Ain't That a Bitch Reviewi have loved johnny guitar watson since 1977 (real mother4 ya)and yes ,have tracked down the albums and cds in merry old england!!this is the grooviest from the out attack of "i need it",to the slow burn of "since i met you baby".this is probably the mans most complete recording,for my money.i would guarentee you would not be disappointed with this.jgw was never massive in uk apart from soul underground,and those who got his groove remained loyal.those of us who love this mans music should spread the message.Ain't That a Bitch Overview

Best of ReviewIf you missed the 70's and want to get a good taste of it, then buy this CD. This music is continually inventive, although some of it could be written off as disco crossover. The irrepressible spirit of 'Guitar' Watson shines through though, making this a very good listen. Check out Frank Zappa's "One Size Fits All" CD for more JGW fun and games.Best of Overview

Funk Anthology (Dig) ReviewFinally somebody got it right- to release the best, spaced-out funky-ass rhythm & blues jams from this wildcat often called a "genius" by his peers. The red carpet was rolled out for this lush 2 CD 31 song set (6 previously unreleased!) digitally remastered with a 28 page booklet and a plethora of photos spanning the years 1976-1994. The music matters most but the packaging must be praised. The foldout digi-pack even contains pics of both the front and back of each of the albums covered here. Before becoming a pimpin' funkster Watson was a manic, Texas blues stringer known for his rapid-fire guitar fingers and the classic "Gangster Of Love" (way before Steve Miller copped the phrase). He reinveted himself in the 70s and this set focuses on this fruitful period. All the big hits and key album tracks are here: "Superman Lover" (R & B #19), "Aint That A Bitch", the unstoppable "A Real Mother For Ya" (#5 R & B #41 Pop), "Tarzan", "Funk Beyond The Call Of Duty", "It's About The Dollar Bill", the updated "Gangster Of Love" (#32 R & B), "Booty Ooty", "Lone Ranger", "Love Jones" (#28 R & B), his comeback hit "Bow Wow" & more. Most interesting perhaps are the "new" cuts. When asked by biographer David Ritz about stuff in the vault Watson was quoted as saying: "There's gold in them there hills!". He may be right. "Baby's In Love With The Radio" is a loose funk jam with Watson's laidback vocal delivery- recorded in 1976. On "ET" Johnny says his baby is just like that alien freak! I doubt he means in looks cuz she's a "supernatural" chick. "Feel The Spirit Of My Guitar" is Johnny's muatation of the Peter Frampton track. My favorite is "Don't Be What UC", which has a groove similar to George Clinton's "Atomic Dog" (and especially Snoop Dogg's "What's My Name?"). Here Johnny's tell y'all to stop trying to emulate folks and be yourself. There's also a track unreleased from the "Love Jones" sessions ("Before I Let You Go") and one recorded but unissued from 1994 ("Ain't Nodbody's Business"). But it's just icing on an already triple chocolate cake. The cover sticker says "You don't know *@#& until you've heard this funk!". Damn straight.Funk Anthology (Dig) Overview

Best of the Funk Years (Slip) ReviewJohnny Guitar Watson had a Signature Sound on the Guitar along with his too cool vocals that always hit home. "a Real Mother for Ya" is stil a Monster Jam. He had a free flow style that worked. you can hear some Ray Charles Harmony in his overall delievery as well. the amazing thing about Johnny Guitar Watson is that he re-invented himself from the Blues&adapted to the Funk&brought along his own bag of the Funk. BrotherMan was doing it all as a Writer, Arranger, Producer&overall Multi Instrumentalist. He gave Social Commentary, always had Humor&a down home folk vibe that was timeless as his Guitar Playing. Love Jones ReviewJohnny Guitar Watson plays guitar like no other. Got to, since he's a blues man. What? you'd say, didn't he do "Real Mother For Ya". Sure he did, he also did Booty Ooty (which is on this one), Gangster Of Love (on Giant - and which Steve Miller borrowed for The Joker), I Don't Wanna Be President (on What The Hell Is This? - on fuel shortage), I even dare to say he was one of the first rappers around when nobody except maybe Isaac Hayes did things like that.
So WHAT is Johnny Guitar - or better was, since he died in Japan in the middle of a performance.
Johnny was one of the best, period. He played the guitar - and most other instruments, composed, arranged and produced. He was funny as hell: You Can Stay But The Noise Must Go (come on, who else would come up with that?). Check out the covers, one better than the other.
You want to dance, take Johnny, you want to love, same thing. In for a laugh, go for Johnny. Anything else on your mind? Johnny delivers.
