Original Bad Company Anthology ReviewBad Company was the band Paul Rodgers formed after the breakup of the highly underrated band Free and his decision to decline the invitation to join Deep Purple. This 2 cd set contains music from only the original line up (not the mid eighties line up without Rodgers) with the addition of four new tracks by the original members. The original line up consisted of Rodgers and drummer Simon Kirke from Free, Mick Ralphs on guitar from Mott The Hoople, and Boz Burrell on bass from King Crimson. The band was a supergroup of sorts. The band's music was much more commercial and less blues oriented than that of Free. Bad Company's music also had a more polished, less chaotic feel than that of either Mott The Hoople or King Crimson. Rodgers was in excellent form while Ralph's guitar playing while not flashy was economical. Kirke was always a powerhouse drummer while Burrell's bass playing was solid.
The band gained immmediate acceptance when they hired Peter Grant of Led Zeppelin fame to manage them and released their first and best lp "Bad Company" on Led Zeppelin's own Swan Song label. This lp contained many of Bad Company's best songs such as "Can't Get Enough", "Rock Steady" "Movin' On" "Bad Company" and "Ready For Love" which Ralphs originally wrote while in Mott The Hoople. Other familiar cuts include "Feel Like Makin' Love", "Shooting Star" and "Rock And Roll Fantasy". The set also contains a few rarities such as alternate takes, unissued tracks, and a few non-lp b-sides like "Little Miss Fortune" and "Easy On My Soul" which was originally written by Rodgers while in Free. The four new tracks sound like classic Bad Company with a slightly more updated sound. Some personal favorites include "Good Lovin' Gone Bad" and "Burnin' Sky" among others.
There are a few reasons why I did not give this set a definitive 5 star rating. The first reason is the disk length. The first disk is approximately 66 minutes while the second disk is around 71 minutes. This extra time could have been used to add such essential cuts as "Live For The Music", "Young Blood", "Gone Gone Gone", and "Electric Land." However, this remastered set is the most representative anthology available for the hugely popular Bad Company. It also provides a good summation their sometimes erratic albums. Blues By Green Review"Blues By Green", released in 2003, is the perfect initiation into the styles and songs of Peter Green, diverse, yet all bluesy in one way or another. Painkiller ReviewFollowing the poor record sales of 1988's attempted but largely unsuccessful comeback, "Ram It Down," Judas Priest tried to win their fans back with their twelfth studio effort, 1990's "Painkiller." Frontman Rob Halford, axemen K.K. Downing and Glenn Tipton, bassist Ian Hill, and drummer Scott Travis went about this task by returning to their classic, 1970's style of metal while simultaneously intermixing some techniques from modern, contemporary speed metal bands. The result was a masterful new disc, the heaviest and most musically complex of Judas Priest's career, which successfully won all of the band's fans back, and even gained them many new fans. "Painkiller" is not only the definition of a Nineties' classic; it's a truly wonderful comeback, and easily the best release of Priest's long and storied career. Plus--since it's saturated with fast riffs, scorching leads, extended, technical solos, quick drumming, and Rob's shrieking vocals--many music fans think (justifably so) that "Painkiller" is the epitome of speed metal. It's also one of the most famous and important albums on heavy metal's timeline. Motorhead may have given birth to speed metal, but "Painkiller" has spawned a generation of imitators, so it's equally as influential as anything by, well, any other band. The opening title track sets the mood well for the rest of the songs. It has a fast drum beat and fast churning riffs, as well as Rob's standard, very high pitched vocals, and two sweet guitar solos (the first of which is well over a minute long!) The appropriately titled "All Guns Blazing," has a spectacular, wailing solo which has several different parts to it. The next song, "Leather Rebel," is a very speedy track with an almost buzzsaw rhythm, and track five ("Metal Meltdown") features three back-to-back guitar solos. Other highlights include the memorable chug and churn guitars and thumping drums of "Night Crawler," "Between The Hammer & The Anvil," which is highlighted by yet another lengthy, winding, mazey, three part solo, and, the catchy, mid-paced, stop-start rhythm behind "A Touch Of Evil." Finally, if you buy the remastered version of this album, you get two bonus tracks--"Living Bad Dreams," and a rare, live version of "Leather Rebel"--which are both excellent inclusions in your collection. "Painkiller" is, from front to back, an eargasm. If you're a speed/thrash/classical metal fan, there's almost no record you need more than this one, and if you weren't a Judas Priest fan before, you'll definitely be one now! This has got to be one of the finest metal albums ever recorded, and it is nothing short of being a flawless, genre defining, standard bearing classic.Painkiller Overview

