A Winter's Solstice II ReviewAfter all the years and all the Winter Solstice/Carols of Christmas?Windham Hill Christmas compilations, this is the one I always come back to. It has the most original material, and because of that, it is one of the few Winter Solstice albums you can honestly listen to in July or January or December. Brilliant improvisations by Philip Aaberg begin, and end this disc. One of Ackerman's awesome harp-guitar pieces, a piece by Barbara Higbee which is one of the only I've heard of her flute performances. And the most poignant moments of all - Fred Simon's Simple Psalm. Very moving piano work, complete with chime effects. Simply awesome. There is literally not a single boring or predictable track on this CD; it is a true masterpiece of astonishingly consistent talent all throughout. Yes the first "Winter Solstice" was very good, but this was actually far beyond perfect. Windham Hill Chill: Ambient Acoustic ReviewThis is really more just a label sampler than a successful "chill" compilation. Windham Hill has put out many excellent collections in the past, most notably the underrated and genre-setting "Path" CD. That was a CD with many new tracks and new artists. It really opened my mind up to some great music. This new "chill" set does a very poor job of backing up the boast from the album's subtitle - "30 essential tracks from the original chill out label."
Start with disc one, the "ambient" disc. So many of the cuts are from previous albums - even from previous W.H. collections! Often this is the 3rd or even 4th compilation appearance for some tunes! Windham Hill is getting like Higher Octave, endlessly re-packaging the same songs over and over. Some of these cuts are not even "ambient." The Ravi Shankar theme is nice enough, but isn't "chill" OR "ambient." It clashes with the other songs on disc one. The piece from Yanni is like watered-down Vangelis. Of course he is from the Tesh school of muzak and doesn't really belong on any compilation looking for credibility anyhow.
The 2nd disc, "acoustic," has some excellent themes from Nightnoise, Will Ackerman, and others. Again, though, many of the songs have been anthologized to death already. If you own just about ANY W.H. compilation, you've probably already got "Rickover's Dream" from Michael Hedges and "Wedding Rain" from Liz Story. Instead of putting out the same music again, it would be much better if Windham Hill would come up with something new for a change.Windham Hill Chill: Ambient Acoustic Overview

Windows: Windham Hill 25 Years of Piano ReviewI always thought that the best way to listen to new age is in compilations. With very few exceptions (like George Winston) this kind of music becomes monotonous and boring after twenty minutes with the same artist. So, I have most of the windham hill compilations, piano, guitars, samplers, vocals, and I like them all. Since piano is one of my favourite instruments I bought this one without hesitation.
What a surprise it was to find that 5 out of these 13 tracks are taken from other samplers by the same label. I understand that this label is not the same it was 15 years ago, it was bought by BMG and they are really trying to cash on this popular and selling music, but we must say to them that this is too much, just way too much! A sampler from samplers, and at full price!
The music is good and if you don't have any windham hill cd, you could start here, although George Winston has some better tracks and there are a few more piano tracks in the windham hill vaults that could be added to a CD that is only 53 minutes long. I guess BMG prefers to do a vol.2 than give you value for your money.
I prefer the 'Piano samplers', vol. 1 and 2, with more tracks and more music to this one. And also the "first Ten years" dbl cd compilation is great. Other windham hills compilations that I recommend are the "Winter solstice", specially vol. 1, 2 and 3. A Windham Hill Christmas ReviewSometimes, you find a cd that speaks to your heart in such a way, that you want everyone to know about it. "A Windham Hill Christmas" is such a cd. Through the years, Windham Hill has provided a peaceful alternative to most traditional-like Christmas music. This is no exception! With this latest Holiday recording (just released this October), various Windham Hill artists have compiled new instrumental arrangements of traditional carols, just for this cd. With a remarkable lineup of talented musicians...George Winston(solo piano), Liz Story(solo piano), Will Ackerman(baritone guitar), David Cullen(guitar), W.G. Snuffy Walden(guitar), Tracy Silverman(violin, electric 6-string violin & keyboards), Thea Suits(flute), Jim Brickman(piano), Steve Erquiaga(nylon-string guitar), Barbara Higbie(Celtic harp, violin, piano & synthesizer), Tim Story(piano & synthesizers), Paul Schwartz(piano), Nightnoise(guitar, piano, flute & violin), Alex de Grassi (solo guitar), Jeff Johnson (keyboards), Brian Dunning(whistles & accordian), John Fitzpatrick(violin) and Paul McCandless(oboe, English horn & keyboards)...how can you go wrong?!? If I had to describe the tone of this recording, it would be: Beautifully Serene! My favorite song is W.G. Snuffy Walden's arrangement of "The First Noel." It is very poignant and moves me tears. It is my favorite Christmas carol. The only flaw, per say, is an error in the sequence of songs. The cd cover list's song #5 as "Chirstmas Is Coming," by George Winston, and song #6 as "The First Noel," by W.G. Snuffy Walden. The actual sequence on the cd is just the opposite, with Walden's song being #5 and Winston's #6. Hey, believe me, it's no biggie. Just a slight mixup. It has no bearing on the quality of the music.
If you're a long time Windham Hill fan, chances are you already have this cd, or are getting ready to purchase it. If this is your first introduction to Windham Hill, you've come to the right place. This will be one of the most peaceful Christmas cd's you could ever own. Makes for wonderful background music while you're wrapping gifts, addressing Christmas cards, or hosting a Holiday get-together. It's especially nice to "cozy up with" by yourself, over a hot cuppa tea or cocoa :-) It sure would make for a nice gift, too. You may also want to check out "The Carol's of Christmas," another instrumental Holiday recording from The Windham Hill Collection, and another favorite of mine.
I predict "A Windham Hill Christmas" will be one of this Season's bigget sellers and become another Windham Hill
"classic." IT IS THAT BEAUTIFUL!! Do yourself a favor and buy it.

The Carols Of Christmas: A Windham Hill Collection ReviewWith the Holiday's fast approaching, most are looking for some really good Christmas music to buy for themselves or as gifts. Trust me on this, you can't go wrong with "The Carols of Christmas." It's one of my most favorite Christmas cd's (the other being "A Charlie Brown Chritmas: The Music of Vince Guaraldi"). It has become a Holiday classic in our home! With a delicate, yet strong balance, this cd is beyond beautiful! Musically, the sounds vary from solo paino, acoustic guitar & synthesizers to saxaphone, clarinet, harps & percussions - It's totally instrumental. Windham Hill fans, rejoice! George Winston, Will Ackerman, Liz Story, Brian Keane, Jim Brickman, John Boswell, Tracy Silverman, David Darling, etc....it is a holiday sampling of Windham Hills' best. And yes, this would make a great Christmas gift for anyone - I always give a couple each year. Perhaps the best way to describe this compilation is "New Age meets Light Jazz"...and thats a wonderful thing. It will leave you with a soothing, serene excitment for the Holidays. Makes for wonderful background music at any Christmas celebration! West Coast Serenade ReviewWe first stumbled across Brad Prevedoros when we were looking for a musician for our wedding. We liked his sample music so much that we purchased this and other 3 of his other cds. He is an incredible guitarist and his music is both soothing and festive at the same time. Several of our wedding guests purchased this cd after they heard him at our wedding and are enjoying it.
