Bachata Roja: Acoustic Bachata From the Cabaret Era Review"Bachata" is a party music that comes from the Dominican Republic, and since the 1980s it has become a globally popular dance style... This disc explores bachata's roots in the early 1960s to the early '80s, when it was still a primarily acoustic form, mixing the heart-piercing sentimentality of the bolero with dazzling, multi-layered guitar work similar to the Cuban guajira and Puerto Rican jibaro music... This is amazingly rich, satisfying music -- one of the finest historical Latin albums of the decade, packed with powerful performances from rare, hard-to-find records. Highly recommended! (DJ Joe Sixpack/Slipcue)Bachata Roja: Acoustic Bachata From the Cabaret Era OverviewBachata Roja is the first ever international release of classic Dominican Bachata. From the early 1960's to the late 1980's the legendary voices of Eladio Romero Santos, Leonardo Paniagua and Blas Duran spoke to the hearts of a generation. The dizzying guitar accompaniment of pioneers like Edilio Paredes and Augusto Santos charted the course of bachata s rise, and for three decades theirs was the sound of the streets of Santo Domingo. iASO has selected here some of the defining songs of bachata s pre-electric era.

Supernatural ReviewOkay, I've read something like 400 of these reviews so I thought I'd speak up. I've been a Santana fan since the early '70's. My personal preference is for Santana's old jazz/rock fusion albums, (e.g., "Illuminations"[1974], "Borboletta"[1974], "Lotus"[1974], and the impossible to categorize, "Oneness"[1979]). But "Supernatural"[1999] is definitely Santana's best pop/rock album in at least 12 years ("Freedom"[1987]) and maybe 28 years ("Santana III"[1971]). I felt the band's last studio album, "Milagro"[1992], was too diffuse and self-indulgent to achieve greatness (despite some fabulous individual tracks).
I like almost every track on "Supernatural." The Latin rock tracks include "(Da le)Yaleo," "African Bamba," "Migra," "Corazon Espinado"(featuring Mana), and "Primavera"; in my opinion, any one of the last 3 of these is worth the price of the CD. I'd never heard of Lauryn Hill before I bought this album, but I really love "Do You Like the Way"--I didn't much care for it at first listen, but it grew on me. "El Farol" is a sweet, passionate sort of light jazz guitar solo with typical blazing crescendo. "The Calling" w/Eric Clapton is decent, but not great--though both guitarists manage to put out (all-too-brief) moments of sheer wonder. I don't care much for either "Maria, Maria" w/Product G&B, or "Wishing It Was" w/Eagle-Eye Cherry. The pop tunes, "Love of My Life" (featuring Dave Matthews) and "Smooth" (featuring Rob Thomas) are really great tracks. The dark and brooding alternative rock track, "Put Your Lights On" (featuring Everlast) simply takes my breath away. Be sure to wait for the unlisted track after "The Calling."
My chief complaint with the album is that Chester Thompson's keyboard talents are not showcased enough. The percussion section is given ample room to breathe, especially on "(Da Le) Yaleo" and "Migra."
Santana's unique style turns me into one big goose bump; if the music doesn't do that for you, it's not Santana's fault and it's not your fault, either. Despite several reviewers' criticisms about what they perceive as a commercial bent to this album, I find that commercial bent to be a very positive influence on the band's music; this is an extremely tight, well-produced CD--kind of a rarity for Santana. I don't personally see what is so objectionable about an artist reaching out to a wider audience. The first 3 albums by the original Santana band were smash hits and, frankly, I think it's great to hear the band on the radio again with some new music. Anyway, if you find something sinister or just plain unsatisfactory about a band consciously trying for commercial appeal, then be forewarned because that is exactly what Santana and Arista Records set out to do. I think they did a great job.
If you like this CD, you might want to check out "Moonflower"[1977], "Zebop!"[1981], "Spirits Dancing in the Flesh"[1990], or even "Freedom"[1987]; these are some of the better pop/rock Santana albums, in my opinion.Supernatural OverviewIncludes (Da Le) Yalleo with Dave Matthews; Love Of My Life with Everlast; Put Your Lights On; Africa Bamba; Smooth with Rob Thomas; Do You Like The Way with Lauryn Hill; Maria, Maria; Migra with Mana; Corazon Espinado; Wishing It Was with Eagle-Eye Cherry; El Farol; The Calling with Eric Clapton. 13 tracks.

