Keep It Simple ReviewKeb Mo has done 3 of my favorite albums (CD's...I am an old dog) of all time. Keb' Mo, Just Like You, and Slow Down are the three. The Door and Keep It Simple don't get me. He is still a great voice and guitar player but the music just doesn't move me. I think, as has been noted, that he is moving away from the blues and that is fine. I hate to see artists get pigeon holed into something they don't have their heart in. And in all fairness, none of the CD's are totally blues anyway. But I will say that if blues is your bag, then certainly start with one of the early works. If you like a littele more pop sound then buy Keep It Simple or The Door. By the way, I happen to enjoy Big Wide Grin, which is all covers, more than Keep It Simple or The Door. The selections are interesting and well performed. I stand Keb's version of America the Beautiful up with Ray Charles' version. And Everybody Be Yo'self is one of my favorite Keb' Mo recordings. I wait with interest to see where he goes next. I will continue to follow but will always gravitate to the first three works. One more thing, his Sessions at 54th make me want to see him live. He has a great stage persona.Keep It Simple Overview

As I listened to this remarkable work, the narration and the outstanding songs and singers, I was frequently moved and, yes, I wept. The songs feature people and events in LDS history. They are about spirituality, endurance, courage, suffering, loss, and triumph. A person does not have to be LDS to appreciate and identify with the sentiments in the narration and music. You Are Mine: Best of David Haas Vol 2 ReviewFive stars aren't nearly enough; I wish I could at least double that amount! I was going through some very rough times this summer -- a realization that I suffered from deep depression and from an addiction which I'd struggled for years to deny -- when one Sunday, as our closing hymn at Mass, the congregation sang "You Are Mine". Intellectually, I guess I'd known the Scriptural truths proclaimed by that song since childhood, but now here they were, spoken in the first person as though by God, and directed to me! The Word of God beautifully set to music, proclaiming "Do not be afraid, I am with you. I have called you each by name. Come and follow Me and I will bring you home. I love you and you are Mine!" No, I'm not going to try to tell you that listening to that one song by itself changed my whole life or solved all my problems; that took much work, much time, and God's grace. But hearing this song certainly gave me a new and wonderful perspective on the reality of God's deep and unconditional love! I rushed out and bought the CD the next day, and was delighted to find the the rest of the tracks were just as uplifting. These songs are not "sappy" or overly emotional. Most are very peppy, set to a zesty instrumental accompaniment. There isn't a song on the CD that I skip over when I play it, but if I had to pick a second favorite, it would be "We Will Drink the Cup". This has become my personal battle song in the struggles I face, and I'm certain many others will say the same after they hear it. The chorus begins with a single female vocalist proclaiming: "We will drink the cup, we will win the fight; we sill stand against the darkness of the night! We will run the race, and see God's face, and build the kingdom of love!" After each verse, more and more voices join in this chorus until these powerful affirmations are sung in beautiful harmony by what sounds like an army of believers. Whenever I find myself struggling against the urge to just give-in or let go, I mentally play back that chorus -- " ... we will win the fight; we will stand against the darkness of the night ..." -- and find the strength to hang tough for just a while longer. David Haas has my undying gratitude for this priceless, wonderful gift! I recommend this CD for anyone who's having a bad day -- or a bad life, for that matter -- and needs powerful reassurance that the Lord truly cares!!You Are Mine: Best of David Haas Vol 2 Overview

Desert Guitar ReviewThe guitar music (with spare accompaniment) on this CD broadened my horizons in a number of ways; and the unobtrusive superb nature sounds, such as desert songbirds, migrating geese, hoot-owls, wind, horses, coyotes!, trickling water, distant rain and thunder, singing frogs, chanting insects - are seamless segues between the original, simple - by no means whatsoever simplistic - compositions, which themselves approach the sublime. I have tried, unsuccessfully, to find out from Northsound Music who the musicians were on this recording (so I could obtain more of it!); there is precise studio production here also, but in no way does it sound "canned" or overdone for its idiom; it is flawless thematically and in execution ("Desert Night" is particularly nice). This music has accompanied me mentally for about 10 years now; I go through seasons when I listen to it almost ritualistically: on a cold, dry, weekend morning, coffee infused with the scent of sagebrush and diesel fumes. I am listening to it now, and I feel myself transported to Apache Pass beneath Grand Canyon down to Tucson skirting Sandia on over to Big Bend where the Rio Bravo is wild; on to Guadalupe Mountain in Far West Texas; also to the high deserts of the Great Basin where Northern Nevada, Eastern Oregon and Southern Idaho converge in the Snake River drainage on its way to the sea. Somehow, for me, Desert Guitar captures a sense of those geographical epiphanies and a deep sense of place. The first half of the CD introduces styles inherent to the Spanish-tuned, nylon (or gut) stringed guitars: some lively yet restrained fingerwork, flamenco-influence, punctuated with articulated flat-picking - a curious, percussive sound both plaintive and bold, that only a guitar can produce. The middle of the thematic journey evokes torrid days drenched with sun and sweat. The latter third of the disc invites cooling imagery, of big sky vistas, purple and orange, sharp shadows, disruptive patterns. Weaving in major and minor at variegated tempo and mood, these tunes touch the heart in undiscovered places, evoking introspective moods and existential hope. It would probably sound great on the Moon! (which is also our highest desert).Desert Guitar Overview
