Christmas Guitar ReviewI love this album. It was the first music I heard by John Fahey and hooked me. Every year I play my christmas album (yes, it's vinyl) and people always ask me who is playing. Popular Songs of Christmas & New Year's (Guitar Instrumentals) ReviewBut you can't blame the guy. He's got to eat just like the rest of us. Back in 1968 he noticed that Christmas records just sell and sell and sell, so he recorded one ("The New Possibility") and wouldn't you know, it became his best seller - not Blind Joe Death, not Railroad, not The Yellow Princess or any of those other masterpieces. So he put out more Christmas albums over the years (I think I count five) and this is the ickiest one of the lot - can you stand "The Skater's Waltz" or "Do You Hear what I Hear"? The music is mostly duets with Terry Robb, and most mellifluous they are too. And I guess guitarists will like the arrangements. The New Possibility: John Fahey's Guitar Soli Christmas Album ReviewBack in the 70's I bought the New Possibility on vinyl and my wife and I couldn't take it off the turntable. It was our first west coast Christmas in Vancouver and just knowing that John Fahey was just down the coast made it feel even better. I realize he has recorded other xmas favorites; but this is by far the best. It's sparse, crisp, simple and beautiful.....all at the same time. I eventually purchased it on CD and then it disappeared from the shelves. Thank God it's back in CD format again! Make this a Christmas gift to yourself.