Getz/Gilberto ReviewThis album is bossa nova's finest moment. It contains the definitive version of one of the greatest hits in jazz music --- The Girl From Ipanema --- the first part sung in Portuguese by guitarist/singer João Gilberto, the second in English by his ex-wife Astrud who had never sung professionally before this recording. All the songs were written by Antonio Carlos Jobim except Para Machucar Meu Coraçao and Doralice. Stan Getz's lyrical yet swinging solos complement João's equally lyrical singing and rhythmic guitar playing. The unassuming Jobim plays a brief but beautiful piano solo on Corcovado (Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars). Tommy Williams (bass) and Milton Banana (drums) provide the steady rhythm without overpowering the music. To this day, Getz/Gilberto remains the definitive bossa nova album.
The sound quality on this 20-bit remastered edition is even more brilliant than the original CD reissue. Moreover, the fading notes on some of the selections have been extended, thus prolonging the listening pleasure just a bit more.
This album proves that music is indeed a universal language. You don't need to know Portuguese to understand, let alone, appreciate this album. All you need is the ability to appreciate fine music and an innate sense to admire beauty, and this CD has plenty to offer.

The Best Of Santana Review"The Best of Santana" greatly expands on the band's original Greatest Hits package, which only covered the late 60s and early 70s. Filled to capacity with 16 songs, this collection is about as complete as one can hope for in a single volume. It starts out with early classic rock radio staples like "Black Magic Woman," "Evil Ways," "Oye Como Va," and the cover of the Zombies "She's not There." The disc then moves on to more recent Santana hits like the new wave-ish "Winning," and "Hold On" before returning to the early days for some excellent lengthy jams like "Dance Sister Dance" and "Soul Scrifice." The only thing missing is any material from Santana's recent commercial comeback. The disc gets extra credit for not adding on any inferior "new" material like a lot of such packages do.
Overall, an excellent one volume anthology from one of classic rock's brighter stars. The Best Of Santana OverviewThe definitive single-CD Santana collection, with 16 newly remastered and resplendent tracks taken from their entire career! Includes Evil Ways; Soul Sacrifice; Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen; Oye Como Va; Samba Pa Ti; She's Not There; Jingo; No One to Depend On; Open Invitation; Hold On; Bella; Winning; All I Ever Wanted; Dance Sister Dance; Europa , and Everybody's Everything .

Para Siempre ReviewI haven't listened to mexican music in a while, much less ranchera but I, like most Mexicans, know and love alot of Vicente songs and consider him among Mexico's national treasures. This album got me back to listening to Mexican music again since I was hooked when I first heard the album (track 2). I also just learned that Joan Sebastian is responsible for writing all the tracks on this wonderful album. It's a fantastic album with wonderful lyrics (which makes or breaks a song for me) and once sung with Chente's wonderful voice, the album becomes irresistible. If Chente worked with Joan on the rest of his albums, I'd get them all. A second choice would have to be Marco Antonio Solis, also capable of writing in any genre if he feels like it. I haven't missed an album since "Mi Fantasia". Anyways, below are my fav 4 for now.
- Top 4:
- A Quien Vas a Amar Mas Que a Mi - "No vas hallar al ser maravilloso al ser perfecto, que rebase este amor y que en efecto, te entregue todo y mas de lo que di" OH MY GOD! Wonderful
- Niña Hechicera - Great tempo and Vicente makes you want to sing along.
- Para Siempre - Nice and slow guitar star with Chente singing: "Vale mas un buen amor, que mil costales de oro..." How true.
- Millon De Primaveras - Have someone in your past you just can't get over? This song is for you.
Here is what else I listen to when not Chente (Como Me Haces Falta is an example of great lyrics, at least for me, on this Bukis album):
A Donde Vas
Mi Fantasia
Para Siempre OverviewVicente Fernandez is not only the world's greatest living ranchera inger, he's also a true compadre who's willing to share the spotlight with his fellow artists. He's already paid tribute to iconic Mexican songwriters of yesteryear such as Jose Alfredo Jimenez and Agustin Lara. Now, he teams up with one of the most poetic composers of the past 35 years, The maestro Joan Sebastion, for an album with 12 brand new songs by Sebastian himself.

