Sublime Acoustic: Bradley Nowell & Friends ReviewLet's face it: Sublime had charisma; they had energy; they had it all, but they weren't exactly the tightest band when it came to their live shows. Not that it mattered; Sublime's performances depended upon many things: energy; spontanaeity; and, ultimately, what their audiences gave them in return. But even then, those things didn't elevate the shows to godly heights. Sometimes... well, more than sometimes, Brad was simply off his nut, and all the king's horses and all the king's men couldn't tighten things up as they should have been.
But it doesn't matter now, does it?
Listening to this cd is the musical equivalent of hanging out at a laid back party, having a beer and a b**g-hit, chillin' with your buddies and groovin' to some sweet music brought to you courtesy Bradley Nowell, one of the greater songwriters of the last twenty years. While it's incredibly rich on atmosphere, Brad doesn't exactly nail it in every song. A lot of the time it sounds as though he's already had more to drink or smoke than you have, but hey, again, it doesn't matter, because these last few records from Sublime will serve as the final documents of a superbly brilliant songwriter, the likes of which we won't see again for some time.
Nowell wrote from the heart and he sang his heart at every step. Few singers have shown themselves to be as emotionally direct or as honest as he had been. He wasn't overly preoccupied with finger pointing or rooting out hypocrites as lesser songwriters are apt to do. He was genuine, and he wasn't afraid to wear it on his sleeve, flaws and all.

One Hot Minute ReviewFor best Chili's cd. The two are also in my top ten albums of all time. This is the darkhorse of the Chili's album catalogue and seems to be the one that no one likes. I really don't see why. First of all, contrary to popular belief, Dave Navarro is an absolutely amazing guitarist. However, he gets bashed on because he's not John Frusciante. Why? No one cared that Frusciante wasn't Hillel Slovak! Secondly, people complain that this cd is too repetitive. Why?! This is perhaps one of the most diverse cds the Peppers have ever created. Flea sings on some songs including a solo piece. A New guitar player. Music borrowed from almost every genre and capitalized on. This cd spans alternative ( Aeroplane, Deep Kick), Metal (Coffee Shop, Warped), Modern Rock ( My Friends) Experimentation (Pea, Walkabout) and thats only like half the cd! This cd takes you on a musical journey and is lushly diverse from start to finish. If only they would've kept Dave for even one more album, that would have been incredible. But this is perhaps the Chilis at their creative peak, save BSSM. Here Comes the Bride ReviewOkay, let's get something straight right from the beginning. This album is not anything like their previous ones. It is nothing like Pocket Full of Kryptonite. Just get over it, and listen to Here Comes the Bride with an open mind and the understanding that it may take some getting used to. If you can do that, then I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
I myself first approached this album with great skepticism, but the new sound quickly grew on me. The highlights of this album are Vampires in the Sun, Gorilla Boy, Siren Dress, Diamond, the Man, and Tomorrow Can Pay the Rent (a real gem). The most obvious change is that some of the songs have a strong reggae flavor to them, but fortunately the Doctors pull it off quite well. Ivan Neville's keyboards also bring a whole new dimension to the band, and Chris Barron's singing style often diverges from their earlier material as well. Another marked change is that some of the songs seem to have a lot more soul to them. Fortunately, they haven't lost the funk, as Gorilla Boy is evidence of. A couple of tracks---Dodging Assassins and Waiting for the Blow---are bit difficult to get used to, but I'm beginning to like them as well.
Here is a band that is definitely not afraid to try something new. The Spin Doctors are ARTISTS, not some lame, sell-out group that just spits out more of the same soulless, poor-quality hooks that dominate the radio these days. Artists have can't stay the same forever, especially when they've been through as much turmoil as this band has. They have to change, to grow, to evolve. Look at REM. Here Comes the Bride is a refreshing blast of fresh air amid the stagnant smog which is most of today's popular music. Give this album a fair chance, and you'll like what you hear.Here Comes the Bride Overview
