Electric Tears ReviewOne thing that surprises me about buckethead is his versatility, you can listen to his albums and never get the exact same idea, or sound. The Sketches of Spain song, is an arrangement of "Concierto de Aranjuez" a classical piece, so he didnt compose it.
The entire album is incredible, you can sit and listen to it over and over and you wont get bored. It seems that he recorded all the guitars by himself, there are pieces with 2 or 3 guitars, sometimes 4, but mainly 2 guitars, one with the rythm and one with the leads, there are no other instruments, but there are a lot of effects (very well used).
Buckethead is very "conceptual" when he composes, unlike most of the musicians out there, and thats not good or bad, is just something he does. You just read the tittle and you will know what is about. I would dare to say that this is his best work so far, he really comunicates what he wants with his sound, very powerfull cd.
I really like "Colma", and "Electric Tears", but personally dont like his other albums, like cuckoo cloks from hell, and monsters and robots, etc.Electric Tears OverviewExperience the haunting, beautiful and ethereal side of Buckethead, the fried chicken bucket and white mask-wearing guitar magician who has been described by the likes of Bootsy Collins, Bill Laswell and Carlos Santana as a phenomenal guitar player. Here, Buckethead puts aside his usual ax shredding and calculated mayhem to take the listener on an atmospheric acoustic/electric voyage into his mind. Currently, he is the lead guitarist for Guns 'n Roses, and he also plays lead for Praxis and Giant Robot.

Oh Gravity. ReviewI'm an older (almost, gulp, 40) pop, indie, alternative music fan who came across a great pop song on the radio titled "Stars." Bought it on iTunes, enjoyed it. By this band called "Switchfoot."
I recently saw a new album by Switchfoot on Amazon (released on my birthday, Dec. 26th!) and thought, what the heck, let's see if there are any good "Stars"-like songs on it. Digressing, I appreciate solid albums (yeah, 10-12 songs long) that don't force you to skip songs and provide an emotional ride (haven't had many of those since the peak of U2, R.E.M., Coldplay, Radiohead, etc.). To say the new Switchfoot album was a complete surprise is the understatement of the decade. And then I found out they were a "Christian" band (I love labels) and I was like, really? Don't care one way or the other, because this is an awesome rock/pop whatever-you-want-to-label-it album.
Partial credit must go to Steve Lillywhite - he has this knack of getting the most pop (yeah, I like pop songs - sue me) out of rock bands, while keeping the emotional strengths and solid musicianship. Look at Dave Matthews Band - their first three albums (love em or hate em) are incredible pop rock albums with emotion to boot. Nothing they have done since ditching Mr. Lillywhite have been nearly as good. So, even though I have not heard Switchfoot's catalog, I must give credit in part to Mr. Lillywhite for the incredibly pleasant surprise that is "Oh! Gravity."
Enough blathering - every song has something interesting about it, whether it be soaring guitars (the build up to and chorus of "Head Over Heels"), awesome singing (screaming in "Oh! Gravity" and "Awakening"), heartfelt emotion ("Head Over Heels" and "Yesterdays"), kick-a** rhythms (the whole album) and interesting musical touches throughout ("Dirty Second Hands" "Faust" and my favorite, "4:12"). The lyrics and emotion feel honest, not forced, and definitely provide some solid messages for this time (excess - bad, having a heart - good). And while its sounds like a mid-90's song by Gutterball (look it up), "Amatuer Lovers" rocks out and places a giddy smile on my face every time I hear it.
I highly recommend this album - you may not rate every song a five out of five, but you have to appreciate a rock band that can do a lot of different things interestingly and well without pretention and with passion. Congratulations to Switchfoot - you have a hard core new fan. I can only imagine how fun it would be to hear these songs live...

Hello Hurricane ReviewHello Hurricane, Switchfoot's first studio album since 2006's Oh! Gravity, which debuted at No. 18 on The Billboard 200, acknowledges life's storms while managing to find an element of hope in them. The band tracked more than 80 songs at its self-built home studio before narrowing it down to the 12 that appear on the new album. Hello Hurricane is the group's seventh full-length album and its first on Atlantic Records. Switchfoot is comprised of Jon Foreman (vocals/guitar), Tim Foreman (bass), Chad Butler (drums), Jerome Fontamillas (keys/guitar) and Drew Shirley (guitar).
The album grabbed my attention right from the opening notes of "Needle and Haystack Life", which will thrill long-time Switchfoot fans, and probably win them new fans with the U2-esque epic feel and extremely catchy music and lyrics. This is one of those albums that is meant to be experienced in the order it is arranged as lead single "Mess of Me" switches gears musically and brings a new grunge-type sound with the passionate lyrics "I wanna spend the rest of my life alive!". My favorite new Switchfoot song is next, "Your Love Is A Song" in the style of "On Fire" from The Beautiful Letdown. I've enjoyed this band since New Way To Be Human released in 1999 and Hello Hurricane truly brings a great mixture sonically and stylistically that fans of rock anthems, alt-rock and grunge-rock will enjoy. "The Sound" will also have you shouting along with Jon, whose vocals have never sounded better and musically this song reminded me of "Stars" and "We Are One Tonight" from Nothing Is Sound, my previous favorite Switchfoot album. There is little that reminds me of Oh! Gravity, other than maybe the up tempo but more refined sounding rock songs that perfect the sound introduced with the title track and "Awakening".
Some other highlights for me come towards the end of the album, which cools down with "Always", a truly inspirational song in the style of "Twenty-Four" with this great bridge: "Hallelujah!, I'm caving in, Hallelujah! I'm in love again, Hallelujah!, I'm a wretched man, Hallelujah!, every breath is a second chance". "Always" transitions beautifully to "Bullet Soul", another Switchfoot anthem which will have you moving with a great guitar riff and a call to action "are you ready to go?". As if the album didn't have enough hooks, my next favorite track comes next with the ballad "Yet" a gorgeous contemplative song with a sincere chorus: "I'll sing until my heart caves in, no, you haven't lost me yet".
I find myself singing at the top of my lungs with each song and "Your Love Is A Song" is one of my top 20 songs of the year. For me, Hello Hurricane is now the best overall album by Switchfoot and is one of my top 5 albums of 2009. The standout songs are "Needle and Haystack Life", "Mess of Me", "Your Love Is A Song", "The Sound", "Always", "Bullet Soul" and "Yet".Hello Hurricane Overview

Around the World: International Folk Songs ReviewFirst, let us ask what is a folk song and what isn't? A folk song springs out of the spirit of the people; it has no known composer. In contrast, an art song has a known composer. With time and familiarity, however, some art songs essentially become folk songs. Consider, for example, Der Lindenbaum (Schubert) and Die Lorelei (Silcher). Unfortunately, in the US "folk song" became adulterated, associated with Joan Baez; Peter, Paul, and Mary; and even Burl Ives (very versatile and one of my favorite singers). A personal comment--Am Brunnen vor dem Tore da steht ein Lindenbaum suffuses my soul, and I feel that Schubert composed it specifically for me, a world traveler who may also long for the peace of home! Moving to the CD under review, one could not find a more worthy group than the Wiener Saengerknaben directed by Peter Marschik. The CD includes songs from most countries that are familiar to the average listener. Some songs are very familiar--Shenandoah, Loch Lomond, and Cielito Lindo--and many not so familiar. I recommend this CD to listeners who are just now taking an interest in folksongs. My only complaint is that some songs are hard to hear, perhaps because the amplitude was set too low. I came across this CD because it was the only recording of Sarie Marais (of Boer origin} and one of my favorite songs.Around the World: International Folk Songs Overview