Dedicated Review"Dedicated" is Steve Cropper's debut project on 429 Records. For those of you unfamiliar with Cropper's track record, he has an impressive resume: a member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the staff song writer and in-house guitarist on Stax Records staff, and a member of Booker T & the MGs. He also is credited with writing some true R&B classics: "Knock on Wood," "In the Midnight Hour" and "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay." "Dedicated" is a tribute to guitar player Pete Pauling and his band of the Five Royales, one of Cropper's biggest influences, and named after the 5 Royales's hit "Dedicated To The One I Love." Aside from Cropper's guitar playing, the album features an amazing set of musicians which includes bassist David Hood (Muscle Shoals sideman), keyboardist Spooner Oldham (Fame Studios sideman and top notch song writer who has also played with Neil Young), Dap-Kings saxman Neal Sugarman, drummer Steve Farone, and drummer Steve Jordan. There's also an all star line up of special guests: Steve Winwood, B.B. King, Shemekia Copeland, Delbert McClinton, Lucinda Williams, Queen guitarist Brian May, and singers Sharon Jones and Bettye LaVette. Cropper's playing on "Dedicated" is classic; his rhythms are tight, his fills original and unique, and it's easy to see why he's one of the best guitar players of all time. The best part of these songs is that they are straight from his heart, something you can easily feel from your first listen. If you want to hear some incredible re-makes of classic songs that feature a phenomenal list of musicians, look no farther. George Crumb 70th Birthday Album ReviewEver since I read a review of the concert where George Crumb's Star Child was premiered I've been hoping that a recording would be forthcoming. In a sense, this is your typical Crumb work, with it's wild vocalise, it's unusual instrumental effects, it's mixture of tonal and atonal elements, and, most of all, it's aura of ritual and mystery. It also breaks new ground in it's scope (a large orchestra used sparingly) and layering of different musics. I particularly love the duet between the soprano and trombone ("Voices Crying in the Wilderness" indeed!) and the quietly estatic closing, with the strings soaring into their highest range. The guitar work shows a lighter and humorous side of Crumb's art and are a delight, as are the early songs (although there is only a hint of the composer's later style buried in them). Crumb: Songs, Drones And Refrains Of Death ReviewThe three works on this disc are somewhat "typical" Crumb. "Songs, Drones, and Refrains of Death" is not Crumb's greatest work, even if it has his signature gestures -- a combination of speaking and singing during songs, shouting from the percussion players, among other techniques. It's a little contrived and more than a little dated (it's unmistakably 1960s avant-garde), but it's not a bad work. The recording's vocal performance by both the ensemble and the soloist sounds very muddled, which is unfortunate.
The Suite for Christmas has never been my favorite work. Crumb's other works for piano, such as the Makrokosmos books, are so much better it makes this work really look kind of anomalously amateur, even though I'm sure it's extremely hard to play. Orkis makes the most of this work, it's as good as I've ever heard it.
Apparition is by far the best work on this disc. It focuses on death just like the Songs and Drones, but Apparition also has some of the most delicate music found in any of Crumb's works. And the singing is sharp and clear, even with the transparent textures of the music. It uses Walt Whitman's Death Carol as its text and really captures the mysticism, light, and darkness that surrounds death that Whitman conveys in his poem.
Overall, it's a good disc. It's definitely a great disc for people who like Crumb, but I know I wouldn't have explored much more of his music if this were my introduction.Crumb: Songs, Drones And Refrains Of Death Overview