La Sandunga ReviewThe second of two Lila Downs CDs I bought just before I went into the auditorium to see her live is a quieter affair, but with as much subgenres from the Mexican and Mixtec music culture that really opened my eyes. Here are the highlights.
The title track is a mournful ode to one's dead mother, with piano and acoustic guitar. According the notes, "La Sandunga" is played in ritual ceremonies, but as a genre, it became a sort of Mexican waltz, a merger of indigenous and European influences.
The quick-paced mariachi-like "Pobre Changuita," with quickly sung vocals, is the forerunner of Mexican country music. Lila does her comical helium-like voice in this one.
The slow and swaying "Naila" is similar to Cuban habanera music. The bongos and guitar add to the Latin rhythm.
In the same tempo, with a touch of slow jazz and bossa nova, are "Tengo Miedo De Quererte" and "Un Poco Mas," both triumphant showcases for her upper register. Both sport the Cuban bolero style, using African rhythms. Paul Cohen, her husband, who was was one of the musicians at the concert, has a notable sax solo here.
The corrido "Ofrenda" is dedicated to Mixtec immigrants who try to get work in the US and die there, something tackled more on La Linea.
Wow, here's the haunting "La Llorona" once again. It's also on her La Linea album, but also on the Frida soundtrack, where it's done by other artists. This was done in the concert, and it was one of the better numbers done. Like the title track, there's a slow waltz influence, with the Spanish guitar giving it the indigenous influence. The legends differ, but they have in common a screaming woman at night. Lila's voice reaches an operatic height at one point.
"Yunu Yucu Ninu" is an a capella song in Mixtec, and praises the trees and mountain of Yucuninu for providing sustenance for humans and animals, and how
The CECAM marching band is used in "Cancion Mixteca", which thematically covers the Mixtec mythical character of the Sun Archer and the constant migration of the Mixtec people.
Things really get hot in the festive "Pinotepa", which also uses the same marching band in the chilena style, brought to Mexico by African slaves who came with Pizzaro, one of the most villainous conquistadors.
What differentiates this from the original 1995 release is the three bonus tracks, originally part of the Trazos song collection. These songs incorporate some jazz piano elements, with a bossa nova backbeat. "Besame Mucho" is a nice relaxing number for one.
The explanation of the songs are a big help, written by Lila herself in both Spanish and English, and some of them tell when certain Latin genres of music were created. The important thing is that all the songs were composed by people living in Oaxaca, where the Mixtecs live.
A mostly mellower collection of songs, most of it sung in Lila's melodic higher register, and incorporating Mexican, Zapotec, and Mixteca cultural elements, many that I'd never even heard of...until now, and light jazz. Is she great, or what?La Sandunga Overview

Jazz Samba ReviewHow do you critique the album that started an era? Forty years later, Jazz Samba is still one of the most relaxing, rhythmically pleasing albums made. All instrumental, with the tenor sax of Stan Getz (the guy John Coltrane professed to admire!) and inspired guitar of Charlie Byrd. The entire album was recorded in one session in the performance hall of a Washington, D.C., church, and it puts legions of studio albums to shame.
While Desafinado and Bahia are the best known tracks, the album is a seamless experience and it is difficult to single out certain songs as superior. If Getz is one of the masters of the tenor saxophone, it is also hard to separate his proficiency from the effort as a whole -- it truly comes across as a tight ensemble effort. (For a contrast, Duke Ellington's masterful and equally essential Money Jungle released the same year finds the trio of Ellington, Mingus and Max Roach locked in a musical duel on a couple of tracks.)
Favorites? I enjoy Samba de Uma Nota So, but every time I reach for Jazz Samba I alway listen to the entire album. At least once. This and Getz/Gilberto belong in every jazz collection.Jazz Samba Overview

Frida ReviewElliot Goldenthal, the scorer of movies such as "Heat" and "Titus," comes back with a brilliant blend of traditional Mexican and original latin music to go with one of the best movies of 2002: Julie Taymor's "Frida." The soundtrack as a whole is simply outstanding, yet it has some peak moments: Lila Downs' performances, most specifically the opening track, 'Benediction and Dream,' the sexy tango 'Alcoba Azul' and the theme that plays during the closing titles, 'Burn it blue' which she performs with Brazilian super-star, Caetano Veloso. Also the rendition of "La Llorona" by Chavela Vargas is outstanding. The tracks that are part of his score work are also outstanding, and reminded me a lot of the music from the album "Ronroco" by Argentinian composer and producer, Gustavo Santaolallas. All in all, a very eclectic and hypnotizingly beautiful soundtrack with supreme good taste.Frida Overviewtitolo-fridaetichetta-deutsche grammophonn. dischi1data20 gennaio 2003supportocd audiogenerecolonne sonore-brani----1.benediction and dreamsascolta2.the floating bedascolta3.el conjevoascolta4.paloma negraascolta5.self portrait with air downascolta6.alcob

Seven ReviewDelightful compositions with `influential originality' - it's Enrique Iglesias with another beautiful collection `Seven'. Sure to get `Addicted'. I say `Influential Originality' becoz though some numbers reminds influential touch, Enrique is his cool Original and a great seductive voice.
Not in Love : This one makes an outstanding beginning. It's got a melodious rhythm n beat and sure is a sing along piece. This is my fav and the very Best of Enrique. Don't miss out listening!
The Way You Touch Me: A lil bit seductive n influential of Enrique's earlier song and when he sings `you can walk, we can talk..all I want....doesn't these words sound familiar? Yeah..yeah...makes the song too inviting too.
Say it : A soothing influential song which reminds of George Michael's songs. The words..."To keep up the fight...So I need you to say it...if you really want this to end...Jes take me" The Bass n high scale here is simply unlike Enrique and he's proved to be an outstanding singer.
California Callin' : The guitars n drum beats have a great flow in this song. Should I turn around, should I leave you alone ...these words sung with indepth vocals and makes the song very appealing.

