choral piece, and it's one of John Rutter's most melodic choral pieces. Mary Chapin Carpenter's version is simply superb, driving the duple meter while keeping the lullaby feel of the song.
Most MCC fans will recognize "Christmas Time In the City" and "Bells Are Ringing" -- both were previously released on various-artist Christmas compilations. But the versions on this CD are entirely new -- new acoustic arrangements, new vocals, and, in the case of "Christmas Time In the City," some new lyrics.
As far as the production of this album, this is bare-bones Mary Chapin Carpenter. She herself handles the vocals and some acoustic guitar, and John Jennings and Jon Carroll provide all the other instrumentation. That's it. Mary Chapin Carpenter even did the photography for the CD booklet, all photos of her own farm. The sum of this is an album that feels like a very personal Christmas gift, created especially for you.
So to all you Mary Chapin Carpenter fans out there, to all you who like Christmas music, to anyone who likes singer-songwriters of any sort: BUY THIS CD! Even if you don't like Christmas music, you'll like this album. Trust me. Not a "Silent Night" or "White Christmas" in sight!
All that being said, if you go to iTunes, you can download a bonus track -- a "traditional" Christmas song, nonetheless. "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" is available there as the thirteenth song of Christmas. Thankfully, it's available to download as an individual track, so you don't have to download the whole album to get that one song. It's a lovely performance, and I'm glad I have it, but I'm also glad they chose not to include it on the CD, as it just doesn't fit...Come Darkness Come Light: Twelve Songs of Christmas Overview

Glory in the Highest: Christmas Songs of Worship ReviewI believe that what makes this album strong for some is what makes it weak for others. I see these following components as strengths:
1. Focus on worship rather than nostalgia
2. Introducing new songs to the Church and revamping old ones
3. Doing something simple, yet profound, that will lead other worship leaders to do the same (eg slowing down and quietening down "O Holy Night", much the same as Tomlin did with "I stand amazed in the presence (How Marvelous)")
4. Making this accessible and possible to replicate in the worship setting
5. The live nature of the album
6. Introducing new worship leaders to the Christian community (this is one of Tomlin's strengths - virtually every record of his he introduces a new worship song / leader, eg Laura Story (Indescribable), Bluetree (God of this City))
7. Understanding that power can be found often in the absence of noise (hence the acapella singing etc)
Other than Andrew Peterson's "Behold the Lamb of God" (which is phenomenal), this is perhaps the second most powerful and consistent Christmas worship CD I know. Having said that, I've just started listening to Sovereign Grace Ministries' "Savior" and think that might be up there too. Oh, and Graham Kendrick's "Dreaming of a Holy Night"

Songs for Christmas ReviewFor some years now, Sufjan Stevens has been recording little EPs of Christmas songs for people he knew, to "make himself appreciate Christmas more."
Now thankfully he's sharing these songs with his eager listeners, in a five-disc collection that includes his folky reinterpretations of classic carols -- and then the festive ones he made himself. This is not the treacly garbage they put on the radio or in malls -- this is enchanting, festive, fresh music for the holidays.
The first EP -- recorded in 2001 -- is very much old-school Sufjan. Much folkier and banjoey, especially in the lo-fi "O Come O Come Emmanuel," folksy little songs about going to the country, and "Amazing Grace." But there are exceptions -- a shimmering reinterpration of an old hymn, and some bouncy sleigh bell pop.
But the collection blossoms with the sparkling "Angels We Have Heard on High," which is the lead-in to his more polished style. In the four EPs that follow, Sufjan flourishes out into synthy pop, xylophone tunes, dancey holiday music, mellow folk, and exquisite piano balladry. There's the occasional banjo tune, but they grow rarer as time goes on.
And as the collection moves forward, Stevens' music becomes more accomplished with each passing year. His music becomes more complex and more enchanting, right up to the rather pensive and downbeat fifth disc -- which is album-length -- with the shimmering piano of "Winter Solstice" and the offbeat synthpop of "Jupiter Winter."
Sufjan does repeat himself occasionally -- there are multiple versions of "O Come O Come Emmanual," "Lo! A Rose E'er Blooming," and "Once in Royal David's City." Fortunately each time he records the same song, it's radically reimagined. And even songs that most people are heartily sick of -- like "Jingle Bells" -- lose that appalling shopping-mall feeling when Sufjan plays them.
As well as the traditionals and classics, Sufjan injects a lot of his own songs. He makes a festive mishmash of instrumentals -- Hammond, guitar, a little flute, banjo, and lots and lots of bells! Lyrically this is right up his street. He can switch effortlessly from "K-Mart is closed/So is the bakery" to singing about the little Lord Jesus laying down his head in a manger.
And Stevens isn't afraid to look at the side of Christmas that isn't filled with love, joy and goodwill ("Our father yells/Throwing gifts in the wood stove... Silent night/Nothing feels right"). But then, he also has whimsical pop tunes like "Come On! Let's Boogey to the Elf Dance!" which is suitably jolly for the holidays. Not to mention the sweetly romantic side as well ("I might kiss you on the back of your neck/Because it's Christmas time."
Sufjan Stevens is in excellent form with his collection of Christmas tunes. Old songs get a new spin, and new songs are absolutely enchanting in his psychfolky way. Now that it's Christmas time...Songs for Christmas OverviewIn December 2001, Sufjan set out to create a Christmas gift for his friends and family. The result was a seven-song recording that he called "Noel Vol. 1". Over the next several years, he created new EPs to add to the collection. This 5-CD box set includes all five volumes, plus a 42-page booklet with an original Christmas essay by acclaimed American novelist Ricky Moody, two essays, a short story by Stevens, a holiday sticker, chord charts, lyrics, comic strip, family portrait poster, photos, and an animated video.

