Keep on Loving You ReviewWhatever might have been in Reba McEntire's drinking water during the production of her 31st album, KEEP ON LOVING YOU, I'll have what she's having. On the disc, McEntire exudes strength, sass, a little sap, and her signature southern charm.
Breakout first single "Strange" leads off and finds Reba foregoing heartache in favor of self preservation and a bit of wink-wink revenge upon realizing post-breakup that "the sun's still shining." The sass continues on "I Want A Cowboy," "Pink Guitar" and "I'll Have What She's Having," with the singer declaring her romantic pursuits on "Cowboy" and "Having" and narrating a young girl's stardom aspirations on "Guitar."
Never one to be a doormat, McEntire presents strong female protagonists in current single "Consider Me Gone" and the haunting "Maggie Creek Road." In the lyrically-rich former, McEntire lays it on the line when faced with an uncommunicative, withdrawn partner, singing, "If you think you can do better than this...Then I guess we're done...Consider me gone." A mother's innate need to protect her child boils to vigilantism in "Maggie Creek Road."
Fans of McEntire's country ballads get their fill with "But Why," "Over You" and "I Keep On Lovin' You." The title track, co-written by Ronnie Dunn and Terry McBride, is classic love conquering all through ups and downs.
Perhaps my favorite track on the album, "She's Turning 50 Today," tells of a woman reclaiming her freedom and future in a midlife shakeup. McEntire shares writing credits with Liz Hengber and Tommy Lee James, both of whom have penned prior No. 1 singles for Reba.
As a whole, KEEP ON LOVING YOU shines with radio-friendly selections and solid album cuts - each of which reinforces Reba's rightful place in the country music landscape. It's clear the multi-faceted entertainer, despite her success as an actress, designer and business mogul, was invigorated in making this record. That energy is apparent, and it'll leave you asking for some of what she's having...Keep on Loving You Overview2009 album from the Country superstar. Steel Guitar ReviewThis is one of the classic Buddy Emmons albums from 1975. It gives you a 40 minutes tour of the sounds and the styles the Steel Guitar can produce if played by a real master. Buddy starts off with a Breakdown-Medley, followed by a medley of his early influences, incl. Leon McAuliffe, Little Roy Wiggins, Herb Remington and Bud Isaacs. His a capella rendition of "Wild Mountain Thyme" is simply moving, the journey continues from Bob Dylan to Jazz ("Top Heavy") and finally ends in the 17th century when he closes out with a classical piece written by a German church composer. Production and musicianship are extraordinary, this album will also be loved by listeners who haven't shown too much interest in the Steel Guitar so far.Steel Guitar Overview

Once Upon a Christmas ReviewAs originally released, this album had six duets and four solo tracks - two each by Kenny and Dolly. I note that the version currently available in America has just nine tracks (confirmed to me by an American friend who has seen it), the two excellent Kenny Rogers tracks (Silent night and The Christmas song) being replaced by Dolly's Hard candy Christmas (which, despite its title, is not a Christmas song). I checked my local store and the UK version still has the original track listing. Dolly's two solo offerings on the original album - White Christmas and a medley of Winter wonderland and Sleigh ride - are both excellent.
Good as the solo tracks are, it is the six duets that make this album stand out among my many wonderful Christmas albums. Dolly wrote five of the songs especially for the album and the other is also an original song. I believe in Santa Claus and With bells on are rollicking, up-tempo songs. Christmas without you is a reflective song about missing somebody. A Christmas to remember is another upbeat song. Once upon a Christmas is a stirring song about the birth of Jesus (and has since been covered by Selah on their Christmas album Rose of Bethlehem, with Dolly guesting on that track). The greatest gift of all (the only song among the duets that Dolly didn't write) is a lovely romantic ballad, which was covered a year later by Lee Greenwood for his excellent Christmas To Christmas album; other singers have understandably covered this song too.
This album is best with the two Kenny Rogers solo tracks, but is worth buying anyway because of the outstanding duets. I have bought many brilliant original Christmas albums; this one remained my favorite for more than twenty years after its release.Once Upon a Christmas Overview