Addicted : Frankly, the video's disappointing coz I expected smthing like earlier Enrique songs but the Audio number is fantastic. A beautiful composition.
Break me Shake me : A twist n shake number to dance along. I luv the way its sung `I'm gonnaa...I'm gonna.... A very honest number!

Free : Becoz I'm free...free Enrique number that says it all in a seductive voice.

Be Yourself : An influenced number, Enrique reminds of oldies here. You gotta Be Yourself could all a fan say to Enrique but the song's good listening, no wonder!
Wish You were Here with Me : Sometimes ...Enrique's Best listening and this number is jes passing by.
You Rock Me : Good music and good vocals. I couldn't believe this is Enrique!

Roamer : The chorus is good here while the music plays melodious continuous notes to high pitch sometimes.
Live it up Tonight : An influenced number - (Put your hands in the air....) as it sings `Live it up tonight...live it up tonight' - A nice tune.
Bonus collections are simply superb. The Adicto is his original Spanish number. Metro mix and Glam as You mix. Glam..this one's got real club dancing beat and sure to be hit this Christmas parties.
Overall, My rating goes 5 Stars! Buy it if you are a good Music Freak and `Sure Pick' if an Enrique Iglesias Fan. Love in the Time of Cholera ReviewSo maybe the film adaptation of legenday Colombian author Gabriel Garcia Marquez's "Love In The Time Of Cholera" didn't fully live-up to the source material, but the soundtrack has. Antonio Pinto has scored a beautiful, lush work that brings the world of the film to life with atmospheric sounds and some strong original songs by Shakira. The soundtrack begins with Shakira's contributions, a set of three songs that capture the film's bittersweet love story. Shakira herself is Colombian and gives us a classic bolero "Hay Amores" which has a wonderful, classic feel. The Golden Globe nominated "Despedida" is dramatic and memorable while "Pienso En Ti" has a passive, reflective mood powered by Shakira's strong vocals. The rest of the score by Pinto is a rich set of melodies and pieces that combine the orchestal with authentic music from the Caribbean region where the story takes place. There is a haunting quality to the mix of strings and guitar in a track like "Love." "White Suit" has a cool, breezy feel while "Hildebranda" evokes the kind of indigenous, almost Afro-Caribbean sounds one finds in the coasts of South America. Antonio Pinto has composed a score of heartbreak and tears, wanting and despair, all nicely evoked in tracks like "Escolastica" and "Florentino" where the orchestra swells with great gusto. "Sex Drum" has a great tribal feel while "Los Dos" is a fun, ethnic song that again evokes the Caribbean with wonderful atmosphere. "Love In The Time Of Cholera" has that rare quality in a film score in that it stands apart from the film and in fact, elevated many of the film's weaker scenes or performances. A potent mix of film score and world music, this one is for the romantics and for the ones with sharp ears.Love in the Time of Cholera Overview

Live in Japan (W/Dvd) ReviewI've played guitar, followed acoustic and electric guitar for years in classical, alternative, classic rock and folk genres. These two musicians are in a class of their own, and this recording is probably the best example of their capabilities.
Whether they perform their own work or full or partial covers, Rodrigo is a superb lead with a hit, fluid style I've not experienced since early Carlos Santana. Gabriella uses her guitar as a dual percussion instrument in which the strings release the downbeat and the musician's fingers on the surface of the instrument release every other facet of rhythm.
This is not ambient or mood music. It commands your attention, but once you do you will not be able to still your body -- so driving and rhythmic is their style.
Produced in Japan, this release includes a 27-minute DVD showcasing five of the duo's best pieces and it is mesmerizing to watch (in comparison to most accompanying DVDs out there).
These two are a real "find," and will appeal to anyone who loves acoustic Flamenco, Fado, contemporary Mexica music or anything in between. And if yu love the guitar, don't even bother to wait. This is a deal and a delight, ad also my choice for one of the best of 2008.Live in Japan (W/Dvd) Overview