Windham Hill Holiday Guitar Collection ReviewI have collected every Windham Hill Christmas album back to Winter's Solstice I. As with every holiday season, I looked forward to Windham Hill's latest collection. But this year's version is a total ripoff. It is merely a recylced collection of songs from previous Windham Hill Christmas CD's that I already own. Even though the cover says "Windham Hill presents a new collection of timeless Christmas favorites," every song was on a previous Christmas or Winter's Solstice CD. If Windham Hill had practiced truth in advertising I would have never forked out $19 for a bunch of songs I already have!!! Songs, Hymns & Carols ReviewThank goodness I found this on CD at last! I've had it on cassette for years. This is a wonderful guitar instrumental of classic Christmas songs, featuring up to eight guitars. The arrangements are well done, and the styling superb. This is one you won't get tired of.Songs, Hymns & Carols OverviewThis is Lewis Ross' second collection of acoustic guitar instrumentals for Christmas, and it is a body of acoustic guitar music as enjoyable and full of good cheer as the first. For those of you who have heard "A Collection of Favourite Christmas Carols", this will be welcome news. On nine of these pieces, Mr. Ross masquerades as the New American Guitar Ensemble by recording each arrangement one part at a time to create the ensemble sound. The other five pieces are duets with his good friend and well known guitarist, Rick Ruskin. Included inside the CD are detailed notes on each of the Songs, Hymns and Carols in this collection.

Wintersong ReviewYes, yes, I know what you're thinking: "Oh, it's just another Christmas album". Many of you are also probably complaining that Sarah isn't releasing a new studio album of original material. I know this because I was just the same way until I first heard River on Sarah's Myspace page. Then I was like "wow...maybe this Christmas album will be different". And it certainly is. The album is a mix of traditional (yet not overly ubiquitous) Christmas songs and some more modern holiday hits (such as John Lennon's "Happy Xmas (War is Over)" and Joni Mitchell's "River"). It makes for a very interesting listen. Usually I am extremely bored by popular artists doing Christmas albums and I generally hate them, but I just couldn't say no to this one. With Sarah's voice adding new nuances and a breath of fresh air to these familiar tunes, this album is more than worth the price of admission.
I think the most gorgeous part of the album is the beginning of The First Noel/Mary Mary where Sarah busts out her beautifully trained voice, Touch-style (if you know what I mean). Her voice is as silky, smooth, and stunning on this album as it always has been. She has certainly lost none of her vocal range over the years, which is amazing. The selection of the songs is very Sarah-like and thankfully none of the "happy happy joy joy" type of Christmas carols such as Deck the Halls or Joy to the World are to be found here. All of the songs have a sort of longing and melancholy to them that Sarah is known for. The songs have been specifically chosen to really show the silent, almost bittersweet side of Christmas. The melodies of the songs chosen also reflect this sort of sad quality that fits Sarah's voice so well. The production by her longtime producer Pierre Marchand is a bit experimental, heavy, and very reminiscent of Sarah's original material, so it still feels very "Sarah".
I'd have to say that the standout tracks for me were River, Wintersong (the new title song that Sarah McLachlan penned herself, which brims over with simplicity and beautiful emotion), and Song For a Winter's Night which had actually been previously available on her Rarities, B-sides, and Other Stuff album. I was really touched by this album as a whole and it got me into the Christmas spirit way earlier than usual. I'll definitely be playing this album while drinking some hot cocoa on Christmas Eve. It's definitely an album that breaks the mold of the typical "Christmas album" and I would encourage everyone to go buy this if you're sick of being disappointed by other artists' attempts at covering holiday songs. If you're already a fan of Sarah's, then this is a no-brainer. These recordings are not simply traditional holiday fare. Instead, Winstersong could be considered the soundtrack to a blustery winter day. The album opens with her version of John Lennon's timeless declaration of peace from 1971, "Happy Xmas (War is Over)." John and Yoko and the Plastic Ono Band originally recorded the song with the Harlem Community Choir, and Sarah is also joined by a choral group -- a children's choir of students from the music school she personally funds and oversees in her hometown of Vancouver. Another highlight of the new album is Sarah's version of "River" from Joni Mitchell's 1971 Blue album ("It's coming on Christmas, they're cutting down trees..."). The title track Wintersong was written by Sarah specifically for this album. On this recording, she also pays homage to Gordon Lightfoot with his 1975 "Song For A Winter's Night." From the American standard songbook, Sarah has chosen "I'll Be Home For Christmas" and "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas." The program is rounded out with the traditional "What Child Is This (Greensleeves)," "O Little Town of Bethlehem," "Silent Night," the classically flavored "In A Bleak Mid Winter," and a medley of "The First Noel/ Mary Mary." In addition, Wintersong features guest appearances from Diana Krall on piano on "Christmas Time Is Here" from the 1965 Charlie Brown Christmas cartoon and fellow Canadian Jim Creegan of Barenaked Ladies guests on double bass throughout the album.

Ultimate Classical Christmas Album of All Time ReviewIf you love Christmas as much as I do, you will probably enjoy this album. It features plenty of standard favorites - especially sung by the MoTab, who seem to be a holiday staple. I probably wouldn't pay $17.95 just to hear songs like 'The Little Drummer Boy' of 'We Wish You a Merry Christmas.'
What makes this compillation interesting is the liberal sprinkling of less traditional - or, anyway, less well-known - classical pieces. Vivaldi's 'Gloria', Corelli's 'Christmas Concerto', and the opera 'Hansel and Gretel' all make an appearance. The standout, in my mind, is the ethereally beautiful 'Watt's Cradle Hymn,' which I have never seen or heard anywhere else - that one song alone makes this album worth a listen.Ultimate Classical Christmas Album of All Time Overview
