Innocent Age ReviewThis incredible double album released at the apex of Dan Fogelberg's popularity in the early 1980s is an amazing tour-de-force by one of folk-rock's most under-appreciated artists. From the stirring opening instrumental on "Nexus" and its complex and quite accomplished lyrics describing today's contemporary cultural conundrum to the lyrical ballad "Innocent Age", this album showcases Dan's wide range of songwriting, musical, and arrangement skills. Fogelberg tends to favor a very full "wall of sound" approach to his music, and sometimes tends to somewhat overproduce arrangements by having too much going on simultaneously in his works. Yet here the songs are clear, crisp, and simply terrific, from "The Sand And The Foam" to "Stolen Moments" to a lovely accompaniment with Emmy Lou Harris on the memorable "Only The Heart May Know". A number of top-forty hits are included, from "Leader Of The Band" to "Run For The Roses" to "Same Old Lang Syne". My favorites here are the spare and haunting "Aireshire Lament" to the astonishing work on "The Reach". Dan paints a word picture here that leaves me imagining casting about on a lobster boat in the swells and eddies off the Maine coast. Perhaps it is due to its length, but I simply cannot understand why it was never released as a single. This is a wonderful album, folks, and a splendid treat to Mr. Fogelberg's considerable skills and talents. I highly recommend it. Enjoy.Innocent Age Overview

First Christmas Morning ReviewThis is my new favorite in Christmas albums. Dan's musical abilities on all levels shine through; his lyrics, arranging and instrumentation. How nice to have some new original music that is so uplifiting that it is sure to become a classic for years to come. My favorite original cut is "Christ, the King" and he excels on the traditional hymn "In the Bleak Midwinter".
For fans expecting to hear Dan's wonderful voice sing the "traditional" same old songs, you will be disappointed. This thematic album is truly artistic. Dan's use of period style (Medievil, Rennaisance and Baroque) is carried delightfully throughout every cut and the listener is transported back to a different time. A beautiful listen for a quiet evening in front of the fire. His personal notes and history of each piece were educational and inspiring.

Very Best of Dan Fogelberg ReviewDan Fogelberg, one of the greatest singer/songwriters alive, has been in this business for 30 years, and spent the first twenty of those signed to Epic, part of mega-label SONY. Unfortunately, SONY decided to terminate the contract in 1994 after Dan Fogelberg's later albums ceased to be the million-sellers they were used to (irrespective of quality content).
Anyway, this is why this "Best of"-Collection contains charting DF metarial from 1974 to 1993, not necessarily the best, but certainly the "best-known" of Dan Fogelberg. The CD basically contains the same songs released on SONY's 1982 "Dan Fogelberg's Greatest Hits" and adds some of the late 1980's and early 1990's (up to the "River of Souls" album) material. It is therefore an excellent introduction into Dan's musicical variety and songwriting abilities, be it ballads or rockers.
Anybody interested in Dan's work beyond the hits should check out the 4-disc "Portrait" release, of course, and make sure to get a hold of the (inpendently issued) CD's Dan has recorded after his SONY years.Very Best of Dan Fogelberg Overview
